General Notes (Husband)

My Uncle Windham was trained to be a merchant & did not re ceive a classical education, yet became one of the best-rea d men I ever knew in English & especially in historic liter ature. He became a planter & was for years President of th e Bank of Georgetown, enjoying the entire confidence of al l his acquaintance for his unimpeachable integrity & belove d by every one for his kindness of heart & habitual cheerfu lness. Bishop Dehon was so much struck with his unaffecte d piety that he urged him to study for the ministry, but m y modest uncle, with the advice of other friends, decline d on the plea of ignorance of the classics. He continued h owever, always a zealous Christian & churchman, of genial b enevolence. An affectionate relative, I shall never forge t his brotherly kindness to my Mother, especially in her wi dowhood when he became Executor of my father's Estate, & gu ardian of his children, in which capacities he was unwearie d in attention to the best interests of all of us. In thos e days of reverence for long established usage, before th e objectionable practice of marrying either Sisters-in-la w or brothers-in-law, had been introduced, he was to my Mot her as an own brother, & used to kiss her in genuine simpli city of fraternal affection. He took great pleasure in see ing young people happy, & used to invite his nephews to hi s bachelor home at Laurelland, where he spent the latter ye ars of his life, after the death of "Grandmamma Martin," wi th whom he had lived for years previously, & to whom he ha d been as a son. Some of the happiest of my holidays wer e spent under his roof, & many are the reminiscences of juv enile sports with gun, & boat, & horse in company with my b rother & cousins during the years of my boyhood, & how joyf ully we welcomed the one-horse-vehicle in which, with Scipi o, as an outrider on horseback Richard and I used to set ou t for the two days' ride from Charleston over the sandy roa d at the leisurely rate of 3 or 4 miles an hour, taking tw o days to make the journey of 60 miles, & with what longin g after a cold ride at Christmas we looked out at the clos e of the day for the bright light from the "32 Mile House", " where we were to spend the intermediate night, but most o f all how high our hearts rose in anticipation as we drew n ear to the desired end of our journey, & were greeted by th e benevolent smile of the good old gentleman as he met us a t his back door, or was overtaken by us on his way home fro m "the Bank" during which rides he was usually so deeply ab sorbed in some book that on a day long memorable in our ann als, his sleepy coachman let his blind horse actually carr y him when in the saddle into a deep ditch over which ther e was a bridge where it crossed the road, & thus startled m y uncle from his absorption though without any other effec t than a surprise at the moment, & a standing jest for a lo ng time afterwards, always taken in good part by the good t empered subject of it. Yet he was naturally choleric, & t o the end of his life would occasionally let out some of th e fire of his youth, especially when called upon "boldly t o rebuke vice," which he did, "beloved disciple" though h e was, with all the "thunder" of a "Boanerges," or when obl iged to expose falsehood intentional, or any attempt to imp ose upon him in matters of fact, as once when in the stag e coach from Charleston, the conversation turning on religi ous persecution, a Romanist in company ventured on the asse rtion that his Church had never persecuted, but that the pe nalties of the Inquisition had been always by the order o f only the civil authority, an audacity of historic contrad iction that brought my uncle down upon him in an overwhelmi ng array of instances cited with an indignation which soo n silenced the adventurous advocate, who had presumed on Pr otestant ignorance. His abhorrence of all impurity shewe d itself strikingly in his habit of tearing out of books i n his possession, however costly the edition, whatever leav es had in them though but a word of questionable propriety , as in Byron's works, of which a beautiful copy was thus r ighteously mutilated by his indignant reprobation. Dear ol d Uncle, he met with an accident by a fall from a mule, whi ch made him a cripple for years before his death, for as h e was riding once on North Island beach where he & his brot her & sister had long been in the habit of spending his sum mers his hip-joint was dislocated & after months of sufferi ng he was reduced to the use of a crutch, an affliction bor ne with exemplary cheerfulness though very trying to one o f his active habits. He was too indulgent a master to b e a good manager, and too liberal to lay up money, so tha t at his death, after paying his debts, there was but littl e left to be divided among his heirs, & a forced sale by or der of the Bank having been made of his negroes there wer e separations which it would have pained his kind heart t o forsee, and scenes were witnessed then which, young a s I was, forced me to admit that there were evils in slaver y that called for legislative remedy.
