 He obtained a B.A. from the University of Michigan an d l a w degree from Miami University.  He was a captain of the infantry, U.S. Arm y d u ring World War II. He fought at Bataan and survived the infamous "Death Mar c h " only to be wounded  and killed while being evacuated from the Philippine s t o J apan in January, 1945.
