General Notes (Husband)
"Mary Brevard grew up in one of the half-dozen locally acc epted first families. The Brevards early displayed an incli nation to intellectuality. Ephraim followed his Uncle MacWh orter to Princeton, Adam wrote poetry and read law, and Jos eph became an honored judge in South Carolina. It is surpr ising that the ecclesiastical eminence of Dr. Alexander Mac Whorter did not divert one of his eight Brevard nephews t o the ministry. Perhaps their quarter of romance blood und uly diluted the piety of the Scotch "Mass." The Huguenots w ere apt to slip a little out of Piedmont line. Mary Brevar d was acquainted with so worldly a thing as an English nove l and was to name a daughter 'Pamela" several years befor e the Revolution. After their marriage, William Lee and Mar y Davidson continued to live in Centre congregation, wher e they had been reared. Their home was on a small rising a cross Davidson's Creek from the meeting-house. It was doub tless a hewn log structure, whether inherited by the brideg room or dovetailed together by his own labor is not known . If the latter, the stalwarts of the neighborhood would h ave pitched in to help raise the pile. There was a sprin g nearby, a well of Bethlehem to any home builder. Negroe s were few in number and chores were numberless. If the br ide was not skillful with distaff and shuttle, if she coul d not clean small game and poultry and spit them over a lo g fire, she was a rare "Mary" in a land of "Marthas." Ther e is nothing to indicate that William Lee followed a partic ular trade. Most family heads in the Catawba valley were f armers; tanning, smithing, and tavern-keeping being general ly side-line occupations. Will's preference was certainl y soldiering, but, wherever his mind, his hand was often pu t to the plough. That he trooped off to the Indian wars do es not prove him a poor husbandman, but his known devotio n to arms might indicate that tilling the soil was not hi s favorite out-of-door occupation. The requirements of a fr ontier plantation, however, included other activity perhap s more congenial to his tastes. The raising, breaking an d trading of horses were every farmer's province and the an imals almost a medium of exchange in the piedmont. There i s every reason to suppose that William Lee loved a good hor se. A "Blooded Sorrel Mare" was the only item of persona l property he thought necessary to mention in his will. Wil l early identified himself with the established forces of l aw and order, as might be expected of the former ward of Al exander Osborn and John Brevard. As early as 1770, he wa s appointed constable for his district and was responsibl e for keeping the peace and carrying out the decisions of t he justices. Among the assignments of the county judges t o the constables was the listing of the taxable inhabitants . This census-taking carried Will into the homes of most o f his neighbors and required a tactful approach. From eith er nature or necessity he developed a genial bonhomie tha t lifted most frontier latches. Keeping the peace, on th e other hand, called for a steady hand and a cool head. I n the making were Davidson's attributes of character whic h led the colonels at King's Mountain to petition for his l eadership as "a gentleman of address and [one] able to kee p up a proper discipline without disgusting the soldiery."
In the year 1772, Will became a captain in the Rowan mil itia and took his oath of allegiance to the King as the la w directed. In the same year Griffith Rutherford was commis sioned colonel of the county regiment. Uncultivated in min d or manners, Rutherford was honored by the backwoodsmen fo r horse sense and the singleness of purpose with which he w aged war. Davidson's military service was interwoven with t hat of Rutherford throughout the Revolution."
