WILHELMINA, pronounced wihl hehl MEE nuh (1880-1962), became queen of the Netherlands in 1890 when her father, William III, died. Her mother, Queen Emma, ruled as regent until 1898. In 1901 Wilhelmina married Henry, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940, during World War II, and tried to capture Wilhelmina. But she escaped to London and directed the Netherlands forces against both Germany and Japan. After the war, her people joyfully welcomed Wilhelmina home. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee in August 1948 and then gave up her throne to her daughter, Juliana (see JULIANA). Wilhelmina was born at The Hague, the Netherlands.

General Notes (Wife)

Some strange folk tales about Maud de Saint Valery have su rvived. One story calls her Moll Walby and tell show she built the castle of Hay on Wye, single hande dinonenig ht. She carried the stones in her apron but one lodged itself in her slipper. She flicked it out over the river Wye three miles away, where it survived the centuries as an ine foottall standing stone with magical powers.

General Notes for Child Giles De Braose

Giles de Braose returned from exile in France with t h e a r c hbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton and othe r ch urch me n . They landed at Dover in 1213 and met the k ing a t Win che st er, where he received absolution. With h is mos t bitt er e nem ies back in the country, John soon f aced re newed u nrest.

Bishop Giles de Braose and his brother Reginald, jo i n e d b y prince Llywelyn, ravaged the king's march land s a n d w on b ack the lost de Braose castles in Wales. The ir s uc ces s serv ed to rally an army of rebel barons fro m th e nor ther n shire s and they joined together at North ampto n.

The revolt took on the character of a crusade and t h e a r m y named itself The Host of God and Holy Church. T h e reb e l s failed in their efforts to take Northampton b u t won B ed fo rd. The king avoided personal confrontatio n w ith th e reb e l army in the hope that its zeal would b ur n out. T o his d is may it then took London, receiving a n e nthusiast ic welco m e from the citizens, and demande d to m eet the ki ng to agr e e a charter of rights.

The army harassed the king until he finally met wit h i t s l e aders at Runnymede, outside Windsor in June 121 5. T h e Mag n a Carta stated that: "No free man shall be a rrest e d or im pr isoned or dispossessed or outlawed or ex ile d o r in any w a y brought to ruin, nor will we go or s en d agai nst him, un le ss by the lawful judgement of hi s pee rs or b y the law o f th e land".

In the fields of Runnymede the spectres of Maud and h e r s o n , who starved to death in a dungeon of the castl e n earb y , a nd the fall of William de Braose, must hav e conc entra te d ma ny minds. In the ranks of younger son s and le sser k nig hts w ho gathered at the negotiation o f Magna Ca rta wa s Wil liam a nd Maud's sixteen year old g randson, Jo hn, th e de Br aose he ir.

The barons demanded the return of the de Braose lan d s t o G i les, with the wardship of his nephew John. Th e ki ng' s off e r to restore the rightful succession fo r a fin e o f 9000 m ar ks was angrily rejected under the t erms o f th e new chart er . The issue became a battle of w ills be twee n the relucta n t king and the barons who wer e determi ned t o assert thei r p rinciples of justice. Gil es and Reg inal d continued to a sser t their claims in th e marches b y mili tary means.

Within four months John had been forced to concede Gi l e s ' c ase. But only days after meeting the king to conc lu d e t he s ettlement, Giles fell ill and died in Glouces te r . It i s dif ficult not to suspect foul play. The de B rao s e land s revert ed back to the crown.eland in 1210 an d ex pe lled th e de Lacy s for harbouring the de Braose fa mily.

William made a desperate return to Wales and recruite d L l y w elyn to his cause. They fought side by side unti l Jo h n re tu rned to crush the alliance. The last Welsh p rinc e s to su bmi t to John's humiliating peace terms wer e Owa i n and Rhy s o f Deheubarth, grandsons of William d e Brao s e through hi s da ughter Matilda's marriage to Gru ffyd d a p Rhys.

Maud and her family were beseiged at Meath but they ma n a g e d to escape and headed for Scotland. At Galloway D un c a n o f Carrick captured the fugitives and handed the m ov e r t o ki ng John. Maud tried again to buy back the k ing' s f avou r wit h 50,000 marks (which she didn't have) . Mean whil e, he r husb and arranged the safe keeping of t heir el des t grands on Joh n in Gower.

William de Braose narrowly escaped king John's purs u i t . H e dressed himself as a beggar and fled to Franc e v i a hi s ho me port of Shoreham. John's fury turned mur dero us . H e thre w Maud and her son William into Windso r castl e . Othe rs in t he terrorised family survived capt ivity b u t William , the he ir, and his mother starved t o deat h i n a Windsor d ungeon.

William de Braose fanned the flames of rebellion wh e n h e r e ached Paris by revealing the deadly secret whi c h ha d prom pt ed his promotion and his fall. He told ki n g Phili p how J oh n had murdered prince Arthur. The sto r y spread l ike wild fir e. John killed Arthur with his o w n hands durin g a drunk en r age and threw the body in t h e river Seine.

William died at Corbeil within a year, in 1211. Some ch r o n i clers report that he was killed in a duel. If thi s i s t ru e , it raises the possibility that he resorted t o th e to urn am ent and his skills in combat to earn a liv ing a nd pe rha p s a reprieve for his family. William ha d accumu late d mor e e nemies than most in his eventful ca reer. I t may b e tha t on e of them simply took advantag e of his v ulnerabi lity i n exi le.

Giles de Braose pledged to seek justice and reveng e f o r h i s ruined family, supported by his brother Regin ald . T he e xi led archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langt on , buri ed th ei r father in the abbey of Saint Victor i n Pa ris. Th e peop l e of Tetbury honoured him with a larg e mon ument.

A memory of the terrible fall of the de Braose family s u r v i ves in Bramber. The figures of two children have be e n s e e n in the village on Christmas eve running hand i n h an d al on g the main street, pale and thin, as thoug h flee in g fro m th e wrath of king John. William and Mau d had a s ma ny a s seven teen children. Most reached adul thood bu t ine vitab ly the f ates of some are unrecorded.

The king was quick to distribute the de Braose land s i n r e t urn for support in the barons' wars but he kep t Bra mbe r f o r himself. John enjoyed hunting at Knepp an d ther e ar e se ve ral royal letters addressed from Brambe r.

In 1212 King John prepared a massive army to crush Lly w e l y n once and for all. But the plan came to an abrup t ha l t . Th e king was shaken by rumours of a plot inspir ed i n F ra nce . His life would be threatened by betraya l durin g th e c omin g battle. In a stunning political so mersault , Joh n wr ong-f ooted his enemies by yielding t o the pop e at las t an d surre ndering England as a fief t o Rome.

Pope Innocent III was more than pleased to accept Joh n ' s s u bjection, along with large sums of money. The pa p a l inte rd ict and John's excommunication would be lifte d . N ow an a tta ck on John would be an affront to the po p e hims elf. Th e ex iled churchmen would return, includi n g bisho p Giles d e Brao se, to absolve his sins. In rea li ty, of c ourse, Joh n's chu rchmen loathed the deal an d the ir renewe d hatred se aled hi s reputation as England 's mos t wicked k ing.

John persistently denied the murder of prince Arth u r . H e c alculated that his new found papal protectio n wo ul d thw ar t the efforts of Philip of France to brin g hi m t o trial . B ut Margam abbey recorded an ugly stor y fo r pos terity i nform ed, perhaps, by their patron Will iam d e Brao se:

After king John had captured Arthur and kept him al i v e i n p rison for some time, at length in the castle o f R ou en a fte r dinner on the Thursday before Easter whe n h e wa s drun k an d possessed by the Devil, he slew hi m wit h hi s own han d, an d tying a heavy stone to the bod y cas t it i nto the Se ine . It was discovered by a fishe rman i n his n et, and bei ng d ragged to the bank and reco gnised , was tak en for secre t bur ial . . .

The old legend that John and his family were "the Dev i l ' s b rood", literally spawned by the Devil, had neve r se em e d s o true. Disenchanted clerics also told anothe r hor ro r s tory.

Maud de Braose and her son had been shut up in a dung e o n w i th only a bacon and some oat bread to sustain th e m . Aft e r eleven days the prison cell was opened and b o t h were fo un d dead. William sat upright on a chair, h i s f ace turne d t o the wall. The body of his mother emb ra ce d her child . Sh e seemed to have died kissing his ch eek s b ut closer in spect ion revealed that they had bee n chew ed a way.

John recognised that the de Braose stories were har m f u l t o his cause. He published his own version of Wil li a m d e Br aose's fall, to discredit the family for thei r r eb elli on . He had given them every chance to settl e wit h hi m fo r Mu nster and Limerick but their promise s of pay men t wer e neve r honoured. Therefore, "accordin g to th e la w and cu stom o f England", William de Braos e was outl awed.

+++++++++++ John's statement about the seizure of De Br a o s e 's estates is as follows (from Rymer, f. 143, A.D . 12 1 2 , 1 4 John):

John, by the grace of God, King of England, &c. T o a l l w h o shall read this document, health.

That it may be known to you all why and for what Will i a m B r aose, having forfeited his property, hath retire d f ro m o u r dominions, be it understood that the same Wi llia m o we d t o us, at our last return from Normandy, fiv e tho usan d m arc s for our land of Munster in Ireland whi ch w e had l ease d t o him, nor had he for five years pai d us a ny of it s pro ceed s; and when he had fixed many ti mes fo r payment , he ke pt t o none, and owed to us the re nt of o ur city o f Limeric k fo r five years then passed , and ha d paid us no thing bu t one h undred pounds afte r five year s - by the la w of ou r Excheque r it was deter mined that h is chattels i n Englan d should b e distraine d for the paym ent of our deb t, but h e so remove d them , that none coul d be found; an d we comman ded our ward e n for the parts o f Wales to distr ain his chat tels in Wal e s for the same d ebt; and then the re came to u s at Glou ceste r, Matilda o f Hay his wife, an d William Ear l of Fe rrers, hi s nephew , and Adam de Porter , who had marr ie d his sister, a nd th ey besought us that t he aforesaid m i ght come to us t o sp eak with us, and to ma ke satisfact io n to us for his deb t s; and this their reque st we gran ted , and at Hereford t h e aforesaid William cam e to us , and ga ve up to us thre e o f his castles in Wale s - Hay , Brecknock , and Radno r - to b e held for the payme nt o f his debts t o us, and t o make sati sfaction to us fo r h is transgression , withi n the time whic h at his reque s t we had fixed; and m oreov er he gave up in p ledge to u s t he whole of his land i n E ngland and Wales, unl ess h e kep t to the terms.

And in this manner we received them, and he delive r e d u p t o us as hostages two sons of William de Braose , j un ior , an d one son of Reginald de Braose, and four s on s o f hi s retai ners, but neither on this account did h e c ar e to ob serve th e terms of the agreement; but afte r a s hor t time , when Gera rd of Athi, to whom we had com mitte d tho se fort resses, ha d commanded their constable s to co me t o receiv e their pay , which was usually disbu rsed t o the m from mont h to month , the aforesaid William , heari ng tha t these offi cers were a bsent, himself, tog ether wi th hi s two sons, Wil liam junio r and Reginald, c ollecte d togeth er a large numbe r of people , and attacke d and la id sieg e to the three afor esaid castle s all i n one day ; but whe n they could not succ eed in thei r att ack, the y turned the ir course to the tow n of Leominst e r (it i s a cell of th e Abbey of Reading, an d supporte d by o ur f ree bounty), an d burned half the town , and o f our cross - bearers and serv ants, found there, an d othe rs of our peop l e, they kille d some and wounded other s.

Gerard of Athi hearing of this, assembled of our pe o p l e a s many as he could, to succour those parts whic h th e y h ad a ttacked. Whereupon William, with his afores aid s on s, a nd hi s wife, and their families, fled into I reland , a nd th ere h e was received by William the Earl M arshall , an d Walt er an d Hugh de Lacy, who communicate d to us th at th ey ha d undert aken for the same William , that he sho uld co me t o us withi n a certain period (wh ich in their l etter s the y named), t o make satisfactio n for his aforesa id exc esses , and this wa s granted, bu t neither did he ob serve h is ow n terms; we the refore as sembled an army to g o into I reland , and whilst w e wer e making preparations f or our ma rch, th e same Willia m c ame to our judges of Ire land, an d sought o f them a safe - conduct, that he might c ome to u s to sue fo r our pardo n an d forgiveness, and the y assente d to his req uest, an d took a n oath of him tha t he would c ome to us str aight way; but whe n he had com e to the marche s of Herefor d h e paid no respec t to us, b ut drew to him a s many of o u r enemies as he could , and b egan to seek to d o us al l th e mischief in his power , fo r he offered to u s 4,00 0 marc s for peace and our favou r , for all his afore sai d debts an d castles, and lands i n Eng land and Wales, a n d we commande d him to come with u s into I reland with o u r safe-conduct , together with hi s wife, to sp eak conce rni ng the fine whi ch he offered, a nd to confirm th ere t he te rms of the agree ment, which sh ould then be made b e tween u s; this he refuse d to do, an d continued in Wales , a nd aft er that we had pas sed ove r into Ireland he di d us wha t mi schief he could, an d bur ned a mill and thre e small hous es.

In the mean time Matilda de Haya fled towards Scotlan d , w i t h William and Reginald; and afterwards Duncan d e Ka rig e s en t word to us that he had taken Matilda an d her d augh ter , th e wife of the son of Roger de Mortime r, and t he af ores aid W illiam, junior, and his wife an d their tw o sons , wh o when t hey were brought to us, Mat ilda hersel f offer ed u s 40,000 m arcs for the life and l imbs of he r husband , hers elf, and th eir people, and tha t he shoul d give to u s quie t possessio n of all his cast les and lan ds, and thi s was ag reed upon. T hree days aft erwards, how ever, she re pented o f this determi nation, a nd said tha t she could no t abide b y it.

Being about to return into England, we carried he r a n d h e r family with us as prisoners, and she again of fer e d us 4 0, 000 marcs, and likewise 10,000 for having g on e fr om he r fir st agreement, and we assented to this o n c ondit ion th at a s often as she might go from her enga geme nt, 10 ,000 ma rcs s hould be added to the fine, to b e pai d on he r first p ayment ; and this agreement betwee n us, h erself , and her fa mily, w as written and confirme d by th e oath a nd seals of o ur baron s who were present , and th e period s for the paymen ts were f ixed.

When Matilda and her family were at Bristol, she requ e s t e d that we would give permission to her husband to c o m e a n d speak with her privately, and we allowed it. Af te rw ard s t he same William came himself to us, and agree d t o t he t erm s which his wife had made with us and prom ise d sep arate ly t hat he was willing to pay; and when i t wa s neces sary f or hi m to procure the money, we, at hi s req uest, se nt wit h him , a servant of Geoffrey, the so n of P eter, ou r justic iary , to conduct him safely, les t he sho uld anywh ere mee t wit h obstruction, seeing tha t he had b een so oft en denou nced t o the several authori ties as a w rong doer ; and whe n the da y for the first pa yment drew n ear, he hi mself secr etly mad e his escape fr om our domini ons; and pa id to us n o part o f the aforesa id money.

And when the day for the first payment had absolutel y c o m e , we sent to Matilda to know what she intended do ing , a n d s he answered explicitly that she could pay not hin g t o us , an d that she had no more money for this pur pos e tha n 2 4 marc s of silver and 24 Bysantines, and 1 5 ounc es o f gold , and n either herself nor her husband h ath fro m tha t tim e paid any thing to us.

When therefore we had heard that William had thus with d r a w n from our dominions, and that he had paid none o f t h e mo ne y due, we gave command that our kingdom shoul d b e s earch ed , and a proclamation made in the differen t cou ntie s; an d wh en he did not appear, then, accordin g to th e la w and c usto m of England, he was outlawed.

That, therefore, you may be fully assured of the tr u t h o f ' this, we and the undersigned earls have affixe d o u r sea l s to this document in testimony of its truth.

++++++ Maud de Braose had clearly maddened the kin g b u t t h e true cause of his fury and her ultimate fat e rece iv e d n o mention. The testimony was witnessed b y severa l ba ro ns , half of whom would later appear as le aders o f the r ebe lli on against John in 1215.
