General Notes (Husband)
At the time of his research, Patrick C. Smith was unable to prove a definite connection with the Pennsylvania Sellers line. However, he states: "There was a great migration southward from the Pennsylvania-Maryland area in the 1750's and 60's, just prior to the Revolutionary War, and a great part of the Piedmont sections of North and South Carolina was settled as a result of this movement south. George, Sr., may have been born in the North and brought to North Carolina as a child by his parents, or may have lived to maturity in the North and migrated southward on his own about the time of the War.
The Froneberger cemetery contains a number of old Sellers graves, indicating a close relationship between the two families from the earliest time they were both in that part of North Carolina. Sellers and Froneberger are both names of German or Dutch origin, and the two families could very well have moved southward together.
There are only three known children of George Sellers, Sr. and Susannah: (This list differs from other research): George, Jr. - born March 5, 1794 Phillip Felix Source: "Sellers-McLaughen" papers by Patrick C. Smith, 1971, rev. 1984
George Sellers Sr. was of age to have taken part in the Revolutionary War. My mother (Fay Sellers Smith) told me that her father's people took part in the Battle of Kings Mountain (1781). This could only have been George, Sr. and/or the Fronebergers.

Wife possibly Susannah?. A Susannah Sellers, died Jan 19 1843, aged 83 years is buried right next to George Sellers, tombstone reading: George Sellers died Dec 3rd 1839 aged 83 years. (See note below:) ******************** We know that Philip Sellers (1724-1808) of Pennsylvania had two sons who settled in North Carolina: George and John. [Because of the duplication of names, I will refer to this George and John as "George Sr." and "John Sr." and to George Sr.'s sons as George Jr. and John Jr. John Sr. apparently had no children, and in his will left all his property to two of George Sr.'s sons, John Jr. and Henry.
George Sellers (1756-1839) and his brother John migrated to North Carolina during the 1790s. They settled in what was then Lincoln County and became farmers. John seems to have had no children (he left his property to his nephews), but George and his wife Susanna Best had several children. Two of their sons were also named George and John and have been the source of much confusion. Gaston County Research Timeline
Bath was formed in 1696 from territories south of the Albemarle River. Bladen was formed in 1734. Anson was formed from Bladen in 1750. Mecklenburg was formed from Anson in 1762. Tryon was formed from Mecklenburg County in 1768. Tryon existed as a County until Lincoln and Rutherford were formed from Tryon County in1779. Cleveland was formed from Lincoln and Rutherford in 1841. Gaston was formed in 1846 from Lincoln and the most western edge of present Cleveland. Cleveland gained some territory from Gaston in 1921. The most southern part of Gaston had ancestors recorded in what is now Spartanburg, Cherokee and York Counties S.C.
Prior to surveys of 1764 and 1772, "much of the territory in the north-central and north-western part of South Carolina was considered to be North Carolina. The South Carolina counties of Marlboro, Chesterfield, Lancaster, York, Chester, Union, Spartanburg, Cherokee, and portions of Greenville, Laurens and Newberry are involved." (_Guide to South Carolina Research and Records_, by Brent Holcomb, Colombia, SC, 1991, p. 37) Much of Tryon County, NC became SC after the 1772 survey. In fact, the Tryon County courthouse had to be moved!

The land on which Cherryville now stands was originally known as "White Pine". During the last half of the 18th century, Scotch-Irish and German families from the Colony of Pennsylvania migrated south and settled into the "panhandle" section of Gaston County. Land grants by the king of England date back to 1768, and as early as 1792 Governor Samuel Ashe of North Carolina made original land grants in and around "White Pine". By this token Cherryville can be considered one of the oldest cities in Gaston County.
The village began to develop at a crossroads on Old Post Road. 'Ibis road served as a main thoroughfare between Salisbury, NC and Spartanburg, SC. In 1853, Henry Summit's Cross Roads Store, first store in the area, was established on this famous road.
Downtown Cherryville (Turn of the century) It was in 1862 that the Wilmington-Charlotte-Rutherford Railroad (later known as Carolina Central Railroad) reached White Pine. With the arrival of rail transportation, more homes and small businesses appeared in the village. On November 2, 1865, near the close of the Civil War, the name White Pine was changed to Cherryville.

General Notes (Wife)
"Some recent discoveries have led me to challenge these beliefs. Thanks to my cousin Brenda we found the Froneberger Cemetery where George, Sr and some of his family are buried. According to her gravestone, Susannah Best actually died in 1843, so George could not (legally, anyway) be Eli and company's father. Actually what this means is that he could not be the George Sellers who married Anna Mary in 1818. Also next to Anna Mary's gravestone is a small, crudely carved stone that has been read as C. Sellers, d. May 22 1836. I think that possibly the period after the "C" is really the "tail" of a G, and this is George Sellers, Jr. If George died in 1836 instead of 1825-26 as we believed, then there is no reason he can't be the father of our progenitor." General Notes for Child George Sellers Jr.
Annotated Federal Census info for the Sellers family of NC Lincoln, Cleveland, and Macon Counties All comments in parentheses are my commentary, and merely represent my guesses on the identities of the people involved. In addition, the census (especially in the early years) was notoriously inaccurate, and the handwriting of census takers is often hard to decipher. Be warned.

MINDY'S PAGE Mindy Green bonanza@nc.rr.com (March, 2001) http://home.nc.rr.com/bonanzajb/gene/sellers.html
My name is Mindy Green and I am descended from George Sellers (1755/56-1839)of PA and Lincoln Co., NC. On your Lincoln County page you quote from my website at http://home.nc.rr.com/bonanzajb/gene/sellers.html
I was wondering if you would mind putting a link to my site on the page, before or after the quote so people can find out about updates and more information. You could also list my new email address at bonanza@nc.rr.com (it's recently changed.) You also might be interested to see the two Sellers wills I have transcribed. They're available from http://home.nc.rr.com/bonanzajb/gene/will.html
I hope to have some new info up soon. I recently found the (much-overgrown) Froneberger cemetery where George Sellers and some of his family are buried. Here are some of my observations about what I found:
According to the IGI, George Sellers (1756-1839) was married three times; first to Susannah Best (?d. before 1809, mother of George Jr, John, Philip, Henry, and Caty among others), second to Magdalena Schneider (who he married in PA, mother of Felix), and third, debatedly, to Anna Mary Froneberger.
My info is from a woman I met over the internet, who was a descendant of Felix. She had done a lot of research and had info to back it up, but unfortunately when my hard drive perished I lost all the emails we had exchanged, and her snail and email addresses. I'm pretty sure I have a printout somewhere, but I'll have to dig. In any case, according to her, George was married twice; to Susannah Best and Magdalena Schneider, and his son George actually married Anna Mary Froneberger. They had one son Philip who was raised by his uncle Philip after George Jr's death (presumably in 1825 or thereabouts.) She believes that Eli and siblings were actually the children of John Sellers and Mary Rush.
With all that in mind we went to the Froneberger cemetery. In a line are Barbara Sellers, Philip Sellers, Susannah Sellers, George Sellers, Anna M. Sellers, and a small stone that reads C. Sellers. Barbara and Philip's graves are similar and the dates support our belief that this is George Sr's son Philip and his wife Barbara Froneberger. Susannah and
George's stones are identical as befits a husband and wife, and are also signed by the carver, WNC. His reads: In memory of George Sellers died Dec. 3rd 1839 aged 83 years, which fits with everything we know about him. Hers however was a surprise. It says she died Jan 19, 1843, aged 83
years. (The four in 1843 was hard to read, but we rubbed it and you can definitely see the angle and the crossbar of a "4".) If this really is Susannah Best, as I believe it is, then George Sr. cannot (legally) have married either Magdalena Schneider, or Anna Mary Froneberger!
Anna Mary Froneberger's stone is in fact next to George Sr's, but on it's other side is C. Sellers, died May 22 1836 (or 1830 - the stone is very poorly carved). This is the only other Sellers buried there except for an Eli F Sellers, who I think may have been a child. What if the C. (with a period very close to the bottom of the "C") was actually a G? And this is George Sellers, Jr? The dates aren't right, but I don't think we ever knew his death date with any certainty.
Coming at it from another angle, Anna Mary's headstone reads born Jan 3 1793 died Nov 22 1869, so in 1850 she would have been 57 years old. However, in the 1850 Cleveland Co census, Eli (age 30) appears living with his brothers and his mother, Mary, age 50. It's just another reason to believe Anna Mary was not Eli's mother.
I hope this is of interest. Any light you can shed on all this would be much appreciated.
