General Notes (Husband)
Isaac (Hebrew, "laughter"), Old Testament patriarc h , t h e s on of Abraham, half brother of Ishmael, and fat he r o f J aco b and Esau. The birth of Isaac was promise d (se e Ge nesi s 17 :19, 21) to Abraham and his wife Sarah , afte r a l ong a nd ch ildless marriage, as a sign that t he bles sing s origin ally b estowed by God upon Abraham wo uld be c ontin ued in Is aac, he ir of the Covenant. The ev ents of I saac' s life ar e recounte d in Genesis 21-28. Th e dominan t stor y in the na rrative, an d one of the mos t widely kno wn stor ies in the B ible, is tha t of the pro jected sacrif ice of I saac (see Gen esis 22). Acc ording t o this account , God tes ted Abraham' s faith by askin g hi m to sacrific e his belove d son. At th e last moment, af t er God was con vinced of th e perfect obed ience of bot h fathe r and son , he accepte d a ram as a subst itute fo r the youth . Thi s story is thou ght to express th e Hebre w rejection o f hu man sacrifice, p racticed by surrou ndin g nations. The r a m is recalled toda y in synagogue ritu a l at the solemn b lowi ng of the shofar , or ram's horn, du r ing the Jewish H igh Hol y Days, Rosh H ashanah and Yom K ippu r. The New Tes tament all udes to Isaa c as a precurso r of Ch rist and o f the church (s ee Galatia ns 3:16, 4:21 -31), an d the obed ience to his fathe r to th e extent o f self-sacrif ice is a ssociated with that o f Chr ist (se e Hebrews 11:17-1 9). Th ese themes were develope d b y sev eral of the patristi c wr iters, and Isaac appears of t e n in Christian art, parti cu larly in association wit h t h e Eucharist. Archaeologis t s and biblical scholars h ave d raw n parallels between th e b iblical narrative of I saac an d th e history of the Sem iti c tribes. Abraham i s thought t o repr esent the nomadi c stoc k out of which t he Hebrew an d Edomit e tribes separ ated. Isaac w a s a relatively minor figu re compare d to th e other tw o grea t biblical patriarchs, A braham, h is father , and J acob, hi s son; but a number of t he detai ls of the bi bli cal accoun t are believed by schola rs to h ave major symb o lic importan ce. The story of his bi rth i s believed t o b e a deliberat e attempt by early Hebre w wr iters to al ter th e tradition s of the Semitic tribes i n o rder to st rengthen a dherence t o the Hebrew confederac y , a militar y and politica l allianc e, by suggesting tha t i t had div ine inspiration.
