BIO: Eva McCARTY reports: I remember grandpa real well. He had a long white beard and long white hair. He used to live with us.  I remember he used to sit on the front porch in his rocking chair and whistle the same tune all day long.  One time he walked off when he was in his nineties. We looked all night and most of the next day before we found him. He had thrown his walking cane down and walked several miles from our house. We found his hat which led us in the right direction. When Dad and my brother-in-law found him, Dad said, "Where were you going, Pap?"  He said, "I was going to Perry's". He was going in the wrong direction!

BIO: America appears in her father's household on the 1870 census for Union County, TN. Her age is given as "7"; per Eva McCARTY's research, America should have been ten years of age at the time of this enumeration (Aug. 1870).

BIO: Per Mrs. McCARTY, Brad WELLS was of the Baptist faith. He served as a Deacon in churches in Union County, TN, Oliver Springs (Morgan Co.), TN and at Hillvale Baptist Church in Clinton, TN, where he was finally laid to rest. Brad died of cancer. A note added to a family group sheet sent by compiler to Mrs. McCARTY for approval reads, "(Married) Mt. Olive Baptist Church." During compiler's visit with Eva McCARTY, June, 1997, Mrs. McCARTY spoke of her special closeness to her father.  "You sound like me," she said, " I was always 'a Daddy's girl.' I thought I could not stand it when my father died..." Mrs. McCARTY reported that her parents were very strict, their home very religion-centered. She was not allowed to date nor even to go in mixed groups of young people until her late teen years.  She laughed as she told a story of finding a "pretty dark bottle" on the side of the road while walking near the family home one day.  Eva thought the bottle, after a good washing up, would be a lovely vase for flowers.   She proudly showed her "treasure" to her father when she walked into the house, but was caught off guard when he "hit the ceiling", demanding to know how Eva came to ownership of such a symbol of the sin of alcohol!
