Thurman Ivan Beam, 79, who lived near Arlington, (that is in West Virginia) died unexpectedl y at his home at 6:15 Monday morning (that is Feb. 20, 1967).
He was born Nov. 22, 1887, in Clay County, a son of the late George and Margaret Beam. He wa s a retired lumberman, and held membership in the Rock Cave Masonic Lodge, and held the Scott ish Rite. He was a veteran of World War 1.
Mr. Beam is survived by his wife, Mrs. Delcie Woodford Beam; three sons, George Beam, Birc h River; John Beam , Freemont, California, and James Beam of Bellville, Kansas; a daughter , Mrs. Mildred Updike (or Opedyke) of Dundee, N. Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Mae McCauley, of Ella more, and Mrs. Mollie Wright, of Chestnut Ridge, PA., and a brother, Sherman Beam of Copen , 11 grandchildren, and 2 Great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Tomblyn Brothers Funeral Home at French Creek until noon Thur sday. The body will lie in state at the Arlington Baptist Church from 1 until 1 o'clock whe n the Rev. Lloyd Tenney and the Rev. W. W. Browning will conduct final rites. Burial will b e made in the Arlington Cemetery with the Buckhannon Post of the American Legion, of which Mr . Beam was a member, officiating.

Two things wrong in that obit. Dad was born in Webster county. I think the Updyke lad that w as Mildred's son was also named Hal. I met him once when he was an Ensign in the navy abou t 1966/67. He was married to his childhood sweetheart , a darling girl that contracterd MS a t age 23. The last I knew of them she was in remission. Think her mane was Diana , Debby or s omething like that.

Over coffee this morning, Janice corrected my thinking a bit. Mildred's husband name was "Ham ". That could have been short for Hamilton or some other name. Maybe Doris and George know . Hal was the boy's name and Suzie was the girls name. ( it's nice to have a wife when you ne ed information) I also see I misspelled the Opdyke name in my last message. ( must have bee n thinking of John Updyke, an author of several novels twenty plus years ago)
I didn't read the too carefully the two Updike names you sent. Mildred died in the late 70' s as Jan had gone to Miami to see her sister, who was also terminal with colon cancer. Thou gh, I think Mildred had ovarian cancer. She also went to see Mildred and Ham as they were sno wbirds and always went to Fla. in the winter months.

Mr. Beam was born June 10, 1922, at Buckhannon, W.Va., and lived in Goodland for 30 years. H e traveled throughout Kansas working commercial construction and was a World War II and Korea n War Air Force veteran. His wife, Jane, died in 1998. Survivors include a daughter, Jan Kemmerer of Jewell; a stepdaughter, Kathy Every of Wichita ; two brothers, George of Buckhannon and John of Fallon, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; four step-gr andchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
