BIO: Per Mrs. McCARTY, Nancy's father would not allow her to marry the father of the first daughter. Nancy, thinking to spite her father, had two more daughters by the man, but never told the girls who he was.

BIO: Elisha married Martha shortly after Eliza, his first wife, died. Martha, at the time was working for his brother, David. Martha never knew who her father was. She was illegitimate. Martha's mother, Nancy, who lived with Elisha and Martha, was known by the family as "Granny." Eva McCARTY writes that her mother remembered "Granny" telling how her father would not allow her to marry Martha's father. She would not tell who he was and thinking to spite her father, she had two more children by him. As far as anyone knows she never told her children who their father was. In 1897, Martha and Elisha traveled by train to Dewey County, OK, with Elisha's daughter, Lavisa and son-in-law, Jesse Jackson ELDER. The ELDERs' daughters, Mossie Lee and Harriett Manerva, and their children were with them. Izora, the baby, cried all the first night. Arriving at Weatherford, OK, they then took a wagon on to Dewey County, where they settled on land 3 miles east of and two or three miles north of Putman. There, according to Mrs. McCARTY'S grandmother, the hard times began and then stayed with them until Martha died. The dugout where the family made their home leaked when it rained and snakes creeped into the house. Elisha farmed and raised a few cattle, but he was a carpenter by trade, and farming was not his forte'. Later, Elisha helped to build several homes in the area, but he never was able to construct one for his own family. Martha never liked OKLAHOMA, and had a fear of having to die inside the dugout. One day when she was doing the washing, she called for her son, James Lewis to throw out a big tub of water for her. When "Jim" did not immediately come to do as his mother asked, Martha emptied the water herself. In the process of lifting the heavy tub, she injured herself internally, causing internal bleeding. Apparently the bleeding continued for several weeks untreated, and was ultimately the cause of her death. In her last hours, Martha insisted that she be removed from the dugout, so her son, David Richard, helped to carry her outside. She was placed under the shade of a tree where she lay until she died. David Richard reported that to be the longest, saddest day of his life. After Martha's death, the family would take her baby, Izora, to the cotton fields while they picked cotton. Placing the baby on some cotton sacks, they would pull her along with them as they worked their way down the rows of cotton, and Izora would cry for her mother. As soon as the family earned enough money to pay their passage back to TN, they separated -- some staying in OK, others returning to TN as Martha had wanted so badly to do. Elisha returned to TN, but in later years, he went back to OK and stayed for a while, first with one child, then with another until his death.
