Obit from Keowee Courier 5-17-1905 "Major James L. Boyd died at his home on Crooked Creek near NewryonMonday the 15th instant at the advanced age of 84 years. Heleaveshis wife and one son Robert H. Boyd of Seneca who have thesympathy ofmany friends. By occupation, a farmer, yet he tookinterest in thewelfare of his community, county and state. He servedmany years,first a captain and then a major in the militia. He alsorepresentedPickens District in the General Assembly and his strongsense made hima valuable member. He was a member of the BaptistChurch, a MasterMason. He was buried at New Hope Baptist Church."
James L. Boyd served in the Reconstruction Congress to rewriteSC'sConstitution after the Civil War. He was a believer in "equalrights"for all people and tried hard to make sure the black tenantfarmer onhis land were treated fairly in trade.
He was a miller and surveyor. He had lost one arm in the gin so hedidnot fight in the war. He could read and write so he wrote letterstosoldiers for their parents and read the letters sent home totheparents. He knew not only the value of land but also of education.
