General Notes (Husband)
George BLACKALL {30214}
address: Killard, Clare, Ireland
!listed in Co. of Clare: List of Freeholders for the year 1821'
!10 OCT 1782 is the date of his marriage settlement in BLACKALL pedigree of Sir H W B BLACKALL; 16 OCT 1782 is the date given in the BURNELL pedigree (Irish Genealogist, IV, 2, p.77). The settlement was registered 20 NOV 1782, Bk. 344, p.578, no. 234042.
!Although a Protestant, he conformed 9 NOV 1776 as his mother was a Roman Catholic and it was held in Clarke v. Parsons Smith & ors. (Exch. 23 NOV 1754) that a person born of one Popish parent was deemed to be a Papist unless he conformed. This case was reported in Gorges Howard's Cases on the laws against the growth of Popery', published 1775, and in the following year Protestant George enrolled as a convert (a date a year earlier is given in Sir H W B BLACKALL's pedigree of the BLACKALLs). This Gilbertian conversion was doubtless effected as a safeguard against Protestant Discoverers', who might otherwise have deprived him of his property.
General Notes (Wife)
Marcella (Margery) BURNELL {30222}
Sir H W B BLACKALL in different places describes her as child of Christopher BURNELL-4329 (of Ranaghan, Co. Clare) and Mary BUTLER-4330 or of Henry BURNELL and Mary D'ARCY; the former seems unlikely, given the dates or Mary BUTLER's 2 marriages in Burke's Irish Family Records. Situation may be clarified by consulting The Burnells and the Penal Laws' in Ir. Geneal. vol. 4, no. 2, 1969; and also Blake Butler in Burke's L.G.I. 1958, which may differ from the 1976 version. Final sources are Butler and McNamara of Ayle in Burke, 1976.
!Marcella's half-brother (son of Christopher), Henry BURNELL m. Barbara, dau. of Patrick FITZGIBBON, uncle of 1st Earl of Clare.
!her sister Elizabeth-4331 married her brother-in-law Charles BLACKALL M.D. as early as 1772. This is inconsistent with their parents having married as late as JAN 1763.
General Notes for Child Henry Blackall
Henry BLACKALL {30223}
all four children attributed here to Henry BLACKALL and Mary KEANE are based on pure speculation: 1. Thomas was definitely a descendant, but may have been a grandson 2. Henry is listed in Griffith's Valuation as living in Kildeema, but may not be a descendant 3. Marcella appears in the Kilkee Parish Records, and is included on the basis of the Marcella theory'. She could be a granddaughter, or not a descendant. 4. Michael and his descendants don't fit in anywhere else.
!of Kildeema, Co. Clare jure uxoris'; evidently moved there on inheriting the KEANE property leaving his brother John McMahon BLACKALL to inherit the family property in and around Killard.
!some information suggests that there may have been a Thomas and/or a George in this family who may have been ancestor to some of the descendants attributed here to Henry
!appears in Co. of Clare: List of Freeholders for the year 1821' with an abode in Killard, and also as landlord over Michael SEXTON in Killard; John and H BLACKALL' are landlords over their brother-in-law Hugh CLANCY-126 in Killard and also over Matthew and Michael GORMAN, Thomas, Michael and John KEAN, and James and Patrick KELLY and John NORMOYLE and Thomas O'BRIEN and John SHAUGHNESSY in Killard; John M'Mahon BLACKALL in his own right is landlord over John and Michael HAUGH, Michael and Thomas HOULIHAN and Andrew HONAN and William and Denis McINERHENY and Patrick NIHILL and Michael SHEA in Killard; their father George BLACKALL is still landlord over Michael KELLY in Killard.
!according to Sir Hal's pedigree, this is Henry, a quo Thomas Henry of Land Commission and Booterstown. The dates (Henry born AFT 1782, Thomas Henry's siblings born ABT 1855) make it just possible that a quo' means
great-grandfather of'. According to Thomas Henry's daughters, Thomas Henry was son of Thomas son of Thomas Keane. Thomas Keane BLACKALL would then be son of this Henry BLACKALL.
!However, there is contradictory evidence in notes by Ciss McNAMARA-7:
!Q: What was name of the father of these 4 men (Henry, George, Michael and Patrick (actually Thomas) CLANCY-70,157,158,159) and their mother's name? Had they a sister who married George BLACKHALL (sic)? (Actually, no evidence of a sister has been found.) Whose son was Tom [Thomas Henry] BLACKHALL late Land Commission, father of Eileen, etc, Booterstown?'
!A: Their father's name was George [actually Hugh] and he married Catherine [probably Marcella] BLACKALL, sister of George BLACKALL [actually this Henry] who was father of Tom BLACKALL or grandfather [possibly great-grandfather]'
!Jim GRIFFIN adds further to the confusion. He calls this person Thomas H BLACKALL. Sir Hal and Burke each give a date of death, so the name is almost certainly correct. Jim GRIFFIN makes this person father of both Thomas Henry [Thomas-4621] who married Jane PILKINGTON and Thomas Michael [Michael-5447] who married Margaret HOGAN. For the moment, it is assumed here that these relationships are correct, but that the names are wrong. Jim may have misinterpreted names in brackets in Griffith's Valuation as middle names rather than fathers' names.
!An alternative theory is that Michael-5447 is a son of this Henry-4302, but that Thomas-4621 is a grandson of this Henry-4302, possibly even a son of Michael-5447. This alternative theory is supported by the fact that Margaret HOGAN's children were born between 1836 and 1845, but Jane PILKINGTON's children were not born until 1855-1878, so could well be Margaret HOGAN's grandchildren. Someone like Michael CARMODY or Rose BLACKALL might be able to clarify this further.
!d.v.p.
General Notes for Child John Macmahon Blackall
address: Killard; his second marriage was childless. Burke's and tombstone give death date as 3 JAN 1862; 13 JAN must be wrong. listed in Tithe Applotment book of 1825 in Killard
General Notes for Child Marcella Blackall
Marcella BLACKALL (30225}
surname spelt Blackall or Blackhall? first name Catherine or Marcella or even Marsella?
!evidence for Catherine (and for perpetuation of this possible error): 1. Letter 28 Mar 1945 from Cissie O'NEILL-344 to Ciss WALDRON-7:
Pappy [Michael CLANCY-103, then aged at least 85] is getting rather absent-minded [...] his father's mother was Catherine BLACKALL' 2. MS Abt 1956 by Ciss WALDRON-7 quoted in notes for Henry-4302
!evidence for Marcella/Marsella: 1. Sir Hal BLACKALL-2658 gives Catherine's husband as KEANE 2. Catherine did not ring a bell with Mary Sean Nora KELLY who knew a lot about Hugh CLANCY's wife
!3. Co. of Clare List of Freeholders, for the year 1821' includes the following No. 112 Name of Freeholder: Hugh CLANCY Place of Abode: Killard Situation of Freehold: Killard and Cahirlane Name of Landlord: John and H. BLACKALL Val. - (i.e. 40 shillings?) Name of lives or other tenure: Marsella BLACKALL otherwise CLANCY Date of registry: February 24, 1818
! County of Clare List of Freeholders, for the year 1829' includes the following: No. 14 Name of Freeholder: Hugh CLANCHY Place of Abode: Killard Situation of Freehold: Killard [only] Val: 10 [pounds] Place and Date of Registry: Kilrush, 2d July 1829.
!4. Almost every family descended from George BLACKALL and Marcella BURNELL includes a Marcella, so their own family must. 5. Her Christian name is not given in 19 Aug 1930 MS referred to in notes for Catherine-4303. 6. Tom BLACKALL-4309 told John KENNY-6721 on 22 Jul 1982 that another [unnamed] BLACKALL girl married to Tom [i.e. Hugh] CLANCY and he was living in Killard.'
General Notes for Child Catherine Blackall
Catherine BLACKALL (30226)
The Blackall Family of Limerick, Dublin and Clare' indicates that Catherine sister of old John BLACKALL-2642, the Killard landlord, married Owen KEANE. It was long thought that the wife of Hugh CLANCY-126 (not listed in the afore-mentioned publication) was also called Catherine. Mary Sean Nora KELLY is quite emphatic that she was a sister of old John BLACKALL and an aunt of George BLACKALL-2647, who had 2 families (one a side-branch'). The DEVINEs also say that Massie BLACKALL-2656 and Georgie Mickie CLANCY-456 were second cousins, which would require the former's grandfather John BLACKALL-2642 and the latter's grandmother Marcella BLACKALL-127 to be brother and sister. Bob GREENE stated emphatically (20 Apr 1992) that two BLACKALL sisters married KEANE of Baltard and BLACKALL of Killard, but did not know which was really called Catherine. John KENNY stated (17 Nov 1992) that the sister who married KEANE and the sister who married MULVIHILL were really the same person and that she was widowed and remarried.
!could this Catherine have been a daughter of Charles BLACKALL and Elizabeth BURNELL? Seems most unlikely.
!cf. handwritten notes on envelope post-marked Lios Daoin Inis 19 Aug [19]30' from Delia BRADLEY-339 to Ciss WALDRON-7: (in Ciss WALDRON's handwriting):
! First cousin married HEHIR George [i.e. Hugh] CLANCY greatgrandfather BLACKHALL[-127] greatgrandmother KEANEs Kilkee [?Kilbaha,?Kildimo] 2nd cousins to my mother [Mary Anne CLANCY] sister BLACKHALL[-4303?] Mrs KEANE Baltard'
!Griffith's Valuation (union of Kilrush, p.31) lists Charles KEANE as occupier in 1855 of a house, offices and lands totalling 111a 0r 15p in the townland of Ballard. The house was on a holding of 80a 3r 15p adjacent to Donegal Point. It appears that this Charles KEANE must have been the only son of Charles (Owen?) KEANE and Catherine BLACKALL-4303. There are other or the same Charles KEANEs in Ballard in the 1825 Tithe Applotment Book and the 1901 census. The various sets of KEANE cousins in Baltard, Kilkee and elsewhere descended from KEANE-4635 and BLACKALL-4303 include the following from 1901 census: Thomas KEANE (50) and Susan (46) had children Marcella (23), Charles (21), John (19), Jane (17), Delia (14), Michael (13), Kate (12) and Austin (4). (The inscription on this family's grave in Killard is: Erected by Thomas KEANE of Baltard in memory of his wife Susan (alias McINERNEY) died 26th Jan 1915 aged 57 years. Catherine KEANE died 22 June 1946 aged 53 years. Her husband Charles died 13 May 1954 aged 76 years.') Charles KEANE (70), probably uncle of preceding Thomas, and Margaret (66) had son Martin (30) and daughter Lizzie (28). (Charles KEANE of Baltard erected a tombstone in Killard to his son Martin who died 2 Mar 1906 aged 35.)

Henry BLACKALL {30223}
all four children attributed here to Henry BLACKALL and Mary KEANE are based on pure speculation: 1.

General Notes for Child Thomas Blackall
of Kildimo, Co. Clare his wife was a Protestant.middle name was Henry, according to Jim GRIFFIN, who seems to have interpreted the description of a landholder in Lisgurreen in Griffith's Valuation as Thomas BLACKALL (Henry) wrongly; he also gives additional children George and Henry who do not appear in the index to the Kilkee baptismal register.
General Notes for Child Henry Blackall
Henry BLACKALL is listed as occupying a house in Kildeema in Griffith's Valuation. I have assumed for the moment that he was a son of Henry BLACKALL of Kildeema who died in 1830.
General Notes for Child Michael Of Dough Blackall
Michael of Dough BLACKALL {30230}
The descendants of Margaret HOGAN-5636 and Jane PELKINGTON-4622 as given here are fairly reliable. There some reason to suspect that both of their husbands were descended from Henry BLACKALL-4302 and Mary KEANE-4620, whose existence cannot be questioned given all that Sir Hal BLACKALL-2658 says about them. On the other hand, the absence of a single Marcella among the descendants of Michael BLACKALL-5447 and Margaret HOGAN-5636 suggests that Michael BLACKALL is not even descended from George BLACKALL-4294 and Marcella BURNELL-4301. Everything else is the product of speculation and a multitude of contradictory evidence.
!Rose BLACKALL describes her great-grandfather as Thomas Keane BLACKALL and does not name his wife. Jim GRIFFIN describes Margaret HOGAN's husband as Thomas Michael BLACKALL and identifies him with the Thomas (Michael) BLACKALL in Kildeema (or Lisgurreen?) in Griffith's Valuation.
!Thomas BLACKALL (Michael) from Griffith's Valuation is included as this man's son without any solid evidence.
General Notes for Child Marcella Blackall
Marcella BLACKALL {30231}
I have assumed, by the Marcella theory, that Mrs John PELKINGTON must have been a daughter of Henry BLACKALL of Kildeema, since she seems too old to be a great-grand-daughter of George BLACKALL and Marcella BURNELL. There appears to have been a double match between the son and daughter of Henry BLACKALL of Kildeema and two PELKINGTONs, probably both from Tarmon, where this Marcella resided when her daughter Marcella was born.

Godmother to one of Fred KELLY-803's children (Raymond). The BLACKALL sisters are aware that their father was related to (a cousin of) Mrs KEOGH-105 this is why Irene was Raymond's godmother; according to my conjectures here, Thomas Henry BLACKALL J.P. and Mrs. KEOGH were second cousins once removed. His daughters still (OCT 1989) live at the family residence, Marino Park', of Hyde Park Gardens, off Hyde Park Avenue, off Mount Merrion Avenue in Blackrock , co. Dublin.

General Notes (Husband)
John BLACKALL {30260}
This is almost certainly two different people. Kathleen CARMODY-5659 believes (30 Mar 1991) that her grandfather, John BLACKALL, was born on the BLACKALL farm in Lisgurreen (off the main Kilrush-Kilkee Road); that his father married in there and was probably a son of Henry BLACKALL-4302 of Kildeema; and that he later bought the other BLACKALL farm in Lisdeen (on the main road). The Lisgurreen farm was inherited by his sons George and Michael and the Lisdeen farm by his son Patrick and daughter Katherine. None of these four married and the three sons are buried together in a vault in Cill tSeanain graveyard. The Lisgurreen farm may originally have been WILLIAMSes. A sister of Kathleen's grandfather (Anne BLACKALL) married GARRY and may have been mother of the Fr. GARRY mentioned in Eddie LENIHAN's history of the West Clare Railway.
