General Notes for Child James Whitworth Towell
J. W. TOWELL PASSES ON
Seldom in the history of Columbus have so many of the rea lly beloved older residents ceased their earthly labors i n the same season of the year as we have been called upon t o record during the last few months. First one and then ano ther of those who have grown grey in their labors for the d evelopment of the county, ---men and women who through gene rous hearts, clean and kindly life and noble endeavor hav e acquired an affectionate place in the hearts of the publi c and whose death has caused overwhelning sorrow and regret. This time it is smiling Jim Towell, that noble, stalwart, g enerous soul---the man who throughout fifty-three years o f residence in this county never had an enemy so far as th e public knew. Mr. Towell died at eight thirty Saturday mor ning, after about three weeks serious illness. He was burie d at the Odd Fellows Rest shortly after three o'clock Sunda y afternoon, in the presence of an immense concourse of fri ends whose hearts are full of sorrow. Funeral services wer e conducted at the family residence at three o'clock by Rev . R. S. Farrard, pastor of the First Baptist Church, who pa id a glowing tribute to the memory of Mr. Towell. Service s at the graveside consisted of a simple and affectionate p rayer offered by Brother Garrard.
Mr. Towell, whose full name was James Whitworth Towell , was born in Surmner County, Tennessee February 13, 1847 , being nearly seventy three years old at the time of his d eath. He joined Company I of the Seventh Tennessee Cavalry , his father's troop under the command of Gen. Forrest, whe n Mr. Towell was only seventeen years of age; and rendere d splendid service to the Confederacy. He was among those w ho surrendered at Sehna, Alabama, April 16, 1865.
Mr. Towell, with his younger brother, Ike, came to Texa s in the early part of 1866, and sent for his father and th e rest of the family in the fall of the same year. They liv ed in Colorado County about six miles from Columbus until 1 872 when J. W. Towell moved to Harris County, twenty five m iles north of Houston where he assisted in the operation of a tram railroad fo r a saw mill. After three years at that place he returned t o Colorado County. On December 16, 1879 he married Miss Lau ra Shaw, a sweet and noble woman who survives him and whos e companionship has been the constant inspiration from th e day of his marriage to the day of his death--a companionship unsurpass ed for its unity and happiness.
From 1879 until 1892 they lived on a farm about ten mile s north of Columbus. In 1891 the cotton gin Mr. Towell wa s operating was burned, and thereafter he decided to move t o Columbus, since which time he has been part and parcel o f this community, engaging anb assisting in various enterpr ises and taking an active and foremost part in every forward and progressive m ovement. His first partnership in Columbus was with Mr. Car ey Shaw with whom he was interested in many business enterp rises throughout the remainder of his life. And be it sai d in his memory that in every enterprise he ever undertook , in every work he ever engaged, in everything he ever di d he had the confidence and esteem of the public; and neve r failed to fully justify that confidence and esteem.
Mr. Towell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Towell, hi s children, Mrs. H. W. Carothers of Houston, Carey of San A ntonio, and Roy, Will, and Miss Ina Mae of Columbus. He i s also survived by his brother, Ike Towell, of Bay City an d three sisters, Mrs. M. V. Harrison of Houston, Mts. Betti e Walker of Columbus and Mrs. E. L. Ory of San Antonio. Man y orphans, nephews and nieces found a true father in him an d lived in his home until maturity; for he was a man who al ways gave the full measure of his love to his own flesh an d blood, and never under any circumstances failed to do hi s full duty by them.
Among those present at the funeral from out of town were : Carey Towell of San Antonio; Mesdames M. V. Harrison an d T. J. Windham, of Houston; Carey Shaw, Whit Boyd and W. T . Boyd, all of Houston; Ike Towell of Bay City; Mr. and Mrs . Walter Hinson of Richmond; Miss Lyda Boyd of Washington D .C.; Mesdames Thomas Peterson and Sybil Sandmeyer of Hallet sville; Dr. Whit Harrison, H. W. Carothers, Durell Carother s and Miss Mabel Brooks, all of Houston.
The pall bearers at the funeral were: Messrs. Geo. Gegenw orth, S. K. Seymour, Ellis Miller, John Hester, Will Wirt z and Lang Youens.
The honorary pall bearers, all Confederate veterans, wer e: Messrs. Duncan, Felix Mahon, N. Mahon, Dr. Byars, Lowrey , Lessing, McCane, Herman Brune.
This memorial would be incomplete if the Citizen failed t o say that no man ever left a better impression on those wh o knew him than Mr. Towell. If "by their fruits ye shall kn ow them" then he was "an Isrealite indeed in whom them wa s no guile. " Harbworking, energetic and conscientious to t he innermost recesses of his heart; kind gentle, generous, frank, faithful and si ncere, Jim Towell was a real man among men, and his passin g away has left a multitude of aching hearts.
