Jonathan and Leoma "Omie" first settled on Jonathan's Creek inHaywoodCounty, then a part of Buncombe County. Family tradition isthat thecreek is names after him. Moved to Cherokee County in 1829andacquired a large boundary of land near Marble from the State ofNC.This land has later had several marble quarries and three talcmines,and the finishing plant of the Columbia Marble Co. located onit.Reared in Valley Township, Cherokee County, NC. - CherokeeCountyHeritage.

Served in the NC Mounted Militia during the Cherokee Indianremoval.The trip there and back took him three years. He and hisbrother,John A. joined the Confederacy. Later a captain in theConfederateArmy. Reported as well educated, he spoke the Cherokeelanguage andmined gold.
