General Notes (Husband)

[BeamandWilson.FTW]

Quoted from Emigrants, Refugees & Prisoners, Vol III, by Richard Warren Davis

"Mennonites from Lancaster County and Montgomery County began to arrive in the Shenandoah Val ley in Virginia in the early 1730's. The FUNK family , Martin KAUFMAN, Abraham County, Vall ey. Their numbers grew and by 1758, there were at least 39 Mennonite families living in wha t is now Page and Shenandoah Counties. However, because of the constant Indian raids along t he settlements, almost all of the entire group of Mennonites abandoned their homes and return ed to Pennsylvania for safety by September 1758.

In September of 1758, at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a letter was written by Benedict HIRSCHE fi nancial help from the Mennonites in Holland. He wrote that one family had been murdered by t he Indians and the others had to flee to Lancaster, totaling 39 families. The signers of th e letter were Daniel STAUFFER, Michael KAUFMAN, Jacob BOERNER and Samuel BOEHM. Martin FUNK , who was the minister and elder of the Virginia Mennonites left Lancaster with Johannes SCHN YDER in September of 1758 and arrived in Holland by December, 1758.

I have tried to determine which 39 Mennonite families were living in the Shenandoah Valley i n 1758. From my research of these families, I have put together a reconstructed census lis t for the year 1750. I have used the year 1750, because there were a number of land transact ions and land warrants granted to Mennonites previous to this year as well as a number of roa d petitions signed by the men of the group. I have found 39 families which were there in 175 0. Two single men, Abraham BRUBAKER and Christian GROVE may have been living there in 1750 a lso. Abraham BRUBAKER'S father, John owned a tract of land in Virginia which he gave to Abra ham, who married in Virginia in about 1756. Christian GROVE was married in about 1755, and w as living in Virginia in 1758, and possibly in 1750.

Anthony KNIESSLY and Jacob BEYER were living in the valley in 1750 and may have been associat ed with the Mennonites in earlier times in Pennsylvania, but I could not confirm that they we re associated with them in Virginia.

Some of these Virginia refugees can be found in the 1758 tax lists for Lancaster County. Dan iel STAUFFER was living in Warwick Township, Ulrich GRABILL in Elizabeth Township, Michael KA UFMAN in Manor Township or Hempfield Township (he stayed in Lancaster County until at least 1 765 before returning to Virginia), Jacob HALDEMAN was living at Lancaster Town (he stayed in Lancaster where he died in 1764.)

The HALDELMAN family may have been the Mennonite family murdered in Virginia as reported in S eptember 1758 at Lancaster. According to a KNEISELY family Bible, Christina (KNEISELY) HALDE MAN died in August 1758 in Virginia. On 22 September 1758, at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, her h usband Christian HALDEMAN had his letters of administration issued, which would indicate tha t he died shortly before, possibly in Virginia. Three of their grandsons, Jacob HALDEMAN, Christian HALDEMAN and Gabriel HALDEMAN, all sons of Jacob HALDEMAN, were capture d by the Indians in 1758. Gabriel, the youngest died in captivity in the winter of 1758-1759 , while Jacob, the oldest was able to make his escape sometime before 1762. Christian was re leased by the Indians at Lancaster Town, Pennsylvania on 13 August 1762.

Most of the group returned to Virginia within a year or two, although a few stayed in Lancast er County. Indian raids continued, and in August, 1764, the minister John ROADS was killed w ith his wife Catherine and six of his 13 children. Their son Michael was taken captive and w as held for a number of years.

I am a decendant of Samuel Boehm. The history of the Boehm family is well documented by Danie l Bly. Was probably born in Germany about 1715. Samuel arrived in Philadelphia Oct 27, 1738 aboard t he ship St Andrew. Later lived in St. Mark's Parish, Orange (now Page) county VA, as early a s June 25 1740, when bought 200 acres on Hawksbill Creek from Joseph Stoneman of Lancaster Co unty PA for 20 pounds. He received a 170 acre grant adjoining his land from Lord Fairfax on M arch 26 1752, and sold 70 acres of it to Peter Ruffner on June 1 1762. Meanwhile in the summe r of 1758 Samuel Boehm and his family were among those who fled back to PA due to Indian atta cks in Virginia and he was one of the signers of the letter by the Virginia Mennonites to Hol land requesting help. He sold the remaining 100 acres of the grant and 160 acres of the lan d he aquired from Stoneman to John Hershberger for 450 pounds on July 31, 1769. Boehm voted for George Washington for the Virginia House of Burgresses in July 1758 and on Se pt 7 1758 he signed a letter to the Mennonites in Holland asking for help, stating that sever al Virginia Mennonite families had to flee to Lancaster PA because of Indian raids in Virgini a. Samuel Boehm bought 300 acres on the South Fork of Mulberry Run in Fredrick (now Shenandoah ) County VA, on August 2 1768, from Samuel Blackburn for 400 pounds and sold it to John Lockm iller on May 21 1782. On May 26 1778 he sold 21 1/2 acres to John Musselman. In 1782 he owne d 565 acres of land in Shenandoah County VA. On Aug 2 1785 Boehm, as executor of Valentine Lockmiller, received a deed from John Wessant . On May 24 1785 , he sold 106 acres on the South Fork of Mulberry Run and 38 1/2 acres on Ce dar Creek to his son Jacob Boehm and 198 acres to his son Reuben Boehm. On December 30 179 3 , he sold seven acres on Mulberry Run to Thomas Newell for 48.12 pounds. He also served a s guardian of Joseph Bowman, an orphan of Christian Bowman. Sameul Boehm made his made his will on June 8, 1795, dividing his propery among his wife, Eli zabeth, and his children. The estate was probated on June 13 1797.

The powers of attorney were given (over a thirteen year period, 1801-1814) by various member s of the Hestand clan to Joel Moore. Abraham Hestand (patriarch of the Hestand clan) had mar ried Magdalene Boehm in Shenandoah Co, VA, around 1760 and her father had died in 1797, leavi ng a lot of land in the Front Royal area in Shenandoah Co. The Boehm sons apparently decide d to forget about their relatives who had migrated to Monroe Co and to split up the land amongst themselves. Joel Moore (whose wife was Regina Hestand, Abraham's da ughter) had family near Front Royal and several times traveled to the area armed with power s of attorney permittinghim to act on the Hestand's behalf to try to secure their share of th e estate of Samuel Boehm. I don't know how it all finally turned out,but the powers of attorn ey are interesting and carry some genealogical information. They are copied below. ============================================================ Abraham Hestand to Joel Moore P of A June 23 1801 Barren County, Kentucky Deeds, Vol. A 1799-1809 Book A Page 42 Mormon FHL Film 0209719

This is all I have about Indian massachres in Virginia. You will be surprised to learn tha t most of the Indian attacks in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, etc. were supported by eith er the French or the British headquartered in Fort Detroit and sometimes Montreal. Therefore , to find relatives who disappeared in those early days in the south, you might want to chec k genealogy records for early Michigan, which was part of Quebec, Canada, New France 1760-178 3. It was a British colony before and after that . In 1787 it was the NW Territory. Michig an did not get an identity of its own until 1805.

1. From http://members.tripod.com (then add this address - ~ajobebrown/AtnipVA to get "She nandoah Valley Strasburg Families"):

"This 'peace' was soon to come to an abrupt end. Keister, on page 15 ["Strasburg, Virginia a nd The Keister Family" 1972] goes on to say, 'On July 17th 1763, the uneasy peace came to a s udden end. Sangemeister's diary reports a surprise attack by the Indians.' The years 1763-1 764 brought the constant threat of Indian attacks. Several of the settlers were captured o r killed by these 'Wild Men'. "

2. From "History of Detroit & Wayne Co. & Early Michigan" by Silas Farmer, 1890, Republis hed by Gale Research Co., Detroit, Ch. XXXVII, pg. 231-233:

"In 1712, at the instigation of the English, the Foxes, aided by the Kickapoos and Mascoutin s attacked the fort....the allied Indians at one time were about to give up the contest, bu t large presents from [the British cmdr] caused them to renew the siege....nearly one thousan d massacred by the allied Indians....

"As early as 1745, and especially in 1747, such items as these are of frequent mention in ol d French records: 'Twenty-four Ottawas and Pottowatamies have been fitted out for the war ex cursion....Sieur Blondeau, a volunteer, commands them.'

"The English...were as unscrupulous as their antagonists in making use of the savages. Gover nor Clinton in a letter....1747 says, 'The council did not think it proper to put rewards fo r scalping or taking poor women or children prisoners in it; but the assembly has assured m e the MONEY SHALL BE PAID when it so happens, if the INDIANS insist upon it....I am pestere d every day with parties returning with prisoners and scalps and without a penny to pay the m with.'

"INDIANS RECEIVED GOODS IN PAYMENT FOR HUMAN SCALPS AS REGULARLY AS FOR COON AND MUSKRAT SKIN S....

"In 1747 the English, through the Iroquois, distributed [war] belts to the Hurons...to massac re the French at Detroit....

"The Territory watered by the Ohio [including northern Va.] was claimed by both English and F rench [one cause of the French & Indian War on the British]....in 1749 Pierre de Celeron...un der instructions from...Governor of New France [Canada/Detroit]...three hundred soldiers to t ake formal possession of the valley of the Ohio....To protest against them, GOVERNOR DINWIDDI E, on behalf of VIRGINIA WHICH CLAIMED THE TERRITORY, sent Col. "After the defeat of General Braddock several Indian tribes, who had formerly been friendly t o the English, were won over to the French....Fort Duquesne, 'Three hundred Canadians, who, w ith the garrison and the Detroit militia...will compose a force of twelve to fifteen hundre d men, exclusive of the Indians who are quite numerous.'

"In the fall of this year, on November 12, 1757, a party of three hundred Canadians and India ns, going by way of Niagara, fell upon the German settlers or PALATINES on the Mohawk Flats , killed forty, took one hundred and fifty captives....a portion of the force went from Detro it.

"Fort Duquesne...1758...abandoned by the French who retreated to Detroit. A new fort, calle d Fort Pitt....'The Hurons gave signs enough of their bravery and made about twenty prisoners , but the Ottawas disgraced themselves in scalping all those the French had killed."

3. From www.digitalhistory.org/fort_loudoun-va re. Loudon, Va:

"After General Braddock's defeat by the French at Fort Duquesne in 1755, REFUGEES FROM THE SH ENANDOAH VALLEY of Virginia settled in the western part of Loudoun County, south of Short Hil l.

"After the defeat of General Edward Braddock on July 9, 1755, the VIRGINIA FRONTIER lay ope n to Indian attacks....Governor Dinwiddie...ordered Washington to make the town of Wincheste r his headquarters....the village was in turmoil. the villagers were leaving and settlers fr om the outlying farms were coming in seeking protection. Scouts were reporting a party of on e hundred Indians were in the area, and seventy people had been killed, their farms destroyed ....With the coming of spring in 1756, the Indian raids once more began to increase....It [F ort Loudoun] commanded the lower SHENANDOAH Valley."

The loss of this Post opens a new road for th e Virginians to this Place, by the Miamis River. *The thing that alerted me to the Indians fighting the settlers at the instigation of the Bri tish and French was a historical novel I read regarding COL. CLARKE mentioned in the last quo te above. He was George Rogers Clark, older brother of the Lewis & Clark expedition fame. T he Clarks were from Virginia. This well-researched historical novel is "From Sea to Shinin g Sea" by James Alexander Thom, Ballentine Books, NY.

I would like to add to all of this that I was born in a suburb of Detroit. I do not take per sonal responsibility for what my ancestors did. Recently I read a genealogy email by someon e who said the yankee General Sherman was determined to ruin the south forever, and I

Samuel Boehm was married to Elizabeth Funk, daughter of Jacob Funk of near Strasburg. After t his attack the families went back to Pennsylvania for a while and Samuel did not return to th e Page County area but instead took up land just west of Strasburg where he lived the rest o f his life. His older children married into Massanutten famiies. Daughter Magdalena married A braham Hiestand, son Jacob married Mary Burner, daughter of Jacob Burner (another signatory t o the 1758 letter). There is a fairly good write up on Samuel and some of his children in m y book "From the Rhine to the Shenandoah" (Funk chapter). published in 1971.

BOEHM CEMETERY Tillmer Stickley Farm, Lebanon Church, Virginia

(Beginning of Don Silvius) "SHENANDOAH ROOTS"

By Don Silvius

High on a hill northeast of Route 55 between Strasburg and Lebanon Church is a beautiful litt le cemetery encircled by a black old-style wrought iron fence. This cemetery is known as Boeh m Cemetery. To me it is as close as I can get to the genesis of my family. From the vantage point of the little cemetery, one can see the tops of the hills to the Wes t as they verge upon the Allegheny Mountains. On my memorable visit to this site, in the lat e summer of 1994, a thunderstorm had just crossed the valley, and clouds still clung to the t op of North Mountain.

There are as many as 350 graves in this common burial ground. Most of the graves are marke d solely with field stones, some with hand-carved inscriptions to commemorate lost loved one s buried there. More modern stones and markers are evident throughout the cemetery. Conformin g with an old German custom, the burials are aligned with the foot of the graves facing towar d true East.

The oldest known burial here is Elizabeth Boehm, who died May 10, 1783, but certainly some o f the other field-stone marked graves are older. By the discernible names on the stones, thi s was a burial ground for, among others, German, Scots-Irish, and English families. At leas t one Revolutionary War veteran is buried here, John Bly, a sergeant in the 8th Virginia Regi ment is memorialized with two markers. There could be several Civil War veterans buried here , since the mid-1800's seem to be the pinnacle of use for this burial ground.

One of the families that called this area home during this time was the Supingers. Descende d from the Zuppinger family of Switzerland, the earliest established burial from this famil y was Conrad Supinger, who died October 30, 1813. Beside him is Mary Supinger, most likely hi s wife, who died January 30, 1817. These graves are marked with inscribed field stones bearin g their names. A Supinger family member worked hard to memorialize his lost loved ones. At le ast one other generation of this family is buried here, William Supinger (2-April-1803 - 16-M arch-1881), could have been Conrad and Mary's son.

Boehm Cemetery would have to include members of the Boehm family. As mentioned before, Eliza beth Boehm is the earliest known burial here. Even her marker is an inscribed field stone. Ab raham and Joseph Boehm, who died in 1813 and 1809 respectively, could have been sons or grand sons of Elizabeth. Mary Boehm, who died in 1934 also lies here.

Bakers and Stickleys are also buried here. The intertwining of these two families is well doc umented. Abraham Baker and his wife Tirzah, whose maiden name was Boehm, share a modern styl e headstone. The Stickley family is one of the pioneering families in this area. They are des cended from the Stöckli family of Switzerland. Descendants of the Stickley family currently o wn the property surrounding Boehm Cemetery.

The most common surname in this cemetery is Mowery. At least four generations of Mowerys ar e buried in this picturesque cemetery. Fred R. Mowery (16-September-1788 - 4- April-1866) i s the earliest with a marker. I would surmise that, since they owned property nearby, Fred' s parents, Frederic and Elizabeth (Rosenberger) Mowery, and his wife Catherine (Supinger) Mow ery also lie in Boehm Cemetery. Fred and Catherine's sons Cornelius and John F. Mowery were i nterred here as were their wives. Cornelius was a Confederate veteran who died 11-December-18 61 after being listed as absent sick from his regiment 22-November-1861. There is no indicati on of the nature of his illness or the cause of his death. Another brother, Ephraim is said t o have been captured as a prisoner of war on his own property during the Battle of Fisher's H ill. Ephraim Mowery died in 1864 at a prisoner of war camp in Elmira, NY, where he is buried . The wives and children of these three brothers were also laid to rest in Boehm Cemetery. Th e early deaths of some of their children is evidence of how life-threatening the process of c hildbirth was in the past for both mother and child.

I knew, before I visited this quaint little cemetery that I would find some of my Mowery anc estors here. I did not know that the Mowerys were just the tip of the iceberg that is my fami ly tree. In addition to being descended from the Mowery family buried here, I have ancestor s in this cemetery from the families of Boehm, Baker, Stickley, Supinger, and perhaps also Kl ine and Watson. Of the 80 plus marked graves in this cemetery, 45 bear surnames that are vali dated branches of my family tree. If only we could know the names of the others buried in unm arked graves here.

My trip to Boehm Cemetery in 1994, with emotions still running high from the birth of my firs t child, was akin to Alex Haley's search for Kunta Kinte. Only I didn't have to travel to Afr ica, just 40 minutes south on interstate 81, to be able to stand in the same place so many ge nerations of my forebears stood. I could see the same countryside they saw and experience som e of the same emotions they felt. It was as though I had traveled back in time.

If you have become disconnected from your roots, maybe you should try to get back in touch wi th them. The moment of re-connection is a great joy. The ties that bind us are eternal ties . They contain such power, force and influence, that once you are disconnected, the rejoinin g is like lighting up a city. For me, this day was like lighting up the world. Each person bu ried in Boehm or any other cemetery has a story to be told. Whether they were kings, soldier s or dirt farmers, all their stories are equally important.

Don Silvius works as a computer programmer, has been involved in genealogical research for ab out five years and has written approximately 150 songs, including all of the music for his we dding. A descendant of three families (Silvius, Campbell and Mowery) who have been in the Val ley since at least the early 1800's, Don lives with his wife and two children near Inwood, W V on part of the property once owned by his great-grandparents. He's a graduate of Shepherd C ollege in Shepherdstown, WV, and is active in his local Little League Baseball organization . Don can be reached by e-mail at DSilvius@bibfile.com .
