Peter Totten was a weaver by profession and listed as a freehold er in 1683. He married Priscilla between 1683-5. In 1685 he tran sferred 25 acres that he had received from his grandfather Champ ion to his father.
From NYC Wills 1706-1790 (ancestry.com) In the name of God, Amen. April 10, 1766. I, PETER TOTTEN, of Ry e, in King street, in Westchester County, farmer, being in good health. I do first and foremost order all my just debts to be pa id, and funeral charges, and charges of settling my estate, to b e paid by my executors. All the rest of my personal estate I lea ve to my son Daniel and my daughters, Jean Dusenbury, Phebe, wif e of Richard Barnes, Mary, wife of John Pell, Jr., and to all th e children of my deceased daughter, Martha, wife of Caleb Huiste d. My executors are to sell all my personal estate at publick ve ndue, and pay debts and legacies. After my wife's decease, my ex ecutors are to sell all my real estate, and to pay to my eldest son, Peter Totten, 5 shillings. To the children of my deceased s on, Gilbert Totten, œ300, and œ60 which my son Gilbert paid for the use of my son Daniel. I leave to my son Joseph, œ200. To my son Daniel, œ140. The rest to all my children, then living, and the children of those who are dead. "And whereas before the date of this will I have given two deeds of gift to my sons, Gilbert and Joseph, for all my lands which I possessed at the time, whi ch I should not have done, of my own free will, but was over per suaded to give the said deeds, which ever since has much trouble d my mind, by reason it did not do equal justice between my chil dren. And I do hereby, as much as in me lies, disallow and revok e the said two deeds of gift, and I desire that no Court of Law or equity shall allow them." I leave to my grandson, James Lowey, my gun and all my wearing apparell; T o my granddaughter, Sarah Lowey, my Large black framed Looking g lass and mahogany tea table. I leave to my wife Jane the rest of my household furniture, and the use of 1/2 of that part of my r eal estate lying on the north side of Cherry street during her l ife, and the other half to my son Michael during his life, and a fter their death, I leave the same to my grandson, James Lowey. I leave to my son Michael during his life all my lot and buildin gs on the south side of Cherry street, in Montgomerie Ward, boun ded north by Cherry street, west by the lot of Laurence Kortrigh t, east by John Alner, south by the river. After his death, I le ave 1/2 to my grandson, James Lowey, but not to sell till he is 24 years old. The other half I leave to all the daughters of my son Michael. If my son Michael should have two sons, they are to have 2/3. I leave to my daughter Hannah my best bed and furniture, "the new est that I have," and a cupboard, chest and table, and 1/2 of ho usehold goods, and 1/2 of the flax and grain, and 1/2 of the pro visions. I leave to my daughter, Keziah Combes and Mary Lester, the rest of my movables. My executors are to sell all my lands a nd tenements, and pay debts. I leave to my daughter Hannah œ140, "in lieu of œ60 which I sold her negro girl for." I leave to my grandson, Benajah Bedell, œ16. Of the remainder I leave 1/2 to my son Jeremiah and 1/2 to my son, Timothy Bedell. But out of th e part of Timothy is to be deducted the sum that my son Jeremiah paid to John Leffert Hagawout on his account. At her deat h or second marriage, which may first happen, all my real estate to her son, my son-in-law, Joseph Totten, upon conditions of hi s part of his father's estate which came in my hands by his moth er, my wife, Mary Suydam; which considerably overruns his portio n that came in my hands by his mother, my wife. All which I have herein given to my wife I give to her in lieu of her dower. To my loving brother, John Suydam, the sum of œ1,000. I do order th at my negro woman named Lyddea shall, if she choose, work for he rself, and if she can support herself without any expense to my estate, and maintain the child she is now pregnant with; if it s hould live, my will is and do give the said negro child its Free dom.
