General Notes (Husband)
"When he was 23 he went west and during the bloody riots in Kansas, when Albert Sidney Johnston was ordered to that state to quell the disturbances, he joined the army and was promoted for bravery." "After the riots were over he went farther west and settled in the Rockies where he passed an eventful life. According to Mrs. Hattie Choice Schroder of Greenville, South Carolina, a direct descendant of General John Blassingame, there was gossip that he had an Indian wife while living in the west." "When South Carolina seceded in December 1860, he rode all the way from Pike's Peak, a distance of 2000 miles on horseback, and upon arrival there enlisted in the Confederate army on 13 April 1861 at Spartanburg and was mustered into service on 4 June 1861 at Orangeburgh by Lieutenant Colonel Barnard E. Bee. He served as fifth corporal in First Company K (Spartan Rifles), 5th South Carolin Infantry, being promoted to second sergeant. Later he served on Company K (Captain Joseph Walker), Palmetto Sharpshooters, Jenkins Regiment (South Carolina), rising form second Lieutenant to Captain. He is referred to in 'War of the Rebellion, Official Records of the union and Confederate Armies' in Series I, Volume II, page 543, as Sergeant Blassingame, the date being 22 July 1861 and referring to an action at McLean's Ford." "According to Mrs. Schroder, he married Elizabeth Smith, of Columbia, South Carolina, but they had no children so they adopted her niece and named her Lallibess, or 'Lal'. Mrs. Wynn in 'Southern Lineages' says he married Elizabeth ('Bettie') Hayne, but it is believed this is an error. According to the 1880 census of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, his mother-in-law was Mary Abrams, born North Carolina." "During the War he was dangerously wounded while fighting in Virgina, but recovered and returned to serve with distinguished gallantry until the end of the War." "Mrs. Schroder says that Captain John Hayne Blassingame definitely visited the ancestral home in France and that all the cousins in Spartanburg know this to be a fact." "After the War he was elected Sheriff of his native county, but under the Reconstruction measures of Congress, having served as a Captain in the Confederate Army, he had to resign before the end of his term. After the Reconstruction days had passed he was elected County Treasurer by a large majority. This was in 1877, and two years later he was re-elected and the following year was again chosen Sheriff. After serving one term he retired from public life." "On 16 August 1896 while guarding the home of a relative and neighbour during their absence, he was shot down in cold blood by a colored burglar, who narrowly escaped being lynched." "(Reference: History of Spartanburg County, Dr. J.B.O. Landrum, published 1900; a picture of Captain Blassingame accompanies the article.)"
