He graduated from Yale College in 1860, taught mathematic s f o r 12 years at schools in Pennsylvania, New York, and Wisconsin. He t h e n opened drug stores at Buffalo, New York, and New Port, Pennsylvania, befor e m o ving to Cortland, New York, where he practiced small scale gardening.
