General Notes for Child William Black
Name: William BLACK 1 Sex: M Birth: 1761 in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, Ulster, N. Ireland Death: 14 FEB 1844 in his farm home east of Bremen, Fairfield Co. OH Immigration: 1790 Immigrated from Ireland to Mifflin Co. PA Event: Relocation 1811 Moved to Ohio NATI: Scotch-Irish Reference Number: 72 Note: In 1790, with Ireland on the brink of yet another disastrous rebellion, William Black (1761-1844), a stone mason, and Mary Wiley Black (1760-1856) and four of their five children sailed to find their place in the New World. They came to America on a slow-sailing vessel, and were eleven weeks on the ocean. The drinking water ran short, and each family was allotted only a small portion. Mary Wiley Black said her family could have drunk up all of their share before breakfast, if she had permitted them to do so. In order to get water they hung up sheets when it rained then wrung them out into drinking vessels. William and Mary Black landed, in 1790, at Philadelphia, and pushed on to Union township, Mifflin County, PA, near Reedsville, where they were members of the Presbyterian Church, then called the East Kishacoquillas Congregation, now the Reedsville Presbyterian Church. William, a stone mason, and family, lived in Mifflin county, Pennsylvania, for the first twenty years after they came to America. In 1811 they came to Ohio, and settled in Fairfield county, (now Perry county, Jackson township, southwest quarter of section No. 19.) Here they made their home until the death of William Black in 1844. They were members of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, and are both buried in the cemetery nearby. Mary Wiley Black died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Robert McCandlish, in Rushcreek township, Fairfield Co.County records show that William Black paid Perry County taxes in 1819 and Probate Court records March 20, 1852 transfer of property belonging to William Black for $1200. Administrator of estate Samual I(Curry?) Black and Robert J. (John) Black. Per telephone conversation with clerk of court 3/22/1998. General Notes (Husband)
Name: William BLACK , Jr Sex: M Birth: MAY 1788 in Ballymoney, Anterim, Ulster, N. Ireland Death: 27 JUL 1866 in Bremen, Fairfield Co. OH Emigration: 1836 Joined family in OH with own wife and children Event: Relocation 1790 Left in Ireland with Aunts - sick Whooping Cough Event: Records 1850 Listed 1850 OH Census p 425 or 416 Rush Creek Twp. Reference Number: 292 Note: William, Jr. and Jane decided to come to America to join his parents and family, who had come in 1790. At the time of the 1790 sailing, William Black, Jr. was a baby two years of age, and so ill with whooping cough that the doctor said there was no chance of his recovery. His mother, feeling that she could not bear to see her baby buried at sea, left him with her maiden sisters Jennie and Nancy Wiley, in Ireland. He recovered, and brought his Aunt Nancy Wiley with his family when they came to America. They sailed from Port Rush near the Giant's Causeway, on the north coast of Ireland, on "Orange Day," July 12th, 1836, arriving at Liverpool the next morning. They came to America on "The Dunkin Gibb," a sailing vessel which was delayed six weeks at Liverpool, waiting for passengers enough to make a paying trip to America. They were on the water 90 days, and when they reached the mouth of the St Lawrence River navigation was closed for the winter. They traveled by wagons to Buffalo, NY, passing around Niagara Falls near the location of Brock's monument. The trip was too much for Nancy Wiley, the aunt, and she passed away and was buried at Prescot, Canada. The family spent the winter in Buffalo, and when Spring came, they resumed their journey by way of canal, to Lancaster, Ohio.A Mr. Stemen, who lived where the Fairview schoolhouse now stands, east of Bremen, brought them in his wagon from Lancaster, to the home of William Black, east of Bremen. William Jr. and Jane Black spent their remaining days on this farm, which William Black (1) bought when he came from Pennsylvania, in 1811.William Black, Jr. served an apprenticeship while in Ireland, at the weaver's trade, learning the method of manufacturing fine Irish linen. In the United States, he followed the occupation of farming. He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church (sometimes called "Old Bethel") and is buried in that cemetery.
