Positive proof of the family being lineal descendants of John Brockman of Essex, England, is still lacking. Documentary evidence of the family in America starts with Henry Brockman of Maryland and Samuel Brockman who lived in Drysdale Parish, King and Queen County, Virginia, in 1731, and Samuel and William Brockman, who witnessed the will of Edward Pigg in St. Goorge's Parish, Spotsylvania, in 1739. A land grant was issued by Governor Gooch, dated August 5, 1731, for 22 shillings, William Mays acquired from the Commonwealth a grant for, 500 acres lying in Drysdale Parish, on both sides of Port Tobago Road. Of this amount, 100 acres was a gift from Daniel Coleman, 150 acres was acquired from Henry Shackleford, from James Ambrose, and 250 acres from surplus land of the state. Description shows that it adjoined Samuel Brockman, Richard Milliner, Craddocks, Rose, Ryan and Halls. Thomas Madison had 300 acres next to Rev. John Mays, minister, which may have been acquired by Samuel Brockman, who traded his 300 acres in King and Queen to John Henderson for 300 acres in Spotsylvania, plus 1,200 pounds of tobacco as a premium. Thomas Salmon of St. Marie's County patented land in St. George Parish in 1727.
Samuel Brockman who lived in King & Queen, Spotsylvania and Orange, left a will at Orange, probated 1766. His wife is known onlv as Mary, but there are indications that she was Mary Madison, (or Mary Mason) daughter of John Madison, Jr. and sister of Ambrose Madison (wife Frances Taylor). His children by his will. (1) Samuel, wife Rebecca. I have thought that possibly she was Rebecca Salmon, and that perhaps she was confused with the wife of Henry; also, there are indications that this Rebecker, wife of Samuel, was daughter of John Graves. (2) William must have been born by 1718, as he witnessed a deed In 1739. His wife was Betty. William left a will at Albemarle giving the names of his children. John Brockman, third son presumed to have married Mary Collins, daughter of Joseph; Elizabeth, married Anthony Street; Sarah, married John Henderson, Rachael, married John Rogers and she was a widow by 1776 when her mother died; another daughter deceased at the time her father wrote his will, 1762, married a Haley and John Haley was legatee when the estate of Samuel's wife was closed in 1776. A James Haley and wife Susannah deed land to Samuel I in 1746, and Samuel Brockman II in 1749, but this is not proof of the parents of John Haley as Henry Chiles also had a daughter Susannah who married a Haley, and there was a Susannah Haley who witnessed a will of John Haley in Louisa in 1760.
Mary Collins, wife of John Brockman, was daughter of Capt. Joseph Collins, whose father was John Collins. John Collins married a daughter of Mrs. Amy Wyatt of Lower Norfolk County. I have always felt that Amy Brockman, wife of Thomas, was a Gatewood or a Wyatt. Many of the Collins family named their children Wyatt as a Christian name, so that it appears that John Collins married Mary Wyatt, and was father of Joseph and others.
Samuel Brockman of King and Queen County, VA was probably the son of Henry Brockman of Barbados, Maryland and Virginia and wife Rebecca Salmon. He was living on Port Tobago Road, Drysdale Parish, King and Queen County in 1731. In 1732 he bought land in Spotsylvania (later Orange), where he moved and built a home naming it the "White House". His will, dated Nov 3, 1762, was probated Sept. 25, 1766. Final deposition of his estate was made January 15, 1776, when his widow died. His daughter Mary signed her name Mary M., so we assume her mother's maiden name began with M. "The Brockman Scrapbook" by William Everett Brockman c1952. Change Date: 13 SEP 2000 at 00:24:45

IN THE WM. E. BROCKMAN BOOKS SAMUEL BROCKMAN JR WAS REFERRED TO AS SAMUEL (II).
1. Samuel II inherited land in Albemarle county, VA that was left to him by
his father, Samuel I. This land was in the NW part of Albemarle. He later
transferred part of this land in 1769 (350 acres) to his brother, William
(p. 9, Scrapbook). 1a. The will of Samuel Lindsay Brockman (Brockman Scrapbook, pages 146-147)
proves that Samuel II Brockman's house in Orange county, VA was "The White
House." 2. A question exists about Samuel II's marriages; It is strongly suspected
that his first wife was Mary Woolfolk a daughter of Richard Woolfolk (OCVF
II:124). Mary supposedly died after the birth of her first daughter, Mary.
Samuel's second wife may have been Rebecker or Rebecca Ellis, a daughter
of John and Rebecca (Moorman) Ellis or Orange county, VA. John and Rebecca
married about 1725. His second wife may also have been Rebecca Graves, a
daughter of John and Susanna (Dicken) Graves. See pages 133-134 and 154-156
in the Brockman Scrapbook for more information about this family. 2a. The will of Samuel Lindsay Brockman (Brockman Scrapbook, pages 146-147)
"supports the contention" that Samuel II Brockman's wife was a Graves. 3. Samuel II was described as having been a cooper by trade. 4. His home in Orange county, VA has been described as being near Monrovia in
St. Thomas parish. This location was on 300 acres of land which his father
had obtained in 1732 from John Henderson (Scrapbook, p. 150). 5. The KY Gazette 11(618), 25 Jul 1798....A list of lands in Washington county
to be sold to satisfy back taxes due: Samuel Brockman's administrators,
Samuel Brockman, Jr.
---Samuel II's Kentucky land was sold 12 May 1796--land on Licking Creek.
This land was acquired by a Treasury Warrant 3309 and was 500 acres,
originally described as being in Fayette county, later as Mason county.
This Kentucky land was adjacent to Samuel I's Kentucky land of 1,000
acres. (Scrapbook, p. 190).
---Description of the land....Surveyed August 27, 1785, for Samuel
Brockman, Junior, 500 acres of land by virtue of one Treasury Warrant, No.
3309, entered July 3, 1780, in the County of Fayette on main Licking Creek
joining Samuel Brockman Senior. Entry of 1000 acres, being part of an
entry of 1500 acres.

Theo. Marshall, P.M. 6. I do not know if this is for Samuel II, but there is mention of a Samuel
Brookman of Orange county, VA who was appointed Lieutenant in the VA
Militia in the Rev. War. On page 151, Brockman Scrapbook, we find:
"Samuel II was too old for active service in the Revolutionar War. He
rendered civil service. He may have held [a] commision in the militia
guarding Brook's Bridge. He and nephew Joseph signd the Orange County
Petitions, Oct. 20, 1779. Being a large producer he sold supplies but
also rendered voluntary service and had at least one horse impressed for
military use. The Minute Book, Page 77, Feb. 27, 1776, shows Samuel
serving on the jury and Page 61 has [a] recommendation for appointment
of a Samuel as Lieutenant of Militia. There are records of both Samuel,
Sr. and Samuel furnishing supplies. Rebecca, wife of Samuel died in
Orange." 7. Samuel (II) died intestate. He may have left a will but it was never
entered into probate. (OCVF II: 92)

of land in Gallatin co., KY "for natural affection and $1.00." This 37
acre plot had been purchased in 1803 by Samuel B. Brockman.

large planter and slave owner. He settled on the Enoree River between
Greenville and Woodruff, SC. 2. For many years he was a militia officer and commanded the lower regiment of
Greenville District, SC. 3. He was a member of the SC Conventions of 1832 and 1852 and, for a long time
he was a member of the SC House of Representatives and Senate. 4. He was a deacon of the Baptist Church. 5. Had 11 children:
