BIO: David Bruce mow, compiler's great grandfather, died eight years before compiler was born. Reports of members of the GILCHRIST family have drawn a vivid picture in compiler's mind of a gentle, highly respected family man,who was ever-present in the family circle and cherished by his grandsons, as well as his children. David MOW was the third of eight children of Adam H. and Harriet "Jane" WALKER MOW. He lived most of his life in the community of Whippoorwill near Rochester, IN. In 1879, David married Catherine BEEHLER, the daughter of first-generation immigrants from GERMANY. The MOWs had seven children in their 52-year marriage. They were humble people, yet they reared their children with great dignity and self-respect. David was a carpenter and a farmer, who also spent some time working on road-building crews in northern INDIANA. While never a large land owner, he did maintain a small farm most of his married life. In 1913, David bought a 19 acre tract from his older brother, James Samuel, who had migrated to OREGON. This property was located in Township 31 north, Range 2-E, in Section 22--in Richland Township, north of the Tippecanoe River, about two miles east of South Germany Cemetery and five miles east of the Leiters Ford community. In Fulton County Deed Book 79, compiler found a release and quit-claim from David and Catherine's living children and surviving children of their deceased daughter, to Catherine for the remaining estate of David MOW. This estate included a strip of land in the same location at that deeded to David from James Samuel, as well as "all personal property, of any kind or character ...including particularly the Ford Coupe owned by David MOW...1922 Model T.."
Obituary From the "Rochester Sentinel" DAVID MOWE SUCCUMBS AFTER LENGTHY ILLNESS David Mowe, 75, well known resident of the Whippoorwill community died at 6:30 Wednesday morning. Death was due to complications of diseases and followed a two months illness. Mr. Mowe, who had spent practically all of his life in the Whippoorwill neighborhood, followed the occupations of a farmer and carpenter. He was a member of the Grand View Church. Surviving are his wife, whose maiden name was Katherine Beehler; two daughters, Mrs. Maime Stickler, near Whippoorwill, Mrs. Gladys Riggs of South Bend; three sons, Floyd, Omer and Carlton, all of South Bend; two brothers, Marion of Whippoorwill and Samuel, of Oregon. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
The obituary has been copied exactly as it appeared in the newspaper The "Record of Death" gives the cause of death as "Carcinomia of Doudimunary" It was signed by L. MEEK, M.D., a family doctor often mentioned by the descendents of David MOW. Wilma FOLTZ sent compiler copies of three pages of handwritten data concerning the MOW family. They appear to be part of a ledger or notebook but the source is unknown. The handwriting appears to be a feeble feminine hand. It is possible that it may have been written by Catherine BEEHLER MOW, who survived until 1948. On the first of three pages, the third entry reads: "David Bruce Mow departed from this woorld october the 14. 1931"

BIO: Compiler has a few very dim recollections of this great-grandmother, Catherine BUEHLER/BEEHLER MOW. Catherine was confined to her bed for several years following a massive stroke. She spent the last years of her life in the home of her youngest daughter, Gladys MOW RIGGS, in South Bend. As a child, compiler vaguely remembers visiting "Grandma MOW" at "Aunt Gladys'" home, but that memory is limited to a child's mental picture of a very small frail old lady in a hospital bed. There is no feeling of ever really knowing the person, Catherine MOW. On one of the visits, Catherine did recognize her grandson, Virgil, and attempted to speak to him, but could not form the words. Then tears of frustration flowed from her aged eyes; she could only cling to the hand Virgil offered to her. At the time of the next visit, she did not appear to recognize him at all. Little is known of the BEEHLER family before Catherine's marriage to David MOW. Catherine's parents consistently reported on census records that they were both born in BAVARIA. Compiler has not discovered when or where they arrived in AMERICA, but apparently all their children were born "in the New World." The reason for their being in Sandusky County, OH at the time of Catherine's birth is not known. Discovery of data submitted to GenServ by William HASSENPLUG, revealed that at least some of the older children born to George and Anna Mary BUEHLER were born in Seneca County, OH, rather than Sandusky County. Catherine's obituary, however, specifically states her place of birth as "Sandusky." Whether Catherine's father and grandfather were involved in construction of one of the canals routed from Lake Erie is not known. This could have been the attraction to Seneca and Sandusky County areas, but this is mere speculation on the part of this compiler. From the birth ages of the BEEHLER children and the places of birth reported on the 1870 census, it appears that the BEEHLER's were in OHIO from about 1851 to about 1860. Their oldest son, George, Jr. was born in OHIO about 1851; Catherine was born in OHIO in 1859. Franklin, the child following Catherine, was born in INDIANA about 1861. The HASSENPLUG data, however, also revealed the existence of a daughter born to the couple before George, Jr. Her date of birth was 10 Dec. 1849, and the place was cited as Seneca County, OH. This would lead to the assumption that Mary and George were married in OHIO--HASSENPLUG states "Huron, OH...14 Jan. 1849." The source of his data is not given. In 1995, Margarett STEININGER responded to a request for family data. For the most part, her letter was concerned with the MOW family, but two paragraphs addressed the BEEHLER history. Parts are quoted below: "...About great Grandpa Beehler,...Mable Hassenplug...she told me that grandpa moved to KANSAS in 1855 but that simply does not make any sense as my grandmother must have been born about 1859..."(Margarett is referring to Catherine BEEHLER) "..and I thought she was born in Indiana... ...I can not reconcile the dates with a story that grandma Mow Beehler used to tell about when they came from Ohio to Indiana in a covered wagon and got lost. She said her younger sister Eliza would tell their father that the wagon train was going in circles, but of course no one believed a child..." Margarett's story goes on that Eliza was right and was able to chart their way out of the confusion by her knowledge of the stars. There must have been some confusion about the incident, because Eliza was born in INDIANA and only three years old on the 1870 census. Still, there could have been some other child about whom the story was handed down. In fact, there were two other BEEHLER families enumerated near to the George "BEELER" household in 1870. In dwelling #105 was a 42-year old Charles BEELER, and in dwelling #108, Frederick BEELER, age 57, was enumerated. George was then 49 and living in dwelling #107. All but one of the senior members of the three homes were born in BAVARIA. There were six young girls between the ages of 11 and 18 in the three homes, so Margarett's story may well have been true, but with a different "leading lady." Compiler's attempts to communicate with William HASSENPLUG after finding his data on the computer network, were unsuccessful; however, compiler suspects that he may have inherited the genealogy work of Mabel HASSENPLUG, of whom both Wilma FOLTZ and Margarett STEININGER wrote. Mr. HASSENPLUG's data includes the father and grandfather of George BEEHLER/BUEHLER, and according to his data, George's father and probably one or more brothers came to AMERICA at about the same time. Wilma MOW FOLTZ has provided copies of articles concerning Catherine's death, both probably from "The Rochester Sentinel". ********************************** MRS. DAVID MOW DIES AT SOUTH BEND, IND. General Notes for Child Millie Artiemicia (Artie) Mow
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Family stories have it that "Artie" was a beautiful, genteel lady who was adored by her husband William GILCHRIST. Pictures of her before her death show her as having snow white hair even at the young age of 40. Her posture and general appearance in these photographs give the impression of a soft-spoken, gentle but dignified "Lady". Artiemicia had seemingly been in poor health for quite a while prior to her death. Sarah Hettie O'DELL, oldest sister of Elizabeth, Virgil's future wife, had been working for the GILCHRIST family, taking care of Artiemicia and keeping house for the men. Artiemicia's oldest son, Virgil, was working in the Chicago area in 1920, so he was not at home when she died. Byron, her youngest child, reported his memories of his mother's death in a conversation with compiler, at his residence in 1995. "I had just taken water, towels and soap in to her bed for her to bathe herself that morning. I went back to take the water away and had just walked away when I heard her say, 'Oh!' I turned around and she was sitting straight up on the bed holding her head between her hands. Then in the next minute, she just fell back on the bed, and she was gone." Byron was about 17 when his mother died; this was obviously an experience that was deeply etched into the young man's memory. In May, 1994, Wilma MOW FOLTZ sent compiler a photocopy of three pages of handwritten data on the MOW family. The pages have no identification of source or ownership. Compiler suspects they may have been written by Catherine BEEHLER MOW, but this is not confirmed. On these sheets, the writer has recorded vital dates for each of the MOW's seven children. The first birth entry reads, "Milie Artiamicia Mow-Born in the state of Indiana Richland township Fulton Coy Ind July the 1 1880 A.D." On the opposite page appears another entry, second on this page, "Milie Artiemicia Mow left this wourld, September the 19 1920." The entry just above this one is the record of the death of David and Catherine's infant daughter, Alice Gertrude MOW. One of the earliest "gems' compiler found among the family keepsakes was the farm accounts ledger of her grandfather, William GILCHRIST. This journal was in the ownership of compiler's brother, Bob, who generously allowed it to be kept with other "family history." On the inside of the back cover of William's ledger in a somewhat faded long-hand appears, "Wm. Gilchrist born march 31, 1869. Millie Artiemishie Mow born July 2, 1880." Under this note, are the birthdates of each of the GILCHRIST's two sons. Then beneath those notes is still another, "Millie Artiemeshe Gilchrist died Sept, 19, 1920." The deep devotion of this man for his wife is almost legendary in family stories. Some have said that he was so devastated by her death that he just walked out of their home without even locking it and went to South Bend to work at carpentry with his sons. Millie Artiemicia MOW GILCHRIST is buried next to her husband in the IOOF Cemetery at Richland Center, Fulton County, IN. Her beauty lives in photographs cherished by her grandchildren and in stories handed down from her sons to their children.

She is survived by the husband, two sons, Virgil and Byron, three brothers, Carlton, Omer and Floyd Mow, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Mow and two sisters, Maine Stickler and Mrs. Gladys Riggs. Funeral service at Whippoorwill church, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 oclock. Burial at Richland Center.

BIO: Compiler remembers "Aunt Maine" as very proud and dignified in appearance. She was considered a "proper lady" and one for whom compiler's father felt a particular fondness. The few times when she was to visit the GILCHRIST home were anticipated with great preparation and excitement. Her oldest daughter, Alice, and compiler's father grew up as very close friends, as well as first cousins. Maine (MOW) STICHLER was to some extent a "substitue mother" to Virgil, and they maintained close contact over many miles and through many years. Compiler's sister, Claudia GILCHRIST DEEN, has a letter written to Virgil by his aunt in October, 1956, which compiler has photocopied: Oct. 31, 1956 Dear Virgil and family- You may be surprised to hear from me after so long- but this line is to tell you I do think of you all and wonder how you are. I didn't feel I could go to Jim's wedding alone, and so I missed seeing you. I am sure every one were happy on the happy ocassion. Where will they be at home? Not to far away I hope. How is your work now? I hope you have work and able to be on the job. There seem to be plenty building going on every where, we are getting another school building at Richland Center- Ernie is back to work again but he had a rugged time after surgery-for varicose veins. I will be glad for a line to know how you & family are.
Love aunt Maine
(Compiler's Note) The wedding she mentions was that of Jim GILCHRIST and Katherine WISHARD. "Ernie" was her son-in-law, husband of Alice WRIGHT ODELL. Nineteen-year-old Maine MOW was the oldest of David and "Kate" MOW's children still living at home at the time of the 1900 census. In July of that year, she married John M. WRIGHT. Their daughter, Alice Pauline, was born in October of 1901. Sometime before January 1906, this marriage ended in a divorce. Little is known about John WRIGHT or the marriage; this was a "closed subject" for discussion in the MOW family. The GILCHRIST's apparently respected this for the only thing compiler was ever told was "Aunt Maine was married to Alice's father, Mr. WRIGHT". Evidently Maine's second marriage was a much happier one, and Theodore STICHLER seemed to be highly respected throughout the family. The STICHLERs "made history" in Fulton County when Maine gave birth to triplets in November, 1915. "The Rochester Sentinel" carried the following story on Nov. 20: For the first time in sixteen years, the birth of triplets was recorded in this county, Friday when Mrs. Theodore Stichler, who lives north of the river, became the mother of two daughters and one son. Two children are living and seem to be in perfect health, while one daughter was still born. The living children weigh five and six pounds, and have been named Theodore, Jr. and Theodora. Mrs. Stichler is thirty-four years old and is the mother of two other children. Dr. Meek of Tiosa, the attending physician says that it was the first time he officiated at the arrival of triplets.
The two surviving members of this birth grew up and married in Fulton County. The daughter, Theodora, died a tragic death by suicide in 1943, accidentally taking the life of her small son at the same time. On June 3, 1969 Maine STICHLER attended the funeral of her youngest sister, Gladys RIGGS, in South Bend. Immediately after the service, Maine suffered a massive stroke and died at 1:35 p.m. on the same day her sister was buried. WIlma FOLTZ has provided a photocopy of the obituary:
STROKE LEADS TO DEATH OF MRS. STICHLER Mrs. Maine Stichler, 87, of the Haven Hubbard Nursing Home, New Carlisle, died at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital, where she had been taken after she collapsed at the Hollis Funeral Home while attending the funeral of her sister, Mrs. Gladys M. Riggs. Death was attributed to a stroke. She was born July 27, 1881, in Fulton County and came to South Bend in 1937 from Battle Creek, Mich. Her husband, Theodore, died in 1922. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ernest O'dell, Mrs. Frank Cauffman and Mrs. Hugh Steininger, all of South Bend; a son, Theodore of Gas City, Ind., nine grandchildren; and two brothers, Omer Mow of South Bend and Carlton Mow of Moses Lake, Wash. Two other daughters preceded her in death. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Lydick United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Seitz, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Richland Center. Friends may call at the Forest G. Hay and Son Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 Thursday. Compiler's most vivid memory of "Uncle Floyd" is of a visit to his farm in the early 1950's. The farm and house were beautifully maintained, simple but very attractive. When compiler and her parents were preparing to leave, Uncle Floyd gave compiler an ear of popcorn grown on his farm. Compiler was astonished that popcorn was grown the same as sweet corn or field corn. In an interview with his nephew, Byron B. GILCHRIST, in June, 1996, Byron said of his uncle, "Uncle Floy came back thinking to farm at the start of WW I. Chrisman landed the job of building the ship yard for Ford. They coaxed him into taking the job as Supt. of the shipyards. He became quite well-known...had many opportunities for jobs all over the world. He returned to Fulton County and retired on the farm."

BIO: There has been considerable confusion in verifying data on this son of Marion MOW. The 1900 census extracted by compiler, lists Clarence L. as the oldest of the MOW sons. His birth month is given as "NOV" and year as "1883"; his age is given as 16 in June 1900. His tombstone shows his birth year as 1883. Wilma MOW FOLTZ, his niece, gives his birth date as 10 NOV 1885. (Census gives 1885 as the birth year of Wilma's father, Clayton). In February, 1992, Rosemary WILLIAMS, at that time an employee of the Fulton Co. Health Dep't in Rochester, IN and a genealogical researcher, sent compiler a list of marriages and deaths she had found in the Marshall County Library Newspaper Excerpt Files. One of these was taken from the "Weekly Republican" from 1921. "9 June 1921 Clarence Mow killed (accident) at Argos". In 1995, Wilma FOLTZ sent compiler a large collection of vita on the MOW family; among these files was Wilma's handwritten note that Clarence died June 5, 1922. She also sent a photocopy of a typewritten transcription of a newspaper article. The newspaper name or date was not given. It does say that Clarence was taken to "Woodlawn Hospital"; this is located in Rochester. It also states that the accident occurred on the banks of the Tippecanoe River. This river does not flow through Argos. Clarence's age at the time of the accident is given as "36"; if his tombstone dates are accurate (1883-1921), he would have been 37 at the time of death.(1921) Also included in the MOW collection is a photocopy of the obituary for Clarence's wife in 1943. This obituary states that her former husband," Mr. MOW, passed away on June 5th, 1922."
____________________________________ (From typewritten copy of the newspaper obituary)
"PREMATURE BLAST KILLS FARMER" "Clarence MOW, lost life from dynamite explosion. Stories concerning accident conflict but evidence left by the explosion leads conclusively to fact that man was after a mess of fish. Clarence MOW, aged 36, a well-known farmer and school teacher, residing west of the Kentucky Stock Farm, on the north side of the Tippecanoe River, died at Woodlawn Hospital in this city Saturday morning, shortly after seven o'clock from the effects of a dynamite blast, which occurred on the bank of Tippecanoe River, Friday evening, shortly after five o'clock. Immediately following the accidental explosion the companions of the injured man, John and Jesse WALTZ, Charles SISSEL and Forest CALVERT took him to the Kentucky Stock Farm and from there to Woodlawn Hospital, where physicians at once stated his case was hopeless. The story of the accident as told by different people has several different angles, but after an investigation on the part of the reporter for this newspaper, as well as two other papers of this city, all circumstances point to the belief that MOW was in the act of hurling the stick of dynamite into a deep hole in the Tippecanoe River when the explosion came prematurely. Neighbors of the dead man told newspapermen that MOW was engaged in blowing a stump to make place for a gas engine when the accident occurred. On the north bank of the river, almost due south of the Kentucky Stock Farm and a bit northwest of the Ira McVEY farm, which is south of the river, the effect of the explosion was very plain on Saturday. The grass was burned or blown off even with the ground and all about were the tell-tale blood spots left by the injured man in his fall. As the explosion came, MOW's companions were nearby and when they rushed to his side they found a sickening sight. The left hand was blown off about the wrist, the right leg was shattered, both eyes were badly burned and almost blown fron their sockets, while the man's chest was peppered full of dirt and small bits of sticks. MOW was carried through the woods and taken in an unconscious condition to the road and then to the hospital, where death occurred the following morning without his re- gaining consciousness. Clarence MOW was born in this county, being the son of Marion MOW and at the time of his death was living on the MOW homestead, where he resided for several years. He...taught (school) in this county as well as in Michigan... Besides his wife he leaves four children: Ferman, Herschel, Othelia and Charles....four brothers, Clayton, Clyde, Dean and Leo MOW. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Richland Center. Burial was made in the Richland Center Cemetery. ---------------------- Per the 1920 census enumeration, Clarence's father, Marion L. MOW, and his brother, Clyde C. MOW, were both enumerated in Clarence's household on 02 Jan. 1920. Marion was 60 years of age, Clyde C. was 31. Marion was classified as "widowed." Eva (CLARK) MOW died in March, 1918; Marion may have been living with his son and daughter-in-law in 1920.

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: In the early 1990s compiler happened upon some STEININGER graves in Fulton and/or Marshall Counties in IN, whose owners were not familiar names. Compiler copied some of the data from these tombstones to keep on file "just in case" some of them became more meaningful as the family histories were recorded. In Dec., 1997, compiler's husband found considerable data on the "BUEHLER" family and the connections with other surnames such as HASSENPLUG, STEININGER, etc. on GenServ. Digging back into earlier notes, compiler found records of an interview with Byron GILCHRIST, as well as notes from a letter Byron had dictated to his daughter in April, 1997. Attempting to tie all of these together and to straighten out some erroneous or conflicting data, compiler searched for the cemetery notes mentioned above, but did not locate them. There exists much confusion in family tradition concerning Eliza (BEEHLER) STEININGER. In the early stages of this compiler's research, Margarett (STICHLER) STEININGER has written in a letter that Eliza had possessed a "sixth sense" that could well have saved the family from traveling in a large circle during their wagon journey from Ohio to Indiana. Since the BEEHLERs were found on the 1870 census in Indiana, and Eliza's place of birth was given as "Indiana" in 1864, this story did not seem plausible. Compiler thought this incident might have taken place in the reported move from Indiana to KANSAS; family stories per Margarett were that this was about 1855. Again this contradicts the data found on census records and other documents concerning members of the BEEHLER family and their time in IN. (Compiler found George and Mary BEEHLER on the Fulton Co. enumeration again in 1880, but Eliza was not enumerated in the household. Since the date of her marriage has been confirmed as 1883, this raises the question of her residence at census time in 1880.) In April, 1997, Byron GILCHRIST had his daughter, Mary, write a letter to compiler in his behalf. In that letter Byron stated that Eliza had gone to ARKANSAS. Data found on the GenServ (HASSENPLUG), places Eliza's death in Fulton County, IN in 1932. Since compiler was unable to locate earlier cemetery notes, this could not be supported by tombstone data at this time. Compiler's husband later found one of the children of Howard STEININGER's place of birth as "KANSAS". Until further research is completed, compiler has no recourse, but to report all of the above data without confirmation of accuracy (Jan., 1980). Mr. HASSENPLUG, in his data which appears on the GenServ network, states that Eliza and Howard STEININGER had a child "boy STEININGER" WHO was born in KANSAS. No other data is included in the HASSENPLUG work.

BIO: Per Obit. Charlotte (STEININGER) O'DELL was 41 yrs. of age at the time of her death. She died in the home of her dau. Mrs. Melvin (Wilma) COIL. Charlotte had been a resident of Tiosa, IN. Her parents moved to Fulton Co. (prob. from South Bend) "when she was a little girl". The family lived in Richland Twp. Survivors listed at the time of her death were: daus. Wilma COIL, Mary June O'DELL both of Mishawaka; a son had preceded Mrs. O'Dell in death; the husband, Frank O'DELL; and four bros.: Irvin STEININGER of Auburn; Herman STEININGER of Rochester; and George STEININGER Ft. Wayne (the 4th bro. is not named, or the name is cut out where the obit. is taped together.) The obituary states that Mrs. O'DELL had been ill for several months. In an interview with Byron GILCHRIST at his home in Indianapolis, June, 1996, Byron, in answer to compiler's questions about the STEININGER family, reported the following-- "George STEININGER was an uncle to Margarett STICHLER's husband, "Bud" STEININGER. Charlotte STEININGER, who married Frank O'DELL was a sister to George. George and Charlotte's mother was a sister to Grandma MOW (Catherine BEEHLER MOW). That sister was Eliza BEEHLER, wife of Howard STEININGER."

BIO: Listing from the South Germany Cemetery Index, p 79, lists this individual as "Elbe H. HASSENPLUG." "Henry Elbe" HASSENPLUG first appeared in the GenServ database, then compiler found him among notes taken earlier re census records, marriages in Fulton Co., IN, etc. The census record for that county for 1920 show "Elbe H. HASSENPLUG" as head of his household, 39 years of age, born in IN. His parents are recorded as born in PA and OH respectively. "Estella M." is 34 years old, born in IN. The couple report three children in their home -- Mabel S., 14, Obed B. 11, and Aleta R., 8. All three of the children were born in IN. Per that census record, the HASSENPLUGs were enumerated immediately following the household of David BEEHLER, 52, and wife, Emma.

Individual note: BIO: Estella May BEEHLER was the mother of Mabel (HASSENPLUG) BROWN, who is thought to have done much of the research on the BUEHLER/BEEHLER family history. Shortly after compiler began genealogical research on this and related families, she was informed by Margarett STEININGER and Wilma (MOW) FOLTZ that Mabel's work had been extensive, but no one seemed to know what had happened to it after Mabel's death. Compiler's husband found the BUEHLER family data on GenServ in Dec., 1997. The submitter was reported to be William HASSENPLUG, a resident of Lansing, MI. Further examination of the data available led to the information that William was a descendent of Mabel's brother, Obed Buehler HASSENPLUG.

General Notes for Child Mabel Celesta Hassenplug
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: "Mabel HASSENPLUG" has been a name compiler has heard many times in connection with a large amount of family history work on the BUEHLER/BEEHLER family. Several times Margarett (STICHLER) STEININGER and Wilma (MOW) FOLTZ have referred to data from Mabel's work. Both of these women have mentioned that after Mabel's death, they did not know what had happened to all of her files. Compiler has no confirmed answer to that question, however, after seeing William HASSENPLUG's name as the submitter of the BUEHLER data to GenServ, it seems likely that William may have inherited his aunt's large collection of family data. Compiler has made attempts to communicate with Mr. HASSENPLUG via the e-mail network, but there has been no response to requests that we exchange data.

Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Beehler.GED BIO: Byron GILCHRIST, nephew of Frank Beehler, reported to his daughter, as she was writing a etter to compiler for Byron, that Frank had gone to CA and had owned orange groves there. Compiler found 9-year-old Frank enumerated in his parents' household in Fulton County, IN in 1870. From Frank's age and place of birth as reported on that census and from the age and place of birth of his older sister, Catherine, compiler has calculated that the BEEHLERs probably migrated from OHIO to Fulton County, IN about 1860 or 1861. Franklin was the first of the BEEHLER children to be born in INDIANA. Compiler found no record of marriage for Franklin in Fulton County, however, he was not in his parents' household on enumeration day in 1880. There was a "Frank Beehler, 19, Servant, Laborer..." enumerated in household the surname of the head of that household. The given name of the HOH was "Josh"; his age was given as 53; his place of birth as "Ohio". His wife, Emma, was 50, also born in OH. Two adult daughters and one 29-year-old son, in addition to three other teenage members of this family were enumerated just prior to the name of Frank BEEHLER. No other information had been located on Frank BEEHLER until compiler's husband found the Wm. HASSENPLUG data entries on GenServ. Per Mr. HASSENPLUG, Frank married Mary Lavina LOLMAUGH in 1887. The location of that marriage was not given, nor was any source of the marriage date entered.

General Notes (Husband)

BIO: Compiler has been unable to find extensive data on George BEEHLER. Family tradition has reported that the parents of Catherine BEEHLER, wife of David B. MOW, was the child of George and Mary BEEHLER/BUEHLER. There have been some reports that George and his family left Fulton County, IN sometime around 1855 and moved westward. Yet, George and Mary "BEEHLER" were enumerated in Fulton County, IN in 1870 and 1880. Compiler was able to find no other information about this couple after 1880 in Fulton County or in the counties nearby. Several of their children, however, appeared on marriage and death records in Fulton and Marshall Counties in IN after 1880. In an interview with Byron GILCHRIST, great grandson of George BEEHLER, in the mid 1990s, Byron reported that George, Jr., son of George, left Fulton County about 1855 to migrate to KANSAS. Yet, there are records indicating that George, Jr. was not born until 1852. Compiler's husband discovered a database on the BUEHLER name on a genealogical web site on the internet in Dec., 1997. Further investigation resulted in downloading data on this family from the database of William HASSENPLUG of Lansing, MI. Mr. HASSENPLUG did not respond to attempts to contact him via his e-mail address, however, compiler is relatively sure that this gentleman is a descendent of the HASSENPLUG family who were residents of Fulton County, IN, and married into the BEEHLER/BUEHLER family in the early 1900s. Per data submitted by Mr. HASSENPLUG, compiler was able to add earlier generations of the BUEHLER family, as well as birth and death dates for George BUEHLER/BEEHLER, father of Catherine (BEEHLER) MOW. According to this data, George was born in GERMANY and died in WA; his wife, Mary (Anna Mary WIEHL) BEEHLER/BUEHLER, however, died in Labette County, KS. This would indicate that it is likely that some of the couple's family did migrate to KANSAS, but it would have been considerably later than reported previously. Mr. HASSENPLUG's data also includes a date and place of marriage for George and Anna Mary (WIEHL). Compiler feels the data given is probably accurate, since Huron County, OH would be very close to Sandusky County, where compiler's great grandmother/George's daughter, Catherine was born in 1859. GILCHRIST family tradition reports that George BUEHLER built a lovely corner cupboard for his daughter, Catherine after her marriage to David B. MOW. That cupboard stood in the home of William and Artiemicia (MOW) GILCHRIST for many years, but eventually was handed down to Rhea Ann STEININGER, the great grand daughter of Artiemicia's sister, Maine (MOW) STICHLER.

BIO: Compiler has been able to learn very little concerning the mother of Catherine (BEEHLER) MOW. Family reports had been that "Mary BUEHLER" (alternate spelling, BEEHLER) was Catherine's mother, but no one was able to give any details of Mary's origins. The U.S. Census records examined both report that her place of birth was "Bavaria". The family tradition that this couple moved from Fulton County, IN to somewhere in KANSAS in 1855 simply could not be confirmed, since Catherine was born in 1859 in OHIO and Mary and George appeared in census records in Fulton County in 1870. I n Dec., 1997, compiler's husband received computerized data on this family via a genealogy web service. The data found there was reported to have come from a William HASSENPLUG in Lansing, MI. Compiler's husband attempted to contact Mr. HASSENPLUG via e-mail, with a request to exchange family data. Mr. HASSENPLUG never responded to that request. Further research into the GenServe Site yielded additional data on the family, which compiler has chosen to include in this family history. It should be remembered, however, that no sources for the HASSENPLUG data has been found. Compiler feels that much of it, especially the marriage of George BUEHLER/BEEHLER to Anna Mary WIEHL is probably accurate, since Catherine, the couple's fifth or sixth child, was born in 1859 in Sandusky County, OH--very close to Huron County where HASSENPLUG reports the BUEHLERs were married in 1849. The parents of Anna Mary were identified in HASSENPLUG's data. Two other descendents0 of George BUEHLER/BEEHLER, Margarett STEININGER and Wilma (MOW) FOLTZ have both reported to compiler that "Mabel HASSENPLUG", an individual who has been mentioned many times by compiler's parents, in talking about friends and family living in and around Fulton County, IN, had a very extensive genealogy collection on the BEEHLER family. Both Margarett and Wilma have reported that they had no idea what might have happened to that collection after Mabel's death. Compiler suspects that William HASSENPLUG may have been a descendent of Mabel's, and that he might have inherited her work.

General Notes for Child Mary (Buehler) Beehler
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Nothing was known of this, the first child, of George and Mary BEEHLER until compiler's husband found the "BUEHLER" data on GenServ, a genealogy web site in Dec., 1997. William HASSENPLUG, the submitter of this family data, records Mary as having been the first of the BUEHLER/BEEHLER children. Since Mr. HASSENPLUG never responded to e-mail requests to exchange data, compiler has not been able to find out his sources of data on the family. It is suspected, however, that William, a nephew of Mabel (HASSENPLUG) BROWN, has inherited her research and files. In correspondence with both Wilma (MOW) FOLTZ and Margarett (STICKLER) STEININGER, compiler was told that Mabel HASSENPLUG had done extensive work on the BUEHLER/BEEHLER family. After Mabel's death, however, the whereabouts of her files was unknown. Compiler suspects that Mabel's nephew may have that material. In the data submitted to GenServ, Mr. HASSENPLUG gives only Mary "BUEHLER's" birth, death data and the date and identity of her spouse. After discovering that Mary was the child of George and Mary BUEHLER, compiler realized that a listing for the "BEEHLER, Mary and GRAEBER, Charles" was included in the photocopy of pages from a marriage index for Fulton County, IN, owned by compiler. Records for this marriage exist in the Marriage Books housed at the Fulton County Clerk's Office in Rochester, IN.

(WALTERS), in the South Germany Cemetery in Fulton County, IN. Marriage indexes for Fulton County show the marriage of George BUEHLER to Mary C. WALTERS in Dec., 1874, but also a marriage in 1912 of George BUEHLER to Rebecca JAMES (McMICHAEL). This later marriage would have occurred about three years after the death of Mary C. (WALTERS) BUEHLER. Apparently, the 1912 marriage was also the second for Rebecca McMICHAEL.

General Notes for Child Phillip H. Beehler Rev.

BIO: Per the 1870 Census, "Philip" was 14 years of age in Aug., 1870; he was born in Ohio. Compiler found no marriage recorded in Fulton County for Phillip, but Wm. HASSENPLUG, in his data submitted to GenServ gave the date of this marriage as 01 MAR 1880. Since Phillip did not appear in his parents' household on that census, this would be a reasonable claim. HASSENPLUG did not include the place of the marriage. Compiler found the graves of "Rev. Philip H. and Delphia A. BUEHLER" in the South Germany Cemetery in Fulton County, IN, where other members of this family were also buried. Several years after this discovery, compiler found "Philip" and "Delphie" BUEHLER on the 1920 census record for Richland Township, Fulton County, IN. Both were listed as 62 years of age; both born in OHIO. Phillip's occupation was listed as "Minister." Although Mr. HASSENPLUG's data states that Phillip died in St. Joseph County, IN, he was buried in South Germany Cemetery in Fulton County. His name on the tombstone has been spelled "Rev. Philip H. BUEHLER".

General Notes for Child John Beehler
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Compiler has been unable to locate further data on this son of George and Anna Mary BEEHLER/BUEHLER. He appeared as a 13-year-old in his parents' household on the 1870 census. By the 1880 enumeration, he was not there. While compiler found other members of the family buried at the South Germany Cemetery, John was not. No marriage was found in Fulton County Marriage Indexes. William HASSENPLUG did include John in the data he submitted to GenServ, but only dates and places of birth and death were given. No source was cited for that data.

General Notes for Child Catherine (Kate) Beehler
[bobspu.ged]
General Notes for Child Eliza Beehler
