BRATTON William (grandfather of John Bratton), Senator fro m York District.
-Born in 1742 in Ireland; came with parents first to Pen nsylvania, then to York, S. C. Married Martha Robinson of Rowan County, N.C. Durin g Revolutionary War, colonel under General Thomas Sumter; s erved in militia in York formed to stop advance of Britis h after fall of Charles Town in 1780. Tax collector, New Ac quisition, 1778-84. Commissioner for building court house a nd gaol, Pinckney District, 1791. One of first county cour t judges. Justice of peace. S. C. House of Representatives , New Acquisition District, 1784-90. S. C. Senate, York, 17 90-94; resigned on election as sheriff December 19, 1794 , serving four years. Trustee of Alexandria College in Pinc kney District, 1797. Member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church , McConnell's. Died February 9, 1815; buried in Bethesda Cemetery, York District.

General Notes for Child John W. Bratton Dr.
After graduating from South Carolina College and medical s chool, he was a doctor until named Captain in the Sixth Sou th Carolina in 1861. Promoted to Colonel in 1862, he led th e regiment on the Peninsula and was wounded and captured a t Seven Pines. Upon exchange, he fought at the Wilderness a nd was named temporary Brigadier General on 6 May, 1864. H e continued to fight with the Army of Northern Virginia unt il Appomattox and then became a farmer, Congressman, legisl ator, and Democratic politician. Nicknamed "Old Reliable".
