General Notes (Wife)
MRS. SHUBRICK,wife of Richard Shubrick, defended [p.63] a n American soldier who had sought refuge with her, by placi ng herself before the chamber in which he was secreted, an d resolutely telling the British officer, "To men of honor , the chamber of a lady should be as sacred as the sanctuar y. I will defend the passage to it, though I perish. You ma y succeed and enter it, but it shall be over my corpse." Th e officer ceased further search. On another occasion, she r eproved a British sergeant for striking a servant of thei r family, inflicting a severe sabre-wound on his shoulders , because he could not disclose the place where the plate w as hidden, and told him to strike her, if any one; for, til l she died, no further injury should be done to the aged ov erseer. The sergeant, discomfited, retired.
