Jacob Stover was the brother of Peter Stover (Stauffer). Peter got the land grant and establ ished the town of Strasburg VA.
Here is notes on Jacob.
Emigrated to the Shenandoah Valley about the Year 1749. He settled in Frederick County . The Virginia census of 1782 shows Jacob Stover in Frederick with a family of four.
Jacob who was an interesting character and enterprising, as it seems, to a fault, pushe d on to the unexplored country west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, becoming one of the earlies t settlers of the Valley of Virginia.
In the year 1729 Jacob made application for a grant of land on the Shenandoah River an d on June 7, 1730 he was granted leave by the Colonial Council to take up 10,000 acres on th e south fork of the said river, for the settlement of himself and divers Germans and Swiss wh om he proposed to bring thither within the next two years, and said land to be laid off in su ch tracts as he should judge fitting.
Jacob selected his grant in two trats of 5000 acres each, one along the river between th e prest Luray and Elkton, the other along the same river, higher up, between Elkton and Por t Republic. The present town of Massanutten was established on his grant. His wife's Christ ian name was Margaret.
Samuel Kercheval narrates the following in connection with Stover's grant: On his appli cation to the executive for his grant, he was refused unless he could give satisfactory assur ance that he would have the land settled with the requisit number of families within a give n time. Being unable to do this, he forthwith passed over to England, petioned the King to d irect his grant to be issued, and in order to insure sucess, had given human names to every h orse, cow, hog, and dog he owned, and which he represented as heads of families, ready to mig rate and settle the land.
The citizens of Massanuttenbecame apprehensive that Stover did not have a good title t o the land which had sold them, and we find the following names signed to a petition to the C ouncil in 1733: Adam Miller, Abram Strickler, Mathias Selzer, Philip Long, Paul Long, Michae l Rhinehart, Hans Rood and Michael Kaufman. Stover was sustained in his title; however, an d given deeds for the two tracts Dec 15 1773. He disposed of the major portion of the land s oon after this.

ZYXW: "Christian Bowman of Shenandoah Co" by MacDonald and Millner Upon arrival in the Shenandoah Valley, Christian purchased 675 acres of land from William Rus sell on May 26, 1737, just south of Strasburg, on the south side of the North Fork River, a t the mouth of Trembling Run. (Orange County Deed Books) During his life he made further purchases, amassing a large amount of real estate bythe tim e of his death. << from an eMail: I don't believe the George Bowman who was the subject of John Wayland's book (The Bowmans , A Pioneering Family) was the son of Cornelius Bowman. That impression evidently stems fro m two brief entries in Chalkley's Augusta County, Virginia Records: 16 Aug 1749: "George Bowman, son of Cornelius deceased, and Ann Bowman to his Mother, Ann Bow man, chattels and slave. Teste: Martin Shoemaker, Wm. Rogers" (Augusta Co. Deed Book 3,p. 60) March 1764: "Bowman vs. Bird -- Cornelius Bowman, father of George and Peter Bowman. Peter Bo wman's widow, Margaret, married Van Pelt." Clearly we have a Cornelius and Ann Bowman of Augusta county whose sons were Peter (married M argaret) and George. The mistake is assuming that this George of Augusta County was the Georg e Bowman Sr. of Cedar Creek (Frederick Co.) who married Maria Elisabetha Heydt (Hite). Georg e Sr.'s will was made 3 November 1764 FrederickCo. VA (will book 3, p. 431-434) and probate d Frederick Co. 2 Mar 1768; one ofGeorge Sr.'s sons, George Jr.'s will will was made 27 Jun e 1769 Frederick Co VA. The latter's Frederick Co. will is listed by Clayton Torrence in the book, Virginia Wills an d Administrations 1632-1800 (Geneal. Pub. Co., Baltimore, p. 46). But here's the rub: Torrence's book says that Augusta Co estate administrations exist for Pet er Bowman (1763) and George Bowman (1766), both of Augusta County. Although I have not seen t hese administrations, the differences in datesand places suggest that we are talking about tw o different George Bowmans! Here is a partial list some of the Bowman wills (w), inventories (i) and administrations (a ) on page 46 in Torrence's book: Augusta Co. VA: Peter Bowman 1763 (a), George Bowman 1766 (a). Frederick Co., VA: Andrew Bowman 1749 (i), AndrewBowman 1764 (i), Christian Bowman 1764 (w) , George Bowman 1764 (w), George Bowman 1769 (w), Christian Bowman 1771 (i), George Bowman 17 71 (i), Joseph Bowman 1780 (w), George Bowman 1789 (i) Shenandoah Co., VA: Jacob Bowman 1774 (a), Jacob Bowman 1778 (a), Christian Bowman 1783 (a) , John Bowman 1783 (a), George Adam Bowman 1797 (w). Note the Shenandoah County George Bowman whose middle name is Adam. I speculate that this Geo rge has been confused with Augusta Co. George whose parents were Cornelius and Ann. Perhaps t hat's why, in some accounts, Ann's name is listed as Ann or Anna Adams. Thus, it is clear to me that we are dealing with three different George Bowmans in the Shenan doah Valley of VA: 1)George Sr. of Frederick Co. VA (m. Maria Elisabetha Heydt); George's parents were unknown t o Wayland. 2) George of Augusta Co. whose brother was Peter. ZYXW: Church of Latter Day Saints Christian, like most German settlers at thattime, came to the Shenandoah Valley via Pennsylva nia. Researchers believe hiscountry of origin is probably Switzerland, but as political bound aries were constantly shifting at that time, it could have been any number of Germanic countries of that region.

ZYXW: "Christian Bowman of Shenandoah Co" by MacDonald and Millner Upon arrival in the Shenandoah Valley, Christian purchased 675 acres of land from William Rus sell on May 26, 1737, just south of Strasburg, on the south side of the North Fork River, a t the mouth of Trembling Run. (Orange County Deed Books) During his life he made further purchases, amassing a large amount of real estate bythe tim e of his death. << from an eMail: I don't believe the George Bowman who was the subject of John Wayland's book (The Bowmans , A Pioneering Family) was the son of Cornelius Bowman. That impression evidently stems fro m two brief entries in Chalkley's Augusta County, Virginia Records: 16 Aug 1749: "George Bowman, son of Cornelius deceased, and Ann Bowman to his Mother, Ann Bow man, chattels and slave. Teste: Martin Shoemaker, Wm. Rogers" (Augusta Co. Deed Book 3,p. 60) March 1764: "Bowman vs. Bird -- Cornelius Bowman, father of George and Peter Bowman. Peter Bo wman's widow, Margaret, married Van Pelt." Clearly we have a Cornelius and Ann Bowman of Augusta county whose sons were Peter (married M argaret) and George. The mistake is assuming that this George of Augusta County was the Georg e Bowman Sr. of Cedar Creek (Frederick Co.) who married Maria Elisabetha Heydt (Hite). Georg e Sr.'s will was made 3 November 1764 FrederickCo. VA (will book 3, p. 431-434) and probate d Frederick Co. 2 Mar 1768; one ofGeorge Sr.'s sons, George Jr.'s will will was made 27 Jun e 1769 Frederick Co VA. The latter's Frederick Co. will is listed by Clayton Torrence in the book, Virginia Wills an d Administrations 1632-1800 (Geneal. Pub. Co., Baltimore, p. 46). But here's the rub: Torrence's book says that Augusta Co estate administrations exist for Pet er Bowman (1763) and George Bowman (1766), both of Augusta County. Although I have not seen t hese administrations, the differences in datesand places suggest that we are talking about tw o different George Bowmans! Here is a partial list some of the Bowman wills (w), inventories (i) and administrations (a ) on page 46 in Torrence's book: Augusta Co. VA: Peter Bowman 1763 (a), George Bowman 1766 (a). Frederick Co., VA: Andrew Bowman 1749 (i), AndrewBowman 1764 (i), Christian Bowman 1764 (w) , George Bowman 1764 (w), George Bowman 1769 (w), Christian Bowman 1771 (i), George Bowman 17 71 (i), Joseph Bowman 1780 (w), George Bowman 1789 (i) Shenandoah Co., VA: Jacob Bowman 1774 (a), Jacob Bowman 1778 (a), Christian Bowman 1783 (a) , John Bowman 1783 (a), George Adam Bowman 1797 (w). Note the Shenandoah County George Bowman whose middle name is Adam. I speculate that this Geo rge has been confused with Augusta Co. George whose parents were Cornelius and Ann. Perhaps t hat's why, in some accounts, Ann's name is listed as Ann or Anna Adams. Thus, it is clear to me that we are dealing with three different George Bowmans in the Shenan doah Valley of VA: 1)George Sr. of Frederick Co. VA (m. Maria Elisabetha Heydt); George's parents were unknown t o Wayland. 2) George of Augusta Co. whose brother was Peter. Their parents were Cornelius and Ann Bowma n of Augusta Co. 3) George Adam Bowman of Shenandoah Co. Parents unknown to me. Jack Bowman Bailey >>
