Her Bennett family is traced back to 1505 in Somerset, England and came over from England in the mid 1600s and settled souther n Virginia in the Jamestown area. Almost all of her family lines , going way back, trace back to the wealthy southern Virginian a reas during the 1600s. Consequently, Mora was VERY proud of this background. Mora's father fought in the Civil War on the confederate side, e ven though Mora was born in Illinois. Apparently, Mora's mother, Martha Virginia Rogers, couldn't stand the idea of her husband fighting on the side of the Union. Martha "Sousie" Rogers moved herself and her daughter Ida (Mora's sister) back to Tennessee d uring the war to be with her father Asa Graves Rogers, an ardent southern sympathizer. My distant cousin Coleen McLaughlin DeCam p said that as long at the American Legion put flags on graves i n Salem, Illinois, Martha's grave got a confederate flag. Mora was the perfect example of longevity of life in her family too. When I was just seven years old, I heard about my GG-grandm other who was 107 years old. She died that same year, but I was always proud of the fact that my GG-grandmother was aware of me. Her family was filled with this kind of lengthy living for the women. Her mother lived to her late 80s, while her maternal gran dmother lived into her 90s. She even had a family line that cons istently reached their 100th birthday farther back on her mother 's side.
