The son of the first Elector of Hanover, Ernest Augustus, by Sophia, daughter of Frederick, Elector of Palatine, and grand-daughter of James 1, he inherited the throne through his mother following the Act of Succession of 1701 which conferred the succession on her heirs.House of Hanover Reigned 1714-1727,
GEORGE I (1660-1727) of Great Britain became king when his distant cousin Queen Anne died in 1714. After Anne's last surviving child had died in 1700, many people claimed that only her half brother James Francis Edward Stuart, a Roman Catholic and son of King James II, had the right to succeed her. In 1701, however, Parliament passed an Act of Settlement that made sure that no Catholic would become monarch. The act provided that Princess Sophia, a Protestant, would succeed Anne as ruler of England unless Anne had another child. Sophia was a granddaughter of King James I of England and electress of the German territory of Hanover (see HANOVER). Her son George became heir to the throne after her death in June 1714 and became king after Anne's death in August. George was born in the city of Hanover. He became elector of the territory of Hanover in 1698.
George was ignorant of British politics and did not speak English well. But he kept in close touch with his ministers, of whom the most famous was Sir Robert Walpole (see WALPOLE, SIR ROBERT). The two most dramatic events of George's reign were the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, which attempted to restore the Stuart family as rulers of Great Britain, and the bursting of the "South Sea Bubble," a great financial scandal, in 1720.
Update: from Queen's Official Web Site 8/10/97.
The Hanoverians
George I
As Sophia, Electress of Hanover, had died two
months before Queen Anne (who died in 1714),
Sophia's eldest son George, Elector of Hanover
inherited the throne under the Act of Settlement
(there were some 50 Roman Catholic relatives with
stronger claims). His claim was challenged by
James Stuart, Roman Catholic son of James II,
who landed in Scotland in 1715, following a rising
of Scottish clans on his behalf; this was
unsuccessful and he soon withdrew. George I
(reigned 1714-27) spoke German and French and
a little English; he regularly visited Hanover to fulfil
his duties there. Family tensions (George
imprisoned his wife in 1694) and political intrigue
(opposition gathered round the Prince of Wales)
led to differences and intense dislike between
George and his son, George. In 1719 and 1720,
and during most of the king's absences in Hanover,
power was delegated to a Regency Council and
not to the Prince of Wales.
Unfamiliar with the customs of the country, George
was dependent on his ministers - the Whigs
dominated Parliament during his reign. After the
South Sea Bubble crisis of 1720 (when the South
Sea Company, with heavy government and royal
investments, crashed), Robert Walpole took over.
The most able of George's ministers, and known as
the first 'Prime Minister', Walpole's was the longest
running administration in British history (1721-42).
George died in 1727, during a visit to Hanover.
Additional Information:
George I was born and raised in Germany. He was the son of Ernest, the elector of Hanover (one of the handful of men who had the right to cast a vote for the German Emperor) and Sophia, the granddaughter of James I. He was raised in the German Hanoverian court, and married a German wife (Sophia the Princess of Zelle), and inherited the throne of England through a technicality -- Queen Anne had no children and no heirs, and the Parliament considered George I a better alternative than James Edward Stuart, who was next in line. He was thoroughly German and had absolutely no interest in learning English or about the English culture. In fact, he spent more than half his reign in his beloved Hanover. This did not bode well for his popularity with the British.
George brought a host of German attendants with him to England. The attendants appear to have had one simple attitude -- get as rich as possible as quickly as possible. George also had two mistresses come with him: Ehrengard ("the maypole") and Charlotte ("the elephant"). His wife, ironically, was in prison for adultery, so did not accompany him.
George I's reign created an English government that was able to run indepently of the king. Most notably, the office of prime minister was created during this time.
During his reign, a group of Scots stormed London in support of James Edward Stuart, "The Old Pretender." However, by the time James arrived, the revolt had already been crushed, and the French king (who had promised support) did not show up at all.
George I was instrumental in negotiating a complex set of alliances throughout Europe, and he kept England out of war for his entire reign. England would not have another war until George II declared war on Spain in 1739.
George and his son, who would become George II, despised one another. When George left the country for one of his frequent trips to Hanover, he preferred to leave the government in the hands of his ministers in preference to his son. George II remained the heir, however, and took over the government when his father died in 1727.
