Tradition says Francis Epes came to Virginia in the ship "Hopewell", which name he gave to his plantation on the south bank of the James River. Francis was at first an Ensign, then Captain, and later Lieutenant-Colonel of Militia. Shirley's Hundred Island is now called Eppes Island.
