When Mike Lucas was a baby he had trouble pronouncing Gra n d ma or Grandpa so he called his granparents Ma and Papp y a n d it stuck. All family and children called them that.
Pappy and Clara both had wavy strawberry blond hair. Ka t e B artelmes has strawberry blond hair and her two childr en , Ar iel and Blair, have flaming red hair and auburn eye s . Every one else in the family had brown hair as adults . Pa ppy wa s only 5' 6" tall. Clara died in the 1918 flu epidemic.
According to family tales, Pappy ran away from home at th i r teen years old. The family had a plantation in Kentuck y b lu egrass country . He stayed with a black gentleman wh o tr ain ed horses for the Kentucky Derby for a while and w as tr aine d to be a jockey . Joy Piles says he once rode in the Kentucky Der b y . There are family pictures showing Pappy as a young ch i l d with his black ÒmammyÓ.

Ma talked about how difficult it was for a widow wit h f i v e children to survive. She told me they all had t o wor k a s soon as they could. She told me about takin g a job a s a h ousecleaner in a hotel and finding out it w as a hous e of Òi ll reputeÓ. She said that she knotted sheets and climbed out a window a n d r an away.
She was an exceptionally beautiful young woman, tall, wil l o wy with a waist so tiny you could put your two hands a l l th e way around. She had dark brown eyes and dark brow n h air . She told me she was the ugly duckling of the sist er s an d that her sister Maggie was once a Miss Montana Ñ K. Bartelmes
When Ma was married to Pappy, he weighed 115 lbs. and w a s 2 3. Ma was 20 and weighed 90 lbs. Note Ñ Ma was 5'9 " tal l! P appy was 5'6" tall.
They travelled a lot to Idaho, Oregon, Vancouver, Canad a , C aifornia, Utah, Montana back to Spokane where Joy wa s b orn . They returned to Seattle when Joy was 4 months ol d.
