General Notes (Husband)
[bonnie arnold's dodson gedcom.ged]
Jacob Block was the son of Marcus and Bash Block, natives of Russia-Poland. At the age of 14 Jacob J., left his father's home and went to England, and followed the painter's and glazier's trade. He left England in 1869 on board the steaqmship Moravia, of the Cunnard line, and landed in America, July 1st 1869: he worked on a farm for a short while after landing in this country, but soon managed to save enough to buy himself enough notions to fill his "pack", and commenced peddling through the country. In June, 1871, he went to Denver and clerked for his brother, Simon Block, for three years. he was afterwards a partner of Charles Baldwin's, in the mercantile business in Denver, Col. He came to Carroll County, Missouri and married Mrs Mary Frances (Suggs) Dodson, widow of Robert Dodson, in August 1875. Mrs Dodson had 2 children when he married her and they were Elizabeth U. and John W. Dodson. 3 children were born to Mary F. and Jacob Block, Samuel J., Ida and Eva.
Jacob Block had a brother named Moses Mitchell Block, who was born October 3, 1850 in Russia. Moses left home when he was 15 and went to Paris, France, where he obtained a clerkship. In 1866 he started on board a vessel from Mavre for America and landed in this country the 15th day of April. He came west to illinois, stopped at LaHarpe a short time, and then went to Quincey and fitted out a "pack" of notions and peddled them through the state. He continued peddling in the state of Illinois and Missouri until 1867, when he visited Denver, and returned to Missouri in 1870, and located in Mandeville, Missouri. Here he and his brother, Wolf Block, were engaged in the dry goods business,. in 1874 he opened a store frive and 1/2 miles south-west of Mandeville, at a place called "Cross Lanes".
The year following he sold out his stock of goods to his brother, and went in his brother's store as clerk. In 1875 he went to Philadelphia and attended a course of lectures at the Jefferson Medical College. In 1876 he opened a drug store in Mandeville, Carroll Co., Missouri and is still engaged in business there. He was married to Miss Mary A. Harford May 4 1881; her parents are natives of kentucky. Mr Block was made a mason in 1874, and has filled various positions in the lodge; he is also a member of the Independent Order of Good Templars.

this is an email I received from Mark Rozenholtz on May 13, 2001
Hi Bonnie,
The Block tree seems to be taking root. A lot of the 'ground' work you started with your 'Jacob BLOCK' posting through ancestry.com, which I eventually got to see.
Anyway, I think I have found a nexus for Samuel T. BLOCK & Mary E. BLOCK (your gravestone photos for the same) at Street Cemetery with Mitchell & Anna BLOCK at Smith Cemetery (your photos too).
Let me give you some BLOCK info, which I may not have given you in detail before
In early 2001, I spoke with an Alan BLOCK, who now lives in Beloit, WI. He is the son of Alvin ("Sonny") BLOCK (11/11/28-7/19/92). Alvin's parents are August A. BLOCK & Maude E. Vaugnh (you shared the photos of their gravestones from Street Cemetery).
August's parents, per a phone conversation with Alan earlier this year, are:
Samuel Tilden & Mary BLOCK (maiden name is not known) - again you provided photos of their gravestones at Street Cemetery.
Samuel's father was Jacob! I think this "Jacob" is indeed Mitchell's, Wolf's, and my g-gf Samuel's brother! Wow, if so, we've connected the BLOCK's at two Carroll County cemeteries - such a small world we live in (or buried near!).
From your excellent digging/researching & photos of gravestones, we know about how the SHIRLEY family (and especially "Ida Block Shirley") is related to 'our' BLOCK's.
Possibly your Aunt knows of this "Sonny" BLOCK family [the children are: Alan (my phone contact) Sheree, Laurie, and Carrie]. These names I found from a (paid) search at www.ancestry.com, which had obituary (newspaper) notices for Alvin and Ida.
More to come on this link for sure.
