General Notes (Husband)
There is something very interesting if not convinci n g i n t h e fact that the list of the Stortford Thomas' c hi ldre n co nt ains the same name of the wife and six name s o f chi ldre n th e same as those known to be children o f Tho mas o f Ipsw ich , namely Elizabeth, James, Joseph, J ohn, N athani el an d Susa n, and that the dates of their b aptism s corres pond i n gener al with those believed to b e the bi rthdate s of thes e Ipswic h children. It is stran ge that w e have n o positiv e record h ere in New Englan d of the age s of thes e persons , exceptin g Nathaniel, pa rticularly a s Joseph an d John bec ame ministe rs of som e distinction ; but neithe r Thomas no r either of th ose s ons here (wit h the solitar y exception o f Nathaniel) le f t a statemen t of his age i n any court test imony, as wa s of ten done i n those days; s o that there is n o absolut e test w hich ma y be applied t o the comparison o f the St ortford fami ly w ith the Ipswic h family. But the me ntio n of four sons a n d two daughters , with the approximati o n to the ages com monl y accepted he re of the Ipswich fami l y, certainly sta nds a s very stron g presumptive evidenc e th at they are id entical , and tha t the Massachusetts b aker wa s the son o f the Stort ford cu rrier. But so far as the Haverhill Emersons are concerned t h e r e i s nothing in these Stortford records that solve s t h e pr oble m of their origin. There are, however, man y pla ce s i n Engla nd where records show that the name Mi chae l Eme rso n was com mon in that period, and often asso ciate d wit h bot h Robert a nd Thomas; and the spelling Em merso n and E mberso n are frequ ent there; and some one o f thos e place s may hav e been the c radle of the Haverhil l famil y. Sereb y, in th e county of Lin coln, was one o f them; an d the fol lowing wi ll, given firs t by Mr. Henr y F. Water s and after ward by Dr . Emerson, dese rves to b e followe d out by any w ho investig ate this problem. Alexander Emerson of Sereby in the county of Lincoln, y e o m a n, made will 10 April, 1604, proved 10 February, 16 0 5 . La nd s in Sereby, Howsam, Cadney and Glamford Brigg e s (a ll i n Li ncolnshire and not far easterly from Scroo b y when ce th e May flower party came); bequests to wife , so ns Mich ael, R obert , Thomas, James and John; decease d so n George . (Pr. C t. o f Cant., Stafford, I;)r. Emerso n ha s brough t out i n " The E nglish Emersons " many will s o f persons c onnecte d with thi s family, and none of th em o ffers any ev idence t hat member s of the clan had com e t o America; bu t the groun d has not y et been completel y ex plored. Ther e is a good fi eld for rese arch upon thi s pro blem. Before the coming of Emersons to Massachusetts ther e h a d b e en some arriving in Virginia. William Emerson c am e ov e r a s a partner of John Davies in 1618 and was li vin g a t Jo rdan 's Jorney February 16, 1623. Ellis Emerso n wi th w ife A nn an d son Thomas, aged 11 years, came i n " Th e Geor ge " i n 1623 , and was living at Martin's Hu ndred . Whethe r they l eft des cendants or not is unknow n to th e writer. John Emerson (the name abbreviated as " Jo: ") came t o B o s t on in " The Abigail " in 1635; the only note in H ott e n re ga rding him is his age," 20." He settled at Sci tua t e an d mar ried a daughter of Rev. John Lothrop; the n dis ap peare d fro m our records. It has been asserted th at h e wa s calle d "bak er" in Hotten's list of passengers ; bu t thi s is inco rrect. A matter of considerable interest to some persons i s t h e q u estion whether the Massachusetts Emersons wer e enti tl e d t o bear a "coat of arms." We have seen tha t Thoma s cal le d hi mself "baker" in the deed wherein h e conveye d prope rt y to h is son John and made condition s to whic h he allud e d in hi s will; so that the ignoran t person wh o carve d a co at of ar ms on the gravestone o f Thomas' you ngest so n, Nath aniel, ma de a silly blunder . The Haverhil l Emerson s were a lso "yeome n," as Thoma s and his famil y called the mselves ; so that n o descenda nt of either o f the Massachus etts Eme rson familie s ha s the slightest r eason for usin g any coa t of arms as f r om Emerson ancestr y. It is the glory of New England that her founders wer e , w i t h a very small number of exceptions, scions of t h e midd l e c lass, the real honor and strength of Englan d , dilige n t work ers in useful avocations, whose lives w er e fille d wi th lovi ng service for God and humanity. Th e y cared mo re fo r helpin g hands than for empty "arms."

General Notes for Child Michael Emerson
MICHAEL EMERSON, born in England at a date not record e d h e r e, but probably as early as 1625, is mentioned fi rs t i n t hi s country in any record yet found, on " the l as t da y o f th e first month" (March) "1651," in a "Prese ntm ent, " a s a wit ness who might be called in a case rep orte d b y th e Grand Ju ry of Essex County court. His resi denc e i s not m entioned. T he next item is in the record s of t he t own of H averhill, Ma rch 3, 1655, when he rece ived fr om th e town on e of the allo tments of land that w ere mad e to in habitants:
"Voted and granted that Michael Emerson shall hav e t w o c o w commons and four acres of meadow to be laid o ut a ft er t h e second division of meadow is all laid out." These "cow commons" he was allowed to exchange fo r t w o o x c ommons in 1661. The grant shows that he wa s a res id en t of t he town and had two cows at that date.
He was one of those who had a share in certain meado w l a n d s which the town, gave out to inhabitants a littl e lat er.
"January 17, 1658. Michaell Emerson's third divisio n o f m e a dow being a quarter of an acre, shall be laid o ut t oget h e r with his four acres of meadow which was for merl y gran t e d to him."
He also had a portion in the fourth division of meado w , F e b ruary 28, 1661. Meantime he and his brother Robert had made a purc h a s e o f a farm in the southwestern part of the town. T h e de e d wa s dated January 6, 1662; the price was eighty -f ive p ou nds , and the condition that they should "pay f o r two ac re s an d a half of accommodations upon ye so la nd ."
"Six score acres of third Division of Upland more o r l e s s N orth East from Merrie's Pond Bounded with a whi t e O a k & a 1 3black Oak by ye' ad Pond & two white Oak s a t y e no rth. [Essex Deeds, 30, 85.] After this transfer the town gave him a tract adjoin i n g h i s farm and afterward permitted him to exchange so m e l and: "Laid out to Michaell Emerson Forty and four acres of u p l a n d adjoining to his other land which he had of Robe r t Sw a n , bounded with a white oak between Thomas Lillfo r d an d h i m and with a black oak at the pond. One acr e o f Meado w i n t hat land that is laid out to Mr. Ward , boun ded wit h upl and. " [Date not given in town record.] "December 14, 1663. Michael Emerson and Robert Emerso n s h a l l have liberty to lay down twenty or thirty acre s o f la n d , which is part of that they bought of Rober t Swan , o n t h e south side, and to take up as much as th ey la y dow n o n th e south west side of said land; Georg e Brown e an d Robe rt Sw an are chosen & appointed for t o exchang e an d lay ou t the l and now granted to the tw o Emersons." The very imperfect way in which lands were surveye d a t t h a t period resulted in many misunderstandings; no t st rang e l y the bonds of the Emerson farm were so poorl y def ine d th a t question arose as to whether their lin e did no t in clud e s ome of the "common" land; and they w ere oblig ed t o pa y fo r some which was found so fenced i n accident ally.
Michael Emerson was a man of decision and ability . H e w a s e lected constable in 16549 and one piece of hi s wr itin g * ha s come down in the files of Essex County c ourt . A wa rr ant h ad been placed in his handstand he end orsed * It is certain, therefore, that his making his "ma r k " t o h is will was caused by infirmity, not ignorance. Besides the work of the court a constable had to coll e c t " r ates" or taxes and keep close personal accounts w i t h th e to wn. Michael Emerson filled other positions o f r es ponsi bilit y. He had learned the trade of " cordwai ner " o r shoem aker , which then included a knowledge an d skil l co vering a ll ma terials and work that entered in to th e trade . So he w as cho sen "sealer of leather," th e offic er who h ad authori ty to s ee that all sales of le ather we re made h onestly, a s to qual ity and quantity. H e was app ointed t o " join wit h Newbury m en to lay out a nd state t he way be tween them an d us" Novemb er 19, 1662 . Was one o f the surv eyors of highw ays in 1695 , his por tion being t hat "betwee n the Saw Mil l river and th e Gre at Plain." A t that same t own meeting h e was elected o n e of the "tith ing men," appo inted to kee p order in th e plac e of worshi p, pretty goo d evidence tha t he wa s a member o f the chur ch. The churc h records for th e pe riod of his resi dence i n Haverhill ha ve been lost, s o t hat we cannot say wi th p ositiveness wh o were members , b ut this office is enou g h to base a stron g presumptio n upon . He was once prosec ute d for severely p unishing h is child , so sternly did h e oppos e what he beli eved t o be wrong; a ll his childre n did credi t to the fami ly e xcept Elizabeth , who again a nd again fel l into disgra ce . Mr. and Mrs. Eme rson, howev er, enjoyed th e respec t o f their neighbors, an d were val uable helpers i n prom otin g the advancement of th e commun ity in all good wa ys. In addition to the lands which fell to him as a propr i e t o r in the town's distributions, he bought lands of R ob e r t Sw an, George Corly, Peter Green and Thomas Davis . H e g av e t o his oldest son, John, a tract of land in t he c onve yan ce o f which we find a delightful piece of ev idenc e o f wha t ha s been presumed by more than one histo rian , bu t has ne ver b een openly proved in print befor e the p resen t writing . We q uote the essential portion s of the d eed.

This i s the la test date a t which we kno w of his activi ties; it wo ul d appear tha t he died soon af ter. He had bee n in activ e b usiness lif e, as our record s show, since 1651 ,64 yea rs, a nd must ha ve been upward s of eighty-five yea rs o f age whe n he best owed this gif t upon his namesake gra n dson.
Michael Emerson married April 1, 1657, Hannah, daug h t e r o f John and Mary (Satchwell) Webster. Her fathe r w a s a n earl y settler at Ipswich and a valuable citize n; a ft er h is deat h Mrs. Webster married second, John Em ery . Sh e ha d three br others, Satchwells, who came to th e sa me pl antat ion and pro ved worthy men. Mrs. Hannah (W ebste r) Eme rson h ad no holida y life; what with the care s o f a larg e family , the waywardn ess of one child, anot he r daughter' s dreadfu l experiences , and the inevitabl e di fficulties o f pionee r life, she ha d heavy burdens ; but s he bore all w ell and l eft a name fo r worthy livi ng. Sh e survived her h usband, bu t the time o f her deat h is no t known to us.
We present a verbatim copy of Michael Emerson's wil l ; h e d i d not write it, for his sight had failed so th a t he c oul d n ot even see to write his name at its clos e , as we h av e goo d proof he had been able to do up to m id dle life ; i t wa s a day of very imperfect "helps to re ad, " and ma n y a man o f that period whose writing is ext an t during h i s active yea rs left a will signed with a m ar k because h e c ould not se e to pen his autograph. Th e dat e of the pro vin g of the wil l is not endorsed on i t nor d o we find an y oth er record o f the fact; but fro m referen ces to him a s decea sed a littl e later it may b e properl y inferred tha t it wa s taken int o court (afte r Mr. Emers on's death) nea r the cl ose of the y ear 1715.
