From Franklin Co., IL, divorce records: "Mary Elizabeth SWOFFORD HALL HINDMAN vs. Hilliard HINDMAN, October 1882: Your oratrix, Mary Elizabeth HINDMAN, a resident of the County of Franklin and State of Illinois, would respectfully represent unto your honor that she has been a resident of Illinois for more than one year and is now a resident of Franklin County. That on 1 May 1878 she was lawfully married to one Hilliard HINDMAN at Franklin County, IL. That during all the time aforesaid your petitioner conducted herself as a kind, loving and affectionate wife. That they continued to live together until 30 January 1882 when she separated from him and has remained away since. That beginning three weeks after their marriage he began treating her in a cruel and inhuman manner by choking and beating her and has been guilty of such extreme and repeated cruelty that she cannot any longer with personal safety to herself remain with the said HINDMAN may it please your honor to order that the bonds of matrimony now existing between your oratrix such other relief in the premises as your Honor may seem meet."
