BIO: On May 15, 1830, Peter Mock caught a fox and sold the pelt for $1.00 and bought the family Bible in which he listed the first nine of his children. He was probably living in Damascus, VA at the time near his brother, Henry, Jr. Court Records at Abingdon, VA show that he was indicted for setting the woods on fire, but was acquitted by a jury. Later he became a constable and also a county road overseer in Washington County, VA; Glade Springs Township.

After four of their children were born in NC, Peter and Mollie moved to Mock's Mill, VA, later to be called Damascus. Here he built a home across the river from his brother, Henry. This location was near the Cumberland Gap, the pass to all points west. It was an ideal place for a tourist inn and a house of entertainment. The court granted him this privilege. Peter and brother, Henry, were the first to bring slaves to this part of the country. After the Civil War, Peter gave each slave an outfit and sent them out on their own. The 1850 census shows Peter Mock living next door to Michael Widener, son of John Widener. Peter's son, John Alexander married Margaret Widener. Buried source: Grubb/Mock Cemeteries, Washington Co. BIO: John Alexander was born 1816 near Mocksville, NC. He moved with his parents, Peter and Mollie, in 1821 to Mock's Mill, VA, later to be called Damascus, VA. He married Margaret Widener, daughter of Joel Widener of PA in 1834. He was a farmer and blacksmith by trade. They lived for a time on the banks of the Laurel River in Rapphannock County, VA. They then moved to NC where several Mock families lived. John Alexander and wife decided to follow the trail about 1839. The exact route is not known, but the famed "Wilderness Trail" may have guided them through the mountains to the west. No doubt they joined a caravan for travel was dangerous because of poor roads and Indians. A family great grandmother told the story this way: They started out in a covered as was the mode of travel at that time. They had two horses, a two year old colt and an older horse which had a habit of balking. The wagon was so full that the husband rode one of the horses. Sarah Margaret, four years old, rode in the wagon and held her one year old brother, Peter. The wife, Margaret, said that she and Peter walked most of the way. Peter is thought to be John Alexander's brother. They came through the Cumberland Gap and probably stopped in Damascus to visit his father and uncle. Cumberland Gap is where the great grandmother telling the story saw her first cook stove. They had always used fireplaces. They first came to Tennessee. Sullivan County has been mentioned, but early records burned with the court hoiuse. It must have been in the mountains for grandmother often said it was the most beautiful country in the world but one could starve to death there. They must have lived there for several years for the 1850 census shows four, maybe five of their children born there from 1840 to 1849. They moved on through KY to Johnson County, IN near Greenwood. Here they lived on a farm and fared better. John and Margaret moved later to Elwood, IN and bought a 50 acre farm northeast of town where they prospered. John and Margaret Mock are buried in a well kept country cemetery on a hill near Forestville, IN, which is a small village near Rigdon, IN.

BIO: The Mocks and Kinnicks were neighbors in both NC and IN. In 1795 John Kinnick bought 150 acres of land from John Mock located on the forks of the Yadkin River in NC. This means that John Mock was a resident of Rowan County, NC when John Kinnick moved from Maryland to Rowan County. They were also said to have been later in Davie County; it was set off from Rowan in 1838. Exactly when they moved to INDIANA is not known, but they lived in Clark Township in two or three locations. John Kinnick was a large man, tall and erect with darl eyes and hair. Sarah Ellen was quite small, a true blond with blue eyes and light hair, a characteristic of the Mock family. She was the mother od 13 children, was very musical and played an Italian harp. She was of a restless disposition, a great roamer, never content to live long in one place. They moved to Iowa in 1856. After he died, she remarried again and lived in Iowa until she died.

Andrew's military pension file #60126 adds the following information. Andrew W. Mock enlisted in Co. F, 5th Reg., Ind. Cav. on 20 Feb 1864 at Greenwood, IN. This would have been 2 weeks after the birth of his and Susan Catherine's third child. He was mustered in 9 MAY 1864 at Indianapolis, IN for 3 years. At the time of muster, he was paid a $60 bounty. Three months later, on 31 JUL 1864, he was listed as missing in action-taken prisoner near Macon, GA. The time and place undoubtedly means he was with Sherman on the march to the sea. At that time it was noted that he was due another $120 bounty payment. The file states that he died in Florence, SC on 6 NOV 1864. His active file was closed on 15 JUN 1865. We know from the pension file that Susan was awarded a pension based on his service and that it was stopped when she married Francis Wright. Later, after Francis' death, she would re-apply. While looking around the "internet", it was found that there was a National Cemetery in Florence, SC. I called and asked for information. I was informed that there was a confederate prison there called the Florence Stockades and that all prisoners who died there were buried in the trenches which is now a part of the National Cemetery. Other information gathered was that during and at the end of the Civil War, several National Cemeteries were established for burial and re-interment of the Union dead. Confederates were allowed burial, but not until 1906 would Congress allow stones to be placed on the confederate graves. Of course in the trench areas, it was impossible to know who was where so most of those are unmarked. Andrew and Andrew Mock were two different people, but it appears that some researcher in the past has confused the two.[bobspu.ged]
