General Notes (Husband)

BIO: Henry and Catherine settled on Dutchman's Creek near the west bank of the Big Yadkin River at what was called Mock's Ford. Here they lived, attended church and had their children baptized. They owned a fine home and had slaves which were treated right. They gave to their children a man and woman slave when they married. A male slave was worth about $1000.00 and a female about $1500.00. Henry was a farmer and died on the farm where he and Catherine started housekeeping. They spoke German in their home. The Old Heidelburg Lutheran Church was later called the Old Dutch Meeting House. Baptismal records are there for Frederick, Esther, Peter, Johannas, Anna and Sarah.

BIO: On May 15, 1830, Peter Mock caught a fox and sold the pelt for $1.00 and bought the family Bible in which he listed the first nine of his children. He was probably living in Damascus, VA at the time near his brother, Henry, Jr. Court Records at Abingdon, VA show that he was indicted for setting the woods on fire, but was acquitted by a jury. Later he became a constable and also a county road overseer in Washington County, VA; Glade Springs Township.
After four of their children were born in NC, Peter and Mollie moved to Mock's Mill, VA, later to be called Damascus. Here he built a home across the river from his brother, Henry. This location was near the Cumberland Gap, the pass to all points west. It was an ideal place for a tourist inn and a house of entertainment. The court granted him this privilege. Peter and brother, Henry, were the first to bring slaves to this part of the country. After the Civil War, Peter gave each slave an outfit and sent them out on their own. The 1850 census shows Peter Mock living next door to Michael Widener, son of John Widener. Peter's son, John Alexander married Margaret Widener. Buried source: Grubb/Mock Cemeteries, Washington Co. Individual note: BIO: In the spring of 1821, Henry and Nancy, inspired by the adventures of a neighbor, Daniel Boone, started on the long trek to Tennessee and Kentucky. They stopped off at the water gap, known now as Damascus. This was a small settlement in the wilderness. It was at the confluence of Beaverdam Creek and the Laurel Fork of the Holston, two beautiful rivers. The country was very heavily wooded and the proximity to the rivers so impressed him that he decided to go no farther. He bought land and built a log home west of the village. In 1823, he bought 154 acres that is now the main part of town. For 63 years he owned a good part of the town. In the early records is a court order for 12 men to view the land of Henry Mock on both sides of Laurel Ford of the Holston River, before building a dam and erecting a water powered grist mill. He was granted the right to build both. Later he added a saw mill. At first, the town was known as Mock's Mill. In 1886, when Henry sold most of his land, it was renamed Damascus for the Bibical town where two rivers meet. In politics he was a conservative, voting republican, although in later years his son, Peter, died in the confederacy. In his early life he was a Lutheran and was baptized in the Heidelburg Lutheran Church in Rowan County, NC. After coming to VA, he united with the Mathodists at Wright's Chapel in Damascus. Damascus was a gap in the mountains through which travelers passed going west. His home was often a stopping place for them. Also, his brother, Peter, had an inn in the immediate area. Cumberland Gap was a short distance away toward Tennessee. He had three wives and thirty children. (two wives and his children are not available in this report). Many of his descendents still live in the area. He is buried in the Mock Cemetery there as is his brother, Peter. Col. J. D. Imboden, one of the first citizens of Damascus, at Henry's death wrote the following for the "Abingdon Virginian". "He was born in Surry County, NC. He migrated to this area when he was 27 years old. This area was then an almost impenetrable jungle, the bottom land along the rivers was just as Daniel Boone found it in 1759 on his first trip west. It was a dense forest of enormous hemlock, popular and whie oak trees, cutting all sunshine from the ground that was naturally wet from the numerous springs whose waters were dammed up by fallen timber, roots, rocks, and leaves. The Laurel and Rhododendron were so thick that a dog could barely penetrate the jungle. Mr. Mock was struck by the natural beauty and future advantages of the locality and decided to locate here. He built a dam across the Laurel and put up a grist mill and a saw mill on its banks; then tackled the forest and jungle around them. His first wife died leaving him a family of small children. He married another good woman and his family continued to increase until she died. He married again a wife who survives him after bearing him nine more children. He reared a highly respectable family and not a scurvy sheep in the flock. He had a sense of humor and once when asked about his family remarked that his wife knew all their names. The children married and had families until now it is said that most everyone in Damascus is related. .....The story continues with all the things that happened in his lifetime. He lived under every president from Washington to...... Napoleon was only 25 when Henry was born Our western land belonged to other countries; France, England and Spain When he was 13, the steamboat was invented ....War of 1812...Louisiana Purchase...Aaron Burr tried for Treason... Mexican War...First steamer crossing of the Atlantic...Locomotive invented...Civil War...matches were invented...Louis and Clark expedition...telegraph invented...etc., etc."

Will of Henry Mock, Jr...copy owned by compiler. ********************************* Henry's will (copy on file) was written on 28 MAY 1887 and signed with "his mark". Interestingly, it named as heirs only children of his third wife, Mary K.Mock. The will was probated in Washington County, VA court on 23 MAY 1898.
