There is no doubt that Ninian Beall, 1625-1717, wa s a d e vout Presbyterian. He loved the religion of his fa thers.
We can realize how much he was affected when he lear n e d that the Rev. Matthew Hill arrived in 1669, locate d i n Ch arles County, built a church, collected a flourish in g congr egation and the Presbyterians of Calvert Count y ha d neithe r a minister or a church.
When that splendid Christian character, Francis Makem i e , arrived in 1680, located near Pocomake City, Easter n Sh or e, organized a congregation, and by 1683 had buil t a bi g l og church, Ninian was deeply stirred! "What i s the ma tte r with the Presbyterians of Calvert County tha t we cann ot h ave either church or minister? Wake up!" Som ething qui ckl y happened. A messenger was quickly dispatc hed to Scot lan d to capture a minister of the Gospel and h is congregat io n and bring them to the Province of Marylan d. Within tw ent y months, in 1685, the Rev. Nathaniel Tay lor and his co ngre gation arrived in Calvert County. Th e congregation, c onsis ting of about 25 families, were pro vided with plantat ions o n the Potomac River in now Princ e Georges County, an d the s ettlement was called New Scotl and.
Ninian Beall deeded a lot in Upper Marlboro, a churc h w a s built, a silver communion service was sent for by C olon e l Ninian Beall and the Rev. Nathaniel Taylor was fu lly e qu ipped to carry out Ninian's desire, expressed in t he dee d f or the lot, to wit: "For ye propagation of ye Go spel o f Jes us Christ."
Rev. NathanielTaylor, Edward Willet, and Tabitha Wil l e t seem to be the persons whose names have been record e d a s such as composing part of the New Scotland settleme nt.
The Maryland Land Office has no record of the arriv a l o f those New Scotland immigrants. For cogent reasons t he y di d not claim the 50 acres of land authorized for eac h i mmigr ant, and therefore were not recorded in that offi ce.
About this time Ninian Beall increased his land hold i n g 1,943 acres. So we can surmise that these immigrant s w er e properly cared for.
There really had arrived and recorded in the Land Off i c e at Annapolis, and otherwise disposed of two wome n Im mi grants, named Sarah Bell and Mary Bell, noted as f ollow s:

It is estimated that a Sarah Bell and a Mary Bell app e a red about this time in now Prince Georges County and th a t t hey came with these above mentioned 25 Immigrant fam il ie s that came with the Rev. NathanieI Tavlor.
They must have been very attractive Scottish lassies , f o r Samuel Magruder, 1661-1711, married Sarah Bell in 1 686 ; a nd John Pottinger, 1662-1735, married Mary Bell abo ut t he s ame time.
Colonel Samuel Magruder, in his will of 1711, mentio n s " My Brother John Pottinger." This confirms the relati on shi p between Sarah and Mary Bell, as sisters.
Sarah Bell Magruder named two of her children, Mar y a n d John, as a compliment to her sister, Mary, and he r husb an d, John Pottinger. Mary Bell Pottinger named tw o of he r ch ildren, Sarah and Samuel, as a compliment to h er siste r, Sa rah, and her husband, Samuel Magruder.
The apparent fondness of Sarah Bell Magruder for Colo n e l Ninian Beall and his family indicates either a relati on sh ip or strong friendship. She named her second son fo r C olo nel Ninian; and in her will of 1734 she makes valua bl e pres ents to Mary and Samuel Beall, children of Ninia n [2 ] Beall , 1672-1710.
