LAMBERT JOCHEMSE VAN VALCKENBURCH (Valckenburgh, Valkenbe r g , Valckenborch), born at Valkenburg in Dutch Limburg , o n th e Geule River, seven miles east of Maestrict, in H olla nd, a ppears first of record in America, July 29, 1644 , whe n he p urchased of Jan Jacobsen, a house and plantati on o n the isl and of Manhattan, with twenty-five morgens o f lan d adjoinin g. [Register of the Provincial Secretary o f Ne w Netherland , II, 121.] (Evjen's Scandinawan Immigran ts i n New York (pa ge 406) erroneously places Lambert a s a Germ an from Falkenb urg in Germany, having been misle d by the s imilarity of pla ce names). The grantor was Ja n Jacobsen St ille van Vreeland t who died or left New Amst erdam soon aft er this sale.

Many years later the land became a part of the farm of Co l o nel Nicholas Bayard who died in 1707 -- This land is o n t h e west side of the present Bowery from Canal Street t o Br oo me Street. There is no record of the disposal of th ese t wen ty-five morgens (fifty acres) of land and the hou se o f Lamb ert van Valckenburch. It is stated in The Icono graph y of Ma nhattan Island (VI,72) that he "may have surr endere d this f arm to the [West India] Company when he acq uired t he trac t opposite to Kip's Bay plantation," late r known a s the Sam ler farm.

This latter property was of twenty-four morgens, grant e d b y Director General Peter Stuyvesant to Lambert van Va lc kenb urch, on May 15, 1649 -- It embraced what are now n in e cit y blocks on the west side of Lexington Avenue fro m Tw enty-N inth to Thirty-Fifth Streets, and extended, wes tward , acros s what are now Park and Madison Avenues beyon d Fift h Avenu e from Thirty-First to Thirty-Third Street , and inc luded th e corner of the present Thirty-Third Str eet and Fi fth Avenu e, on which stood, until 1929 the sout heastern pa rt of th e Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, and wherein 1 931 was erec ted the E mpire State Building, then the highe st building i n the worl d.

The confirmation of title to this property issued in 16 6 8 [ Libci- Patents, III, 43, Albany] by Richard Nicolls , Go vern or of the Province of New York, refers to the gro und-b rie f from Stuyvesant to Lambert van Valckenburgh, da ted Ma y 15 , 1649, covering 48 acres (24 morgens), and rec ites th at th e land was conveyed to Claes Martensen. Thi s later ow ner i s identified in the Iconography of Manhatt an Island ( VI,138 ), viz.:

Claes Martensen van Rosenvelt, the ancestor of the Roosev e l t family, occupied the farm originally granted to Lambe r t v an Valckenburgh, at least as early as 1635. Probabl y h e sol d his farm to Claes Martensen when he went nort h [165 2]. Di ngman Versteeg identified Martensen as Nicola s Marte ns, men tioned in a court record as early as Augus t 26) 163 8. He i s said to have been the direct ancestor o f Theodor e Rooseve lt who was born less than a half-mile d istant.

The surname of Roosevelt was adopted by the children of N i c olas Martensen, in place of Nicolsen and Martensen, bec au s e Roosevelt was the name of the place in Holland fro m whi c h their father had come to America.

On January 25, 164.4, a declaration of Olaf Stevensen v a n C ortland and Gysbert Opdyck refers to a statement of L am ber t van Valckenburch respecting property of Peter Live se n dec eased. {Register of the Provincial Secretary of Ne w N etherl and, II, 95-] Lambert Van Valckenburch seems t o hav e reside d upon the fifty-acre farm he purchased of J an Jac obsen, a t least until March 16, 1647, when he was g ranted , by the D irector General of New Netherland, a pate nt fo r a lot on th e south side of Fort Amsterdam, Manhatt an Isl and.[ Land Pap ers of the Province of New Netherland , G.G. , p. 192.]

Here he may have lived until he removed to Fort Orange ab o u t 1652, as his second farm, acquired May 15, 1649, wa s ov e r two miles northward in a region sparsely settled , not w el l developed, and far beyond the defensive wall b uilt acr os s the island at Wall Street to protect the vill age aroun d F ort Amsterdam from Indians and others. The ho use and ga rde n location close under the southern wall o f Fort Amster da m was of such prominence and interest as t o merit furthe r n otice.

The fort stood on the southwestern half of the site o f t h e present U.S. customhouse. The distance from the for t t o t he harbor was much less then than it is now. This l an d pate nted to Lambert van Valckenburch was nine rods an d o ne foo t long (north and south) by one rod and three fe et w ide. Th e northern end of this lot would be about fift y t o sixty fe et south of the southwestern corner of the U .S . Customhouse ; the southern end was directly upon the S tra nd, the narro w open space between the lot and the harb or . This positio n gave an unobstructed view, from the lot , o ver the entir e harbor. The grant of the lot was made f or t he creation th ereon of house and garden.

It was a corner lot bounded by open public ways on thre e s i des. This land is outlined as lot No. 1, in Block H o f t h e key to the famous ancient Castello plan of New Amst erda m . This plan depicts a house upon the southern end o f th e la nd, exactly in the east-and-west center of the so uther n en d of Manhattan Island. As Lambert van Valckenbur ch wa s th e first grantee of this land, and, as when he so ld i t in 16 56 to Isaac Gravenraedt (Greveract), his hous e ther eon wa s sold with the land, It is conceived that h e buil t the hou se. This lot was one of the only three (al l grant ed in 1647 ) south of the fort.

The lot next to the west was granted to, and patented b y , J an Evertsen Bout, the interpreter of the language o f th e In dians, and the other to Sergeant Huybertsen (th e Engli shman , James Hubbard). Lambert van Valckenburch re moved t o For t Orange and Beverwyck (Albany) about four ye ars befo re h e sold this house and land to Gravenraedt i n 1656, and , als o, seemingly before his farm of forty-eig ht acres wa s enter ed upon by Claes Martensen in 1655 -- G ravenraedt s old th e house and lot beside Fort Amsterdam t o Pieter Jans en Clot t of Mingaquy in New Yarsie March 23 , 1670, when th e hous e was described in the deed of sal e as "an old Tenne ment. " In 1673 the English commander o f New York (New Amst erdam) , Captain Colve, confiscated th is house and lot, wit h the t wo others aforesaid, for mili tary purposes. These h ouses ar e depicted in several of th e earliest pictures o f New Amste rdam.

The site of the original lot would be now a strip 148 1 / 2 f eet long by 19 1/2 feet wide, beginning opposite th e so uthw estern corner of the U.S. Customhouse in State St reet , an d running southward to near the center of Batter y Park . A d rawing in The Iconography of Manhattan Islan d [II, 27 3,274 , 388) outlines the bounds of this land, a s well as t he bou ndaries of the farm bought in 1644 of Ja n Jacobsen a nd of t he farm secured in 1649 of Director Ge neral Stuyves ant.

Lambert Jochemse van Valckenburch of Fort Orange (Present day Albany, New York)

From The Washington Ancestry and Records of the McClain , J o hnson and Forty Other Colonial American Families

Prepared for Edward Lee McClain by Charles Arthur Hoppi n . G reenfield, Ohio - Privately Printed 1932

Contributed by Karl J. Van Valkenburgh

The earliest record of the presence at Fort Orange (Alba n y ) of Lambert van Valckenburch is dated March 7, 1652 , i n th e proceeding of the court of Rensselaerswyck, whe n Cla es Ja nsz, from Bockhoven, also recorded as Claes d e Braeba nder , Holland, was summoned to court for having , out of sp ite a gainst Director Van Slichtenhorst, cause d his servan t to ha ul wood for Lambert van Valckenburch , contrary to t he ordin ances. [Van Rensselaer-Bowier MSS. , p. 843.]

In the appendix to a letter, dated January 15, 1653, fr o m t he directors of the West India Company, at the Chamb e r at A msterdam, Holland, to the "High and Mighty Lords , th e State s General," and containing complaints agains t the p atroon a nd directors of the colony of Rensselaersw yckin th e provinc e of New Netherland occurs the complain t that th e patroon a nd directors, "forbid, even on pain o f corpora l punishment , any wood to be cut or hauled for t hose at Fo rt Orange, an d a certain man named Claes Janse n of Boeckho ven was by gre at favor amerced in a fine of f ifty guilder s solely becaus e he had carted some firewoo d for one Lambe rt van Valckenbu rg, an inhabitant of the a foresaid Fort. " [Transcripts of D ocuments in the Royal Ar chives at the H ague and in the Stad hays of the City of Am sterdam, Holland , Documents VII. Docu ments Relative to th e Colonial Histor y of New York, 7,525.]

Lambert himself was summoned on Tuesday, March 31, 1654 ( t r anslation):

It is resolved to have Lambert van Valckenburgh summon e d t o appear in court on account of the things done or co mm itte d by him last Wednesday two weeks ago at the hous e o f Gerri t Jansz from Swoll, together with the witnesse s wh o were pr esent. . . .Tuesday, April 28, 1654. . . . . Gerri t Jansz fr om Swoll being summoned by the cou rt to give tes timony to t he truth in regard to the disput e which took pl ace at his h ouse between Andries Herpertse n and Lambert va n Valcken-bor gh at the time of the depart ure of the Hon. G eneral, the de fendant's second default [ is entered agains t him].

The Honorable General seems to have been Slichtenhorst w h o , after contending against Peter Stuyvesant, was oblig e d t o return to Holland. What occasioned the controvers y do es n ot appear. If Lambert was defending Stuyvesant, w ho ha d gra nted to him the land beside Fort Amsterdam in 1 647 an d th e farm of forty-eight acres in 1649) it would n ot be u nique , because Stu/vesant's authority over Fort Or ange an d the c olony of Rensselaerswyck, while not to be c hallenge d succes sfully, were not always relished by som e of the in habitant s there. [Minutes of the Court, of For t Orange an d Renssela erswyck pp. 131, 136.] As "Lammert v an Valckenbo rgh," he wit nessed on August 31, 1654, at For t Orange th e declaration o f Jan Labatie; five days late r his name app ears in the tex t of a declaration by "the h onorable Willia m Janse Stoll" ( alias Hap) as "Lammert Va n Valckenbergh" ; and at the end o f that declaration, wher e he "made his m ark" as a witness , his name appears, as w ritten by Joanne s Dyckman, commissa ry at Fort Orange, "Le mmert Van den Ber gh"; he is also name d in the deed of sal e of a house by Ja n Labatie to Adriae n Janse (Appel) va n Leyden, on Novembe r 11, 1654, as "Lambe rt Van Valckenbo rgh." [Early Record s of the City and Count y of Albany, pp . J, 199, 204, 212 , 223.] The translator an d editor of th e Dutch Van Renssel aer-Bowier Manuscrifts ren ders the nam e (pp. 843, 845) "La mbert van Valckenburch," wh ich form m ay be accepted as th e Dutch ancient spelling.

The court of Fort Orange and the village of Beverwyck w e r e erected on April 10, 1652, by the order of Peter Stuy ve sa nt. At the session of this court of August 26, 1652 , th e mi nutes read (translation) : "Adriaen Jansz from Le yden , plai ntiff, against Lambert van Valckenburgh, defend ant , for th e sum of fl. 535 in beavers." At the session o f Oc tober 17 , 1656 (translation): "Gossen Gerritsen, plai ntiff , agains t Lambert van Volckenborch, defendant. Owin g to no nappearan ce of the defendant, default is entered a gainst h im." At th e session of Tuesday, October 20, 165 4 (translat ion): "Lamb ert van Valckenburgh has requeste d to have a lo t. Postpone d until the drawing of lots."

As an officer of the law, serving in a company for the pr e s ervation of law and order and in general defense of th e c om munity, Lambert testified at the court of Tuesday, F ebru ar y 8, 1656, viz. (translation) :

interrogatories upon which, at the request of Johan de De c k ere, commissary and officer here, is to be heard and ex am in ed 'Lambert van Valckenburch, sergeant of the burghe r co mpa ny, being summoned by the court to give testimony.

Whether he, the witness, yesterday, a week ago, in the ev e n ing, was not molested on the public highway because h e , a s ergeant, by order of his captain, wanted to take o n e Willia m Hap to the guard house? Answer, Yes.

Who the aforesaid persons were and how many of them? General Notes (Husband)

The Prophet Muhammad The line is disputed at Zaida. The Prophet Muhammad traced his ancestry back to Adnan around 100 BC. This looks plausible - I am unsure what the professional consensus on it is. Beyond that, this attempt to link Adnan to the Biblical Abraham is obvious mythology. Apart from anything else, even if Abraham existed, he would have lived something like 2300 BC. This note suggests a descent from The Prophet Muhammad to Aurea, grandmother of Toda Aznarez. But then the web disagrees that the latter left descendants. Further Information:

Mohammed or Mahomet

Sex: Male History: (Western forms of Arabic Muhammad) Life: (c.570-c.632) Founder of Islam, born in Mecca, the son of Abdallah, a poor merchant. Orphaned at six, he was cared for first by his grandfather, then by his uncle, and earned his living by tending sheep. At 25 he led the caravans of a rich widow, whom he later married. He continued as a merchant, but spent much of his time in solitary contemplation. When he was 40, Gabriel appeared to him on Mt Hira, near Mecca, and commanded him in the name of God to preach the true religion. Four years later he was told to come forward publicly as a preacher. The basis of his teaching was the Koran, which had been revealed to him by God. He attacked superstition, and exhorted people to a pious, moral life, and belief in an all-powerful, all-just, and merciful God, who had chosen him as his prophet. God's mercy was principally to be obtained by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. At first dismissing him as a poet, the Meccans finally rose against him and his followers. He sought refuge at Medina in 622 (the date of the Mohammedan Era, the Hijra), and assumed the position of highest judge and ruler of the city. He then engaged in war against the enemies of Islam. In 630 he took Mecca, where he was recognized as chief and prophet, and thus secured the new religion in Arabia. In 632 he undertook his last pilgrimage to Mecca, and there on Mt Arafat fixed the ceremonies of the pilgrimage (Hajj). He fell ill after his return, and died at the house of the favourite of his nine wives, Aïshah, the daughter of Abu Bakr.

MARIA THERESA (1717-1780) was Holy Roman empress, queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and archduchess of Austria. She was a powerful force in European affairs and one of the wisest and most able rulers in Austrian history. With the aid of her brilliant chancellor and foreign minister, Prince Kaunitz, she managed foreign affairs skillfully. Her economic reforms promoted the prosperity of her empire. She had 16 children. One daughter, Marie Antoinette, was queen of France (see MARIE ANTOINETTE).

Maria Theresa was born in Vienna. Her father, Emperor Charles VI, was the last male Habsburg (or Hapsburg) heir. In 1724, he announced publicly a decree, called a Pragmatic sanction, that had been issued privately in 1713. This decree allowed Maria Theresa to inherit his territories. The rulers of the principal states of Europe accepted the decree and promised not to attack Maria Theresa's lands (see PRAGMATIC SANCTION).

Charles VI died in 1740. Prussia was the first to attack in the War of the Austrian Succession and was soon joined by Bavaria, France, and Spain. They all claimed parts of Maria Theresa's territories in spite of their promises. At first, Sardinia and Saxony also opposed Maria Theresa. But they later joined the Netherlands and Britain in aiding Maria Theresa's forces in the war. In 1745, Maria Theresa's husband, Francis Stephen, former Duke of Lorraine, became Holy Roman emperor as Francis I. But she kept control over most state affairs.

The War of the Austrian Succession ended in 1748 with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. By this treaty, Maria Theresa lost almost all of the rich province of Silesia to Frederick II of Prussia (see FREDERICK II [Of Prussia]). The powers of Europe recognized her rights to her other possessions. See SUCCESSION WARS.

During the early 1750's, Maria Theresa strengthened her power at home and built a large army. In 1756, while she was planning to seek revenge for the loss of Silesia, Frederick II suddenly attacked again. The Seven Years' War followed, and Maria Theresa was forced to give up all claims to Silesia (see SEVEN YEARS' WAR). Her husband died in 1765, and her oldest son became Holy Roman emperor as Joseph II. In 1772, Maria Theresa joined with Russia and Prussia in a division of Poland and gained most of the region of Galicia. In 1775, she took the region of Bukovina from Turkey. Maria Theresa died in Vienna.

General Notes for Child Marie Antoinette Habsburg-Lotharingen Of Austria

MARIE ANTOINETTE, pronounced an twuh NEHT (1755-1793), was the beautiful queen of France who died on the guillotine during the French Revolution. Her frivolity and plotting helped undermine the monarchy.

The young queen was lively and extravagant. The stiff formalities of court life bored her, so she amused herself with such pleasures as fancy balls, theatricals, and gambling. Marie lacked a good education and cared very little for serious affairs. She did not hesitate to urge the dismissal of the able ministers of France whose efforts to reduce royal spending threatened her pleasures. Louis XVI gave her the chateau called the Petit Trianon, where the queen and her friends amused themselves (see VERSAILLES, PALACE OF).

Marie became very unpopular and was blamed for the corruption of the French court. She lavished money on court favorites and paid no attention to France's financial crisis. Vicious stories were told about her. One of these stories illustrates the haughty attitude people associated with her name. According to the story, Marie once asked an official why the Parisians were angry. "Because they have no bread," was the reply. "Then let them eat cake," said the queen. The suffering people of Paris readily believed this false story.

Her Early Life. Marie was born in Vienna. She was the youngest and favorite daughter of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa, rulers of the Holy Roman Empire. Marie was brought up in the hope that she might one day be queen of France. She married the French dauphin (crown prince) in 1770. Four years later, he became King Louis XVI, and Marie became queen.

The Revolution. Tragedy struck Marie twice in 1789. Her eldest son died, and the French Revolution started. Her weak-willed husband lost control of the nation. Marie tried to stiffen King Louis' will, but only made people angrier by her stubborn opposition to the revolutionary changes.

The king, partly on Marie's advice, assembled troops around Versailles twice in 1789. Both times violence followed, and royal authority became weaker. The second time, early in October 1789, a hungry and desperate Parisian crowd marched to Versailles and forced the royal family to move to the Tuileries palace in Paris. From then on, Louis and Marie were virtual prisoners.

The rulers might have been able to rally the nation in support of a constitutional monarchy like that of England, had they followed the advice of moderate statesmen like the Comte de Mirabeau (see MIRABEAU, COMTE DE). Instead, Marie Antoinette plotted for military aid from the rulers of Europe--especially from her brother, Leopold II of Austria. She refused to make any concessions at all to the revolutionists.

Downfall of the Monarchy. Finally, Marie influenced Louis to flee from Paris on the night of June 20, 1791. The royal family set out in disguise by carriage for the eastern frontier of France. But an alert patriot recognized the king from his picture on French paper money. The king and queen were halted at Varennes, and returned under guard to Paris. The flight of Louis and Marie made the people distrust their rulers even more. But Louis promised to accept a new constitution that limited his powers.

Marie now worked to get aid from abroad, and, when war with Austria and Prussia came in 1792, she passed military secrets on to the enemy. The people suspected such treason. On Aug. 10, 1792, they threw the royal family into prison, ending the monarchy. Louis XVI died on the guillotine on Jan. 21, 1793. After bravely enduring imprisonment, Marie Antoinette, called Widow Capet by the revolutionists, was tried for treason. She died on the guillotine on Oct. 16, 1793.
