General Notes (Husband)



    The name Tilghman is derived from the occupation o f i t s f i rst bearers, either as "tileman,"one who covere d ro of s wi t h tiles, or as "tillman", a husbandman or fa rmer . Th e fam il y motto of "Spes Alit Agricolam"(Hope su stain s th e farme r) , would indicate the later origin. I t is be lieve d that t h e family originated in Southern Fr ance fro m when ce they s et tled in the Reinland (territor y along t he Rive r Rhine) , a s the Von Till family.This n ame late r appeare d in Germa ny a s Tillman. When the firs t of th e Tilghman f amily appea red i n England it was Til man. Abo ut the year 1 000 it becam e Tilg hman.  In the ab sence o f factual inform ation on th e famil y prior to 122 5 A.D. , it may be assume d that the fa mily cam e to Ken t County , England, with the J utes, one of t he thre e gre at Teuton ic Nations, in their i nvasion of Engl and in 4 4 9. As earl y as 690 (Volume 1, Bea de's Opera Histo rical) , t he Tilgh man family was establish ed in Kent County , f or it i s rec orded that "Tilman was th e name of one o f t he Englis h pr iests who accompanied th e ill-fated Hew alds i n their mi s sion to the Continental S axons, " an d was a "ma n of grea t r enown and also noble, a s the wor ld judgeth, wh o fro m a than e (thegn) was becom e a monk. "  The dictionar y st ates that i n Anglo-Saxon Eng land th e word then denot e d  a warrior comp anion of a King , ass igned a particula r mi litary duty. A lat er meaning o f th e word is a "freem an wh o possessed five o r more hide s o f land and had a sp ecial a ppointment in the K ing's Hal l , and was bound to r ender ser vices in war as a la ndowne r ." Thus it was foun d that "Til man, the Thegnman, " w a s i n Kent County as ea rly as 690.  T he records indicat e th a t Johannes or Joh n Tilghman lived i n Snodland Parr ish, Ke n t County, Engla nd.
