In an early period of Klamath County's history, Harr y H o w a rd VanValkenburg became identified with the secti on b et we e n Linkville and Keno, havingarrived here whe n a la d o f 1 5 w ith his parents in 1881. Born in Rockfo rd, Ill inoi s, M arc h 23, 1866, he was the son of Georg e and Jose phin e (Bil lick ) Van Valkenburg. His father w as also a n ativ e of Roc kford , and noted for his activit ies in the C ivi l War, fo r as a L ieutenant of the 74th I llinoisInfant ry , he serve d out the f irst enlistment an d was wounded f iv e times. Hi s demise occ urred at Pecat onica, Ill in 18 67 . The mothe r was born nea r Racine, W is Mar 15,1845, a n d married Lieut enant Van Valke nburg i n Ill in 1861. Fol lo winghis death sh e moved to Iow a whe re, in Nov 1871, sh e m arried Ky Taylor , afarmer of th a t State. They locate d ne ar Klamath Fall s (Linkville ) in 18 82 andlater Mr. Ta ylo r opened a barbe r shop on M ain St in L inkville, whic h h e operatedfor man y years . Mrs. Taylor too k a great i nter est in community a ffai rs of thatearly day an d wa s a chart er menber of Aloh a C hapter No 61, Order of Eas t ernStar. S he passed awa y i n Klamath Falls on March 24, 19 1 2.
Harry Howard Van Valkenburg attended school in Iow a a n d t h e WillametteValley and early in life started wo rki n g fo r th e ranchers on the outskirts of Linkville . Whe n a bou t 25 ye ars old he purchased a general stor e andjew elr y bus iness i n town and also operated a stag e office f or t wo lin es, from Ager to Lakeview and Klamat h Falls t o Ashla nd, Ore gon. H e had purchased a half in terest i n the tele graph sy stem an d operated the first t elephon e systemin Kl amath Fal ls. Aft er 12 years of thi s strenu ous life, Mr V V purchase d the ran ch where the W eyerhaeus er mill now sta nds, 1400 a cres in on e parcel,w here he ra n 600 head of be ef cattle . The cattl e were dr iven to Mo ntague and Gazell e. Oft-ti mes hardship s wer e endured du ring these early d ays and MrV V recalls t h e vicissitude s of the Winter of 18 89-90 when t he sno w wa s 3 1/2deep i n the streets and grea t numbers o f sto ck wer e lost durin g the Winter. Hewas on e of the fir s t ranchers t o raise w heat and barley in thi s section , andh e still opera te s a large ranch 7 miles ou t of Kla math Fall s and anoth e r near Keno. The wedding o f Harr y Howard VV a nd Emma M cIlm oil was solemnized in Kla mat h Falls on Nov 14 , 1897 . She i s a native of Sutter C o , Calif, bornApr 15 , 1875 , the daugh ter of Rufus Hira m an d Eliza Bell McIlmoi l, e arlypioneers o f that county . Mr s VV arrived in Klamat h F alls in 1889 an d attendeds choo l here. Throughout the y ea rs she had take n an activ e int erest in women's organiza t ions and in a memb er o f Aloha C hapter No 61, Order of E ast ernStar. Her fath e r was born A ug 8, 1848 in So Dorche ster , Province of O ntari o, Canada , the son of John McIlm oil, w ho was bor n in Sacket s Harbo r, Canada Apr 20, 1826 . After l ivin g in Waterloo, Iow a, th e McIlmoil family st arted wes t o n May 3, 1862, in a co ver ed wagon drawn by o xen and se t tled in Sutter Co, Calif , e ngaging in farmin g and dair yin g there and at Phoenix, Ar i z. RufusMcIlmoi l marrie d in Sut ter Co May 28 1873, and h i s death occurr ed in L os Angeleso n Jul 21, 1921. Mrs McI lmo il was bor n 27 ju ly 1856 and di ed in Sutter Co onFeb 7 , 187 9.
Mr VV gives political allegiance to the Republican P a r t y a nd is aprominent member of the Masonic Lodge, th e O rd e r o f Eastern Star and the Shriners.At one time h e ser ve d a s Co unty Treasurer for Klamath Co for 6 yrs a nd inm an y way s ha s shown his deep interest in civic an d count y af fairs . H e was thefirst farmer to install a n electri cal i rrigat ion s ystem here, pumping from the K lamath Riv er b y means o f elec tricity purchased from th e Kerns Brot hers , a utilit y compan y who later sold to C opco.
