John Bowen's will was probated on May 19, 1761 in Augusta Co. ,Virginia. He was a wealthy planter in Lancaster Co.,Pennsylvania.Moved to Augusta Co., Virginia about 1730. He had 13children. Alleight sons were Revolutionary War Soldiers.

Lily moved from Pennslyvania about 1730. The family possibly couldhavebeen Quakers. After John's death, lily moved southwest. AfterherFather's death, her mother married a Mr. Hunter and hadseveralchildren. In 1779, she purchased 800 acres on Holston RiverValley inVirginia. In her will, she left her estate to Reece, William,Robert,Henry, Charles, Agnes, and Jean. General Notes (Husband)
The Bowen family was among the early settlers of the upper part ofSouth Carolina. There is an old plantation on which one branch ofthis family settled on the waters of Georges Creek, about two mileswest of the Saluda River, half way between the city of Greenville andEasley, SC A grist and flour mill were built on this place, and aftera time a cotton gin and saw mill were added. This mill was known asBowen's mill, but it has since passed out of the family, and is nowknown as Kay's Mill. In the early days there was a blacksmithbandwagon repair shop located near the mill.[Pickens Family history]

From BOWEN-FIELD-NIMMONS genealogy: 24. JOHN BOWEN resided at, or near the place where his father, CaptainRobert Bowen, settled in George's Creek section, Pendleton District,now Pickens County, South Carolina. Here John and Martha"Patsy"(Hallum) Bowen reared a large family of sons and daughters, inthe spirit of freedom. It was an age of high ideals, strongconvictions,and vigorous action. Its dominant political creed was:"Free Trade,States Rights, Liberty, or Death."
in 1832, John Bowen was thrown from a horse; the fall tumbled hisintestines, causing them to lock, and he died soon afterwards. He andhis wife, Martha "Patsy", are buried in the McAdams Cemetery, near thehome place.
In 1932 (a century later) a group of the Bowen descendants gathered atthe old Bowen homestead where their Revolutionary War ancestor came tofrom Virginia and settled soon after the close of the war. The oldhouse was still standing, a two-story wood structure, chimney at eachend of the house, in the shadows of a spreading balsam, cedar, andsycamore trees. In the attic of the house was an old spinning wheel,its spokes hand carved of solid white oak, which no doubt had spunmany a yard of thread, woven into cloth, knitted into socks andstockings for the family. While here in these surroundings the olderones of the group recalled some incidents of the John Bowen family.The eldest of the group was George W. "Wash" Bowen, grandson, who saidthat he was about eight years old at his grandmother's death, andremembers going here as a child. Here, a granddaughter,Martha"Mattie" E. (Bowen) Nimmons stayed at intervals in her youth.She told to her children of many incidents of her ancestors of longago. To see the surrounding, and recall some of the incidents this dayin the month of May, 1932, was an inspiration to the descendants.

The stone sarcophagi of Martha & John Bowen are overgrown with mosswhich has obscured but not destroyed the inscriptions. Joe Looper cleaned andphoto- graphed Martha's in April 1990. It reads:

1868: Pioneer citizen, commissioned by the Confederacy to supplyprovisions. Also served with the commission that selected the site ofthe town of Pickens in 1868. 1896: 19 Mar: Laurence Bowen of Grayson Co, Texas is visiting hisbrothers Postmaster R A Bowen, Hon T W Bowen and G W Bowen. He went toTexas about 20 years ago. Mr Bowen will remain in this area to regainhis health. (The Peoples Journal p 92) 1900: 12 July: Reese Bowen died the 7 at his home. He was 86 yearsold and leaves a wife and 11 children. Burial was at Tabor MethodistChurch. The service was conducted by Rev J M Stewart, Rev B EGrandyand Rev R R Dagnall.
