He was a machinist and established a factory to manufact u r e his father's horse hay rake. He later invented and manufactured a line of s c r oll-sawing machinery and other wood working tools, winning a varie t y o f prizes at trades shows and fairs. In 1890 he began serving as preside n t o f the First National Bank of Montrose, Pennsylvania. An account of his lif e a n d family is given in J. H. Beers & Co., "Biographical Record of Northeastern P e n nsylvania", 1900, at pp. 188-190.
