HAMPTON, Richard (Brother of John Hampton; uncle of Wade H ampton, 1791-1858; granduncle of Wade Hampton, 1818-1902) , Senator from Saxe Gotha District.
-Born in 1752, probably in Virginia, the son of Anthon y Hampton and Elizabeth Preston. Removed to South Carolin a in 1774 and settled first in Spartan District. Planter an d merchant. Early in Revolutionary War, engaged in trade wi th his brother Wade; supplied General Sumter at one time wi th 100 tons of corn meal; served as captain and colonel of Orangeburg Regiment, 1780- 82. Lieutenant colonel of Saxe Gotha regiment of militia , 1787-88. Had trading post at Granby. S.C. House of Repr esentatives, Upper or Spartan District,1778-80; Saxe Gotha , 1781-82. S. C. Senate, Saxe Gotha, 1784-92. Commissione r for making navigable Broad River, 1785. Ferry over Congar ee, 1785. Commissioner of roads. Commissioner to improve na vigation of Congaree River, 1791.
