General Notes (Husband)
[18401.ged]
Notes from Dianna Nading: William Downing was born in 1762 in Bart Township, PA, the youngest son of William and Ellen (John) Downing. He was raised in Bart Township, Lancaster county, PA, in a strict Quaker environment. In 1781 he was married to Phoebe Beckett, daughter of Samuel and Mary Beckett, and the couple had eight children
William, jointly with his brother Samuel, had inherited land and mills (gris and saw mills) when their father died in 1788. The will indicated that the brothers and their heirs and assigns were to "share and share alike the land, Merchant, Grist, and Saw Mills". At the time of his father's death, William wa 26 years old and had been married seven years, having four children.
No record indicates whether the partnership was dissolved, but William move to Frederick county, Virginia, sometime after 1788 (probably 1791).
On Nov. 7, 1791, a certificate of membership for the family was granted at the Hopewell Friends Meeting (Quaker) indicating a transfer from the Sadsbury Friends congregation in Lancaster county, PA. Certificates were granted to William, his wife Phoebe, and his children: Ruth, Eleanor, Mary, John, Sarah, and Phoebe.
The history of Hopewell Friends shows that William was indeed an active member of the congregation, serving on numerous committees, including one to visit friends who had been dismissed. Daughters Ruth and Eleanor were both married at Hopewell, and William and Pheobe were listed as witnesses to many weddings of other members.[Downing.ged]

General Notes for Child John Downing
[18401.ged]
John Downing was born in Lancaster county, PA, about 1783. He was raised in a strict Quaker environment, and sometimes after 1788 his parents left Lancaste county, later living in Frederick county, VA. In 1807 he was married to Abigail White, daughter of Deborah Lee White and granddaughter of Anthony and Abigail Lee, who were also Quakers. John and Abigail "married contrary to discipline" and were dismissed from the Quaker religion of their childhood. After their marriage, John and Abigail Downing farmed in Berkely county, VA, where their ten children were born. Berkeley county was a part of Virginia at the time, but was separated into West Virginia when West Virginia was created as a state in 1862. Berkeley county, WV, adjoins Frederick county, VA. In 1831 the family left Berkeley county, moved to Clark county, Ohio, for a brief period, moved to Elkhart county, Indiana, for a period, then to Henry county, Iowa. by 1840 the family was settled in Iowa. The family is listed there in the 1840 census. Before his death, John and his family moved south into the next county, Jefferson, where at least four of his sons had acquired land and were farmers. A listing of the original land entries for Jefferson county, Iowa, shows the lands acquired by John Downing's sons. It must have been discouraging to the father, William, to see his children deserting their Quaker religion. Over the years, John, Mary, and Phoebe were all dismissed from the membership for marrying "contrary to discipline". Sarah was called before the meeting to answer testimony against her.[Downing.ged]
