Steven Bryant changed his last name to Williams before he married Martha Breedlove because he thought he had killed a man in a fight and the law was after him. Williams was the name of an aunt whom he had stayed with, and all of his children were born under the name Williams.
He had one sister, Lucy, lived in Dustin, and she married Pat Murphy.
Lucy and Thomas Pat Murphy's daughters married two of Martha's brothers. Myrtle married James Squire Breedlove and Viola married Thomas Jasper Breedlove. Another of the brothers, Edward Justas Breedlove married Lucy Ellen Williams, who was the aunt that Steven Lee lived with. Lucy Ellen was the daughter of Thomas James Williams and Zilpha Ellen Connor. Zilpha was the sister of Steven's mother.

Martha was short, and had dark hair. She was a quiet person, and you never felt you knew her very well. I don't know when she moved there but my earliest memories of her are visiting her in Flagstaff, Arizona. We used to go to Oklahoma every year to visit the Duggers and we would always stop in Arizona to visit her. She was married to Jack Weems then, and they eventually moved to Antioch. I think it was because of the altitude in Flagstaff. They lived in a small apartment in Antioch, and after Jack died she stayed there. She was a Mormon, although I think she was raised a Methodist. She was a very proud woman, always kept herself fixed up and kept a clean house. I think that was very important to her.
I have been told that Lee, the father of her children, left her when they were small, and that she took in boarders, cooked and did laundry, or whatever she had to do to take care of her family. She loved anything to do with Indians, such as jewelry, clothing, pictures. I always felt she was part Indian but I haven't been able to verify it.
General Notes for Child Jessie Jeff Williams
Jessie worked at the Steel Mill in Pittsburg, Ca., for over 20 years before he had to retire disabled. He was confined to a wheel chair for several years prior to his death at the age of 56. Jessie was a very likable person, a lot of fun to be around. He worked hard all his life, was a good father.
Jessie and Dorothy, came to California during the GREAT DEPRESSION in 1936. They first went to Westwood where they stayed about a year, that is where Johnny was born. They went there because Roy and Dovie Rolen were there, and Roy got Jessie a job in a veneer plant. From Westwood they moved to Semi Valley, Ca. and lived in a big house with Jessie's mother Martha and her husband Jack Weems, Jessie's sister Margaret, and some of Jacks children. They stayed there a short time, and then moved to Tranquility, Ca. on a cotton farm. They lived there in a tent with Marie, Jessie's sister, and her husband Ed Rich, and their son Johnny, and Marie and Ed's son Therman. They all lived in the tent until they were able to rent a cabin for $1.00 a month. The farm they lived on was kind of like a camp, and they said people were carried out of there that had starved to death. Sometimes they only had flour gravy to eat. One story they liked to tell was of Therman finding a goose nest with eggs in it; he took one back to his mom to fix for him and he had to share it with Johnny. Therman used to tease Johnny about that a lot.
Jessie and Dorothy moved to San Francisco during the early part of World War ll, and they both worked at the Shipyard at Hunter's Point. They stayed there until the war was over. They were able to save enough money to go back to Oklahoma, and they bought a grocery store, gas station in Hartshorne. They stayed in Oklahoma a few years and then came back to California. They eventually settled in Antioch, sometime in the late 40s or early 50s and moved around a bit until they moved to 232 Rossi Avenue, where Dorothy still lives today.

She found out he had killed his first wife, so she got word to her parents. John and the twins went after her and brought her home. She married Emerson James June 1882 in the Old Court house in McAlester, Oklahoma. He was Choctaw and was ther father of her children. They all got land through him. Emerson was killed in 1895. He was a U.S. Marshell and he had a large farm near Sulpher Cemetery. Most of the Breedloves lived in that area. Mary married a man named Bowling in 1899. He finally left and went to his son in Texas.

Information on this family from Martha Breedlove, and from 1850 Missouri census. Milton was a Methodist preacher, the black bible I have was used by him. Martha Breedlove gave it to me. She said he was a preacher in Joplin, Missouri.
Milton was listed in the 1850 Wright County , Mo. census page 247, household number 206, real estate value $300.

While I was visiting in Oklahoma one time I found on microfilm a copy of a newspaper, WILBURTON GAZETTE, Wilburton, Indian territory., Friday Dec. 8 1905, with a small article about the death of J. C. Breedlove. It read as follows: J.C. Breedlove of Thurston died last Sunday of pneumonia. He was living in a tent and was in a destitute condition. His relatives, it is said, allowed him to die uncared for.
