General Notes for Child Julius Elkanah Boggs
Hon. Julius E. Boggs, a prominent young attorney of Pickens, B.C.,wasborn February 14,1854 in Pickens county, the son of George W.B.Boggs, a native also of Pickens county and by occupation a farmer.Thefather served as lieutenant in the Hampton Legion and waskilledduring the retreat from Yorktown to Williamsburg, Va., May 4th,1862.He was the son of William Boggs also a native of Pickens countyand afarmer by occupation. He was the son of Joseph Boggs, a nativeofIreland, who came to America in the latter part of theeighteenthcentury and located in South Carolina. Eliza K. McWhorterwas themaiden name of the mother of Julius E. Boggs. She was also anative ofPickens county, and the daughter of Rev. John McWhorter, aBaptistclergyman and a farmer. He was the son of John McWhorter, anative ofIreland, who came to America toward the close of the lastcentury andsettled in South Carolina. The mother of Mr. Boggs, thesubject ofthis sketch, died March 3, 1886. Julius E.Boggs was rearedon a farmin Pickens county. His early education was acquired underthe tuitionof Miss M. A. Clayton, and he was for one year a student ofRev.J.L.Kennedy, a noted educator, and for one year at thePickensacademy. During the latter years of his youth he gave someattentionto mercantile pursuits, and between the ages of eighteenandtwenty-six he taught school from two to ten months each year. Fortwoyears he taught an academy at Liberty, S. C., and for one yearasimilar institution at Pickens. At the age of twenty-two he beganthestudy of law under Capt. C.L. Hollingsworth, of Pickens, andonJanuary 16, 1880, he was admitted to the bar. In January, 1881,heentered upon the practice of his profession at Pickens. In December,1881, he removed to Marshall, Tex., and was admitted to practice inthecourts of that state. Two months later, February, 1882, hereturned toPickens, where he has since been in the active practice ofhisprofession. He has already reached a high rank at the bar andisregarded as one of the most promising young attorneys in the state.Inpolitics he is a democrat, and in 1882 was elected to thestatelegislature, in which body he was next to the youngest member. Hewasre-elected in 1884 and served another term of two years. Mr. Boggsisan elder in the Presbyterian church and a member of the Masoniclodge.He is the present master of Keowee lodge, F.& A. M., NO. 79, andhasonce represented that lodge in the grand lodge of South Carolina.Heholds a membership in the State Bar association. December 24th,1882,he was married to Miss Minnie Lee Bruce, of Pickens. They havefourchildren, three of whom are sons. Mr. Boggs is a stockholder intheEasley Banking company, of Easley,S. C., and also a director. Heis astockholder in the Easley Oil Mill and Fertilizer company. In1886 hepurchased the Pickens Sentinel, which he has owned and editedeversince.
