Charles Bowen Betts was chaplain during the Civil War of the6thRegiment & 12th regiment, S.C. Infantry, McGowans Brigade,WilcoxDivision, A.P.Hill's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Itwasorganized on Sept. 1, 1861 and mustered in the ConfederateserviceSept. 1, 1861 for the war. While serving as chaplain of the6thRegiment, he had a thrilling experience that nearly cost him hislife.With three companions, William Creight of Winnsboro, S.C. andHassieand Russell of Charleston, he visited a part of the regimentstaionedat the mouth of the Stono River near Charleston, S.C. At 6P.M. theystarted to return to their quarters and very shortlyafterwards theirboat capsized. For three hours they clung to theupturned boat in thewater. They were at last rescued by some Negroesin a boat. Mr. Bettswas unconscious when rescued and remained so until12 o'clock. He waspastor of Union And Neely's Creek Churches.
