General Notes (Husband)
Mexican War Record of George A Brittain
George A. Brittain was born July 31, 1825, in Lincoln County, Tenn., and came with his father to Calhoun County, Alabama (then Benton County) in the year of 1834, while the Indians were still here. He volunteered on the 16th day of June 1846, and was assigned to Co. " E" 1st Alabama Regular Infantry, Captain F. D. Shelly's Company. His older brother Joel had moved to Texas with his family in 1845.
Company "E" arrived in Old Mexico on July 4, 1846, and camped at Camp Belnap, Mexico. After being there about two months, Mr. Brittain was taken ill with typhoid fever and was sent to the hospital at Matamoris, Mexico, He was there about three months before he was able to return to his company. The company went to Tampico and then Vera Cruz.
On March 24, 1847, the U. S. Army surrounded Vera Cruz. On March 26 General Scott send word to the Mexican general that he (Scott) would open his batteries on the city at 4 P.M. requesting him (the Mexican general) to remove the women and children to a place of safety. The Mexican general refused to surrender (and also refused to move the women and children.) Scott opened fire at 4 P.M. and kept shelling until 10 A.M. March 29 when the Mexican general surrendered. The Mexican loss of dead and wounded was about 1200, many women and children among them. The American loss was about 60. After the surrender the U. S. Army moved to Alverrado on the Rio Del river about 75 miles south of Vera Cruz, They were there about three days before moving to Cragora.
From Cherogorada Brittain's was sent to Jalappa for two weeks and then to New Orleans. He was
mustered out of service two weeks later. Mr. Brittain went to Wetumpka, Alabama, by boat, and from there to Talladega by private conveyance. He arrived home on July 6, 1847, a year and two weeks after he had enlisted.
He married Lucinda E. Lipscomb on November 16, 1848 and lived near Wellington. He had eight children. He departed this life on Sept 11, 1908, being 83 years and 42 days old. He was on the U.S.
Pension roll for his service in Mexico, also served in the Civil War.
Civil War Record
Mr. Brittain volunteered in March 1862, and was assigned to Company "H", 22nd Alabama Regimental Infantry unit. He went with his company to Talladega, where they stayed about two weeks and were sent to Shelbyville, Tenn. for a month. From Shelbyville they proceeded to Chattanooga and were there until July 1862. The 22nd was sent to defend Atlanta. In a battle near Atlanta, George was wounded in his left hand and sent to a hospital at Forsyth, Georgia. After two weeks at the hospital, he returned to his unit and served continuously without furlough until September 1863.
On September 19-20. 1863, the 22nd fought in the battle of Chicamauga, Georgia. Mr. Brittain was wounded in his left thigh on the second day of battle. He was taken from the battlefield and sent to a hospital at Cassville in Barlow County, Ga. He remained there for three weeks before he was granted a 60 day furlough home to recover from his wound. The furlough was extended for another month. In January 1864 he rejoined his company in Dalton, Ga.
The battle of Jonesboro, Ga. took place on the last day of August, 1864. It was a hotly contested fight with the enemy firmly entrenched behind breastworks and the Confederates making a desperate but losing struggle. In the confusion and noise of the battle, Brittain failed to hear retreat sounded, and was left alone of the battlefield within 30 yards of the enemy's breastworks. He took refuge behind a large stump. After the shooting ceased he was able to escape capture, but was unable to find his unit. He fell in with General Gipson's brigade, a reserve unit which had not advanced as far as the 22nd. Three days after the battle he founded his unit and went with them to Nashville. There is a note in his record that he served as company cook at this time.
The battle of Nashville was fought in December 1864. The Confederate Army was forced to retreat and were kept on the march until they reached Tupelo, Miss. After a week there they (the 22nd) were orded to North Carolina. Brittain and Melton Harrison of the 50th Alabama regiment got leave of absence to visit their homes in Alabama while their companies were enroute to North Carolina. They spent several days home and then with Captain Monroe Anderson, General Wheeler's aide, proceeded to Spartanburg, Chester Court House and then Graham Station, N.C. They rejoined their unit there and Brittain presented a horse and mule to his colonel. He had secured them on his long march from Alabama,
From Graham Station the 22nd were sent to Greensboro. A week later on April 25, 1865, General Joe Johnston surrendered and the war was over for Brittain. Shortly afterwards he received his parole and started home. He walked the entire way, except the last three miles. He arrived home on May 21, 1865.
George A. Brittain retained his strength and vigor until his last days remarkable well for a man who had gone through two wars. He was a good soldier and a good citizen and left a posterity of which he would be proud.
