According to the 1880 Census, Kansas, Harrison Twp., Franklin County, Mahala's mother is listed as being a native of Kentucky.  Her father's  wife, Achsa, is listed as being a native of Indiana.  So I take this to mean that Achsa is not Mahala's mother, but step-mother.  Further investication is needed.
