I consider this a most important record, as furnis h i n g a g ood indicationas to who was the mother of Dani e l Ma lt by b . "May 19, 1679." His sisterElizabeth, was b or n Apr i l 30, 1 676; and from the fact that her firstchi l d is nam e d Rache l (and it does not appear to be a nam e i n the Hoa dl eyfamily ), I feel confident Elizabeth wa s a d aughter o f Wi lliams fi rstwife, Rachel (probably Wi lliams on). I be liev e Daniel, b . May 19, 1679,was also h er son , and tha t Rache l died at, o r near, the date of h isbirth . Six mon ths afte r the birth o f Daniel, when Wi lliam wa s probablyl eft wit h these young ch ildren, we fi nd Willia m buying a h orse o f SamuelMartin of W ethersfie ld, an d I believe it wa s abou t this time he marrie dHann ah Hosm er, widow of Josia h Willa rd of Wethersfield.

Searches in Wethersfield yeilded the following: Fe b . 1 8 , 1 661.(Wethersfield Land Rec., Vol. II., pp. 44-4 5) . "S am ue l Martin and Phoebehis wife, sold three acre s o f hom e lo t t o Josiah Willard." There isanother goo d reas on fo r figu rin g Daniel was not a son of Hannah Ho smer.I n 1889 , a grou p o f children, including myself, an d elde r sister , werepla yin g on the Old New Haven Green , by th e old Stat e House, a nd l aterwandered down amongs t the ve ry old tomb stones clos e t o Centre Church.Sudden ly a frie nd exclaimed : "Look, her e i s a Maltby." It wa s a smallgr ay slate ston e, heavy in m oss ; my sister cam e up and sai d, "Why, itstw o hundred year s ol d!" Then o n a closer ex amination, sh e said, "I waswro ng, i ts tw o hundred and te n years old. " We could make ou t "Mrs . " -and then a fair ly long name , not a short name li k e Mary , and then alas, the spellin g Maltbei (or Maltbie ) , I forge t which. We we nt home an d toldmy father an d a fe w days late r we drov e down an d I showed him the s tone.He t ook one look , wen t back to t he carriage and sa id to Mother : "Not ourfam il y, its spel t differently."

Regarding Hannah Hosmer. She married in 1657 Josiah W i l l a rd ofWethersfield. They had eight children. Josi a h Wi ll ar d died in 1674, so,insofar as dates go, it wou l d be p oss ibl e for her to have been mother ofElizabeth , b . 1676 , an d Dan iel, b. 1679.

The first four children of William Maltby were: Ja n e , b . 1 669, John, b.1670, Mary, b. 1672, and William , b . 1 67 3 . I think it is usual to findthat the younge r chi ldre n a r e born with an interval of two or threeyea rs, he nce E liza be th, three years after William, and Dan iel, th reeyea rs af te r Elizabeth. Were it not for the fa ct tha t Elizabe th nam e s hereldest child Rachel, it migh t see m that Hanna h (Hosm er ) Willard weremother of Eliza beth a nd Daniel.

Thorough research has brought me record of Hanna h a s w i f e of WilliamMaltby earlier that "27 Feb. 1685 w her e he r f at her, Thomas Hosmer ofHartford, gives to hi s "Da ughte r Ha nna h Malby # 18, which is the Reversiodu e me ou t of t he es tat e of Josiah Willard of Wethersfiel d. To my son-in- law, M alb y # 5, etc." Pr. 1 Sept. 1687 . In 1687-8 . Mar . 7. Chur chMe mbers, Branford. "Wm. Mal tby - Hanna h Maltby " and--- 1 689-9 0. No other re cord ofHannah M altby ha s be en found insofa r as I can lear n.
