General Notes for Child Baron William St. Clair Of Rosslyn
Because of the death of the sons of Sir Henry Sincl a i r i n S pain, the Barony of Rosslyn passed directly t o h i s gran dso n who was yet another William Sinclair. I t wa s t his Wil lia m Sinclair who married the daughter o f Mali se I I, the ' jarl u of Orkney, which resulted in t he 'jar ldom ' of Orkne y even tually coming to the Sinclai rs of Ro sslyn . This occu rred i n 1379 when King Haakon V I of Norw ay gra nted the Orc adian E arldom to William's s on, Henr y Sinclai r. This was r eally th e peak of Sinclai r power . They owne d large Estate s througho ut Scotland p lus 20 0 strategicall y placed island s in the No rth Atlan tic - t he stepping sto nes to the New W orld. Princ e Henr y, as h e became known, w as also the premi er tjar l u o f Norwa y by virtue of his des cent from the Hous e o f Moere . He w as certainly one of th e most powerful m e n in 14th Cen tur y Europe, controlling t he northern acc es s to the Atlant i c Ocean and with a larg e fleet when s hip s represented p ower.

In succeeding years, the Sinclairs strengthened their p o s i t ion in Scotland. King Robert the Bruce presented a s wor d t o ano ther Si r William Sinclair (of the Hermandsto n Br anch ). H e made ano ther William Sinclair (of the Ros sly n Branc h) Bi shop of Dun keld and took his brother, He nr y Sinclair , int o his own ser vice.

It was to this Henry Sinclair that he entrusted th e d u t y o f taking his heart to the Holy Land on his deat h. On their way to the Hol y Land , they wer e persua ded t o help the Spanish in thei r battl e against t he Moor s and, f or their pains, were k illed a t the Battl e of Teb a in 1330 . However, the Moor s though t so much o f the coura ge of th e Scottish knight s that th ey gave perm ission for t heir bodi es to be retu rned to Sc otland.
