Died in Spartanburg, S. C., Joel Dean, in his 87th year. He was a Revolutionary soldier and was often heard to remark that he had received more blessings from freedom than all he had done or could do was worth; therefore he did not want any pension. He raised a large family. He was a splendid marksman and good hunter, and retained his eyesight until his death.
1. Emigrated from VA to Guilford county, NC in 1766 and, from there to South
Carolina in 1783 settling on the Enoree River in the territory afterwards
embraced in Spartanburg county. He was a progressive farmer for his day
and time and a highly respected citizen. 2. Copied from page 267 of the Brockman Scrapbook:
"From the 'Courier' of Charleston, SC

John Belton Brockman, Senior, is descended, on his maternal line, from Joel Dean, a Revolutionary soldier. On the plantation on which John Belton Brockman, Sr., now lives is an old family cemetery, enclosed with a rock wall built by the slaves, and in which are buried the above Joel Dean and his wife, Mary Brockman Dean, their son, Alford Dean and wife, Jane Bobo Dean, and Frances Caroline Hoy Dean, grandmother of John Belton Brockman. It is believed also that Ursula Marchbanks Dean, mother of Joel Dean, the Revolutionary soldier, is also buried in the old cemetery, as she died at age 98 at the home of her son Joel Dean. Born at a period when every faculty of the mind was called into action, he early acquired habits of decision and self-reliance beyound his years. While his father, under General Rutherford, was striking for liberty, or engaged in repelling the attacks of hostile Indians he was left at home, the only protector of a numerous family, of which he was the eldest.While still very young, his parents emigrated to this district, where they lived and died, and where early in life he was united in marriage to Mary Farrow, eldest daughter of the Revolutionary Patriot, Capt. Thomas Farrow. Nearly fifty years have elapsed since they were both "buried with Christ in Baptism," and more than twenty years since the beloved partner of his youth preceded him to a better state of existence, but the religion which he then professed failed not to be his support in the trials of a long life, and be rod and staff through the dark Valley of the Chamber of death. An upright man, "just in his dealings," he brought no reproach upon the name of Christ by an unhallowed grasping after wealth, and though he has left no overgrown fortune to his many children and their descendants he has left a nobler inheritance, a name without fear and without reproach.Of his eleven sons and daughters who reached maturity nine survive him, and those who are absent, as well as to his brothers and sisters indistant States, it will be a consolation to know that he retained his faculties unimpaired, and that almost the last act of expiring consciousness was to breathe a prayer so full of imagery, exalted faith and devine resignation as to appear to those who heard it almost the language of inspiration. No struggle marked the close of a life that had been passed with Christian diginity and consistency, but calmly as an infant slumbers, he fell asleep in Jesus. The funeral discourse was preached by the Rev. J.G. Landrum from the 92 Psalm: "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree," and on the 19th his mortal remains were laid by her who had gone before. Though the day was intensely cold, the number who attended his last resting place will best attest the estimation in which he was held by those among whom he lived and died and those who mourn such a father while they must bow in submission to the eternal decree, it remains to them to cherish, imitate, and to follow his example."
