Last residence: OR 97223 Individual: Cora Belle Hayes was known all her life as "Ted", a nickname given her by her brother, Bill , who never called anyone by her given name. As the second oldest child of 12, and the oldes t girl, Ted always had to be a "mother's helper" and tend the younger ones and help out wit h the cooking and housework. She was only allowed to go to school through 6th grade, as she was nee ded at home. However, she loved to read, and educated herself to the best of her ability, an d had a lovely handwriting. She was quite artistic, and could draw wonderful farm animals, es pecially horses, which she loved. She had a chance to go to art school when in her teens, spo nsored by a neighbor who saw her talent, but she was not allowed to go because of responsibil ities at home. They moved around a lot, and during her life with her family they moved approx imately 60 times, and after she was married in 1922, the family was still moving several time s a year.
In 1914, when her father decided to move the family from Brownsville, Oregon to Meridian, Id aho, they took two teams and wagons. Ted was 18, and she drove one wagon, while her father dr ove the other. She kept a diary of their journey, writing a little each night when they camped. She always remembered her heartbreak when they had to lighten the wagon and she had t o leave her box of books behind. They only stayed in Idaho a short time, then sold everythin g and took the train back to Halsey, Oregon.
She was married to George Beach in 1922 and they lived in a small house they bought in St. J ohns, Oregon, which later was incorporated into Portland. Their daughter, Helen, was born i n that house, and their daughter, Shirley, was born in a small, "lying in" maternity home nea rby. They lived at this same address until 1958, when they moved to an acreage near Beaverton , Oregon. Ted loved living in the country, and they had chickens and rabbits, and a large gar den. Ted joined the local "Ladies Aid" and enjoyed going to the meetings and hosting them i n her home. She held the office of Treasurer at one time. She and George also belonged to th e Kinton Grange, and enjoyed helping with the annual turkey dinner that was put on by the gra nge. She usually volunteered to roast a couple of turkeys or bake some pumpkin pies. All o f her nieces and nephews loved "Aunt Ted", and felt that she was a special person.
When George died in 1974 as a result of an auto accident, it was a terrible loss to Ted. Sh e managed to stay in their home in the country for a few years, but then when she fell and br oke her hip she realized she couldn't stay out there alone any more and moved into a lovely r etirement apartment in the Tigard/King City area, where she could have her meals in the dinin g room and enjoy housekeeping service. In her later years she had severe osteoporosis and wa s in quite a lot of pain and was quite stooped. She was 91 years old when she died.
