General Notes (Husband)
W.S. Floyd, Jr. was called Billy. He grew into a very tall slender man and remained so all of his life. He inherited the keen intellects of the Floyds and of the Niernsees, was extremely athletic and seemed to be totally fearless. He was a common sight around the village of Floyd Dale charging his horse at breakneck speed around the square formed by the village streets. Once, during the 1930's, he enlisted help from the other local youths and resurrected the 4-horse shay of his grandfather, Mr. Bascom Floyd. Billy and the young men hooked four horses to it and drove it round and round the village like Romans in a chariot. Billy was a great swimmer and baseball player, and he was much liked by everyone. He became a S.C. State Trooper, and during his rookie period when in those times they had to ride motorcycles on highway patrol. One night he was moving fast and came up behind a car without lights and he could not avoid ramming the car. The force threw him off the motorcycle over the top of the car and he came down on his left hand which caught his weight but was so mangled that it had to be amputated about mid wrist. He recovered and managed quite well with a unique mechanical arm. Most of his productive life was spent in the Patrol. He finally retired and ran a store and developed the last of what had been a substantial family estate. Billy was a striking older man. His hair was full and pure white and he was perfectly postured. He looked very much like one of the Hapsburg Princes who shaped the lives of his ancestors. See Virginia Niernsee Floyd.
